Are there official rules as to how many asteroid templates are allowed?

3 from each player in a 100 point match.

Chosen from the ones in either core set, the YT2400, and the Decimator.

IIRC also each player can take only one copy of each token. No dupes unless your opponent brings the same one.

That's one dense asteroid field.

Note, those rules are for a "standard, tournament style" game. When playing with your friends you are free to use as many or as few obstacles as you want and your opponent agrees to.
