Need Storage Option Help: Pilot Cards, ID Tokens, Dials, and Huge Ships

By DirbYh, in X-Wing

The miniatures themselves I've mostly got hammered out. It's the other odds and ends...and huge ships, that need addressing.

1. Huge Ships: Foam is the obvious answer. Plan on having to cut it myself, but are there any pre-cut products I should be aware of? I'm specifically looking for being able to store each faction in one set of foam. For example, the Tantive IV and GR-75 in the same foam block.

2. Cards and Tokens: I need a quick and easy access solution. What I actually want is to be able to store pilot cards with their matching ID tokens together, so I'm not rummaging around for an hour while my opponent is already set up.

3. Maneuver Dials: To be honest, I was thinking of just buying some double-stuffed Oreos and using the plastic cookie holder.

Flambeau makes a parts box that's ideal for the pilot tokens and dials. Extra dividers are available so it's easy to store dials ship tokens together. Draw up a legend and tape it to the inside of the lid and you'll always know what is where.

Battlefoam offers trays in various sizes (for their bags, boxes and other companies bags) with cut outs for huge ships. They also have a custom tray creator that includes shapes for the huge ships so you can design your own. For example, they offer a tray designed to fit the raider and a gozanti, but I used the creator to design one to fit two gozantis instead.

Cards and tokens go in boxes like this http://www.hobbycraft.co.uk/plastic-organiser-box/563073-1000#product_description-tabor similar.

Look for sewing boxes and the like.

(I had to get a little creative with a craft knife and a chisel to fit in the big-ship tokens and the big rocks and bombs, but I enjoy that kind of thing).

They also double nicely as tournament trays. Just make sure you get one long enough for the range ruler.

battle foam for dials/ships... and binders for cards. plastic plano bins for chits. or go to hobby lobby for plastic bins.. I configured my Battlefoam bag to hold the plastic bin my chits/range rulers are in. recently while in walmart I found a "drawer trey" that makes a nearly perfect tournament trey for 3 bucks!!

I find foam way too expensive. I've found that there are some deep Plano trays that can hold epic ships. I've got my CR-90, Raider, and Gozanti in two cases. I could fit the GR-75 in, too, if I had it. They are $10 a tray. The only problem is that there is no box to fit them in.

I also hate the binders for cards. I've done that for Magic and it's a pain to add in new sets. Too annoying. I'm using the card board boxes you got for winning events before, but even my 3 of them are getting full. I'm not sure what I'll do soon.

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions!

i use a tacklebox for all my tokens and small/large ships. Works great, though now that ive started buying nonimperials its getting crowded in the bottom lol.

Cards i just use a typical 3ring binder. You can find sleeves for the upgrade cards, theyre 4by4 instead of 3by3.

Huge Ships....probably better off handcarrying them. I have the same issue with not just my huge ships but also my two Gargantuan Creatures in 40k - theyre too big to box lol so i just carry them the few times i use'm.

Huge ships stay in the plastic vacuum formed things they come in.

Cards go in side loading 3x3 ultra pro 20 page binders.

Ship tokens are alphabetized and put in a Plano tacklebox, which then sits in the top portion of a Plano 1374, peace be upon him.

Maneuver dials are also alphabetized and put into a Plano tacklebox. I only store dial bottoms with me as I've switched to upgraded plastic dials.

Plano 1374's can fit 6 tackleboxes in them, the top of them can fit 2 in addition to the 4 trays.

i couldnt even get my huge ships OUT of the vacuum plastic without busting the plastic a bit lol.

What Plano cases are you using? I'm looking to upgrade to Plano trays and boxes.

if binders for cards is too annoying for you due to new cards n such, do what my brother did for his magic cards.

He had a cardboard box about the width/depth of the cards (not that hard to custom cut that out of a normal box) and had all of his similar cards together/separated by a cardboad spacer.

Keep all your EPTs in one spot, cardboard spacer, all your Mods, cardboard spacer, etc etc. Long as you put something at the end to fill out the empty space, they sit in there pretty solidly too.

For the record he did this for ...... pfft i wanna say well over 2000 cards. Worked wonders for him and didnt cost a dime.

Binder with sheets for cards is he best way to go. To each their own, but I really don't get how adding cards is inconvenient. Just add a page to your binder if your pilots page is full (or modification page etc).

Seeing everything you have laid out is very convenient.

Ships: Tackle box -> going to get battlefoam after destroying a decimator cannon. It was my fault for biking with it in my backpack.

Cards: I bought regular and upgrade card sleeves for a binder.

Dials:I keep all mine in a long tube that came from a replacement office piston cylinder. I probably will upgrade to coin sheet protectors for a binder as someone once mentioned.

Yeah, i just keep types of cards on different pages. Only upgrades i have on the same page is things there isnt many cards of anyway (titles and sensor upgrades, or whatever the special cards are called in TFO packs). Sleeves are dirt cheap anyway.

Also i keep my large ships on the same page since afaik the Falcon is the first large ship to get extra pilots.

I use the plastic that they come in. I put them into a file box. When people ask why I use the plastic they come in, I take one and toss it on the floor to show how well protected they are.
