Tournament season is over(for me).what now?

By Velvetelvis, in X-Wing

Wrapped up a particularly depressing first try at competitive play this year.

It finished with a smoking ruin of a regionals attempt. My flaming list slowly sinking in a pool of my own salty tears.

So...enough of that....on to other things.

I like this game.I'm just struggling with all the same factors everyone else is.

So, step 1- mop up the tears and take a rest.

Step 2- remember the mistakes that were made...learn from them.. Etc...etc.

Step 3- strong drink

Step 4-well....here's where I am currently. I'm hanging up the list and its time to reinvent something more effective... Less.. Specialised.

I took a gamble that with the new rock in town (jumps, ghosts, etc)

That the regionals would be if not full of paper...at least maybe half would be paper.(aces, palp aces)

Anyways...I went with scissors (RAC,whisper)

And low and behold...the room seemed just absolutely overstuffed with 'rock'.

All my pairings accept one were just super hard for my build.

Yadda yadda yadda... I'm ready to stretch my wings and try things that are new to me. Swarmy stuff looks interesting. Maybe practice aces some more myself. Try other factions.

Who knows.

Not sure what the point is other than....there's a lot more like me that are wrapping up a shyte weekend but don't despair. Let's get some rest and come back better next time.

The event location and staff was phenomenal, everyone I played with was great.

That's that then.

Good news: the next regional season is in the winter!

Make your own tournament with blackjack and strippers...in fact forget the blackjack!

I vote that u-boats be considered paper in rock/paper/scissors/Bossk/Yoda .... toilet paper.

Start hearing about the Poe/Falcon cards...

How about you quit playing 100 pt tournament death match with the same 5 lists you see and try some non-tournament games? There are a ton of things you could do. The FFG missions go up to 17 or so. Mission 1 has a lot of nuance to it. There is Dagobah Dave's Trench Run mission that is a blast. How about playing with B lists? Lists that aren't Regionals worthy, but still fun? Epic games with those ships no one uses are really fun, especially the campaigns that come with them. There is even just playing 100 pts of generics vs 100 pts of generics. Or....how about 150 pt matches? Have you tried Heroes of the Aturi Cluster campaign? It's a blast.

Need to do something?

VASSAL!

Need to do someone else?

VASSAL!

Need to do an unrelated third thing?

Uh....not Vassal.

The only regional I could attend was last weekend, so I have moved on to some fun lists for a while. Tomorrow I am trying out a Sabine, Poe, Hawk build that I saw run at a Regionals. I haven't put my attack shuttle on the table yet, so I figured it was time. I will play around with lists like this until I start planning for World's, assuming that I can get signed up.

Vassal....you know...could be a good time to work on figuring that out.

Good news: the next regional season is in the winter!

And the new rules about draws will be in effect so I won't skip this time! I hope there's another in MI this coming season.

Where are you from that milwaukee was your closest regional? I can recommend a couple places to play in the area with some great groupa.

Play fun X-wing that has nothing whatsoever to do with all those boring 100 pt dogfights.

Prepare for all the cool SPRING-KIT tournaments coming soon!;)

I've got a backlog of about a dozen bad squads that I want to try out. My regional is in early June so I'm trying to ignore the sh*tty lists and stay focused on competition, but after that I'll be mostly playing Jank City.

Episode 3 for our podcast starts the "B-list" segment where we talk about fun lists that you won't see in regionals. It's got an intro segment that gets stuck in my head for days at a time. Every time I see someone post like this it starts over again! It should be out tomorrow.

at a local store they are running a league ad part of the league rules are that you have to play 2 different lists , generally most people use 2 factions for it.

since I started the game in December I've been only playing imperials, but during the league I've branched out and tried other factions and some really off the wall builds. This has been part of a huge learning curve because once you start flying these other ships you start to really appreciate all the decisions that they need and will help you fly against them.

No matter how far I go I will always be coming back to a phantom I just love the ship to much for that but in the mean time try flying odd lists and other factions and it will definitely help you for the next set of matches

How about doing what most of us do and just play for fun??? yeah you might not get that oh so coveted 2016 plastic range ruler! that you have to spend like 15 to 20 bucks for a "Chance" to win . lol or that 7th copy of "recon specialist" " or "3P0" lol Oh or another dice bag...lol

Yes Vassal is cure.

Go find a girl. Marry her.

And then what to do with her when the next season starts?

This game has gone through an interesting ride in its almost 4 years of official release, especially with regards to tournament metas.

If you really want something different to experience, give this a go;

http://dockingbay416.com/campaign/

You'll have to do some work to get the components printed out, but if you're feeling like you hit the wall in the OP scene, this is some solid unofficial content. Play it solo or with some friends.

Then sit back and wonder why FFG never made an official version of this.

Then get back into the next Regional season when it hits and see if the game changed to your liking.

Oddly enough, I decided around the time you originally posted this topic that I would not go to a Regional this season after all. The cost and time commitment were factors, but the lackluster (to me at least) participation prize (which is all I'm likely to achieve) was the deciding factor.

I enjoy building lists and playing in league nights, but I'll save my time and money for an alt art card in which I'm actually interested.
