Let's talk about Corran.

By banjobenito, in X-Wing

He used to be on top of the world. Felt like a king, everyone wanted to be his buddy - Poe, Dash, even the Walking Carpet.

But now look at him... Picking through dustbins for food, selling Whistler for a bag of crack(shot), man, these are dark times for Horn.

But what's this? Corran's been graced with the tournament alt card treatment* for this coming summer season - could he be about to make a competitive comeback too?

To be honest with you, I'm not sure why he's fallen out of favour so badly. Sure, that first wave of tlt spam was pretty bad news for him, and really exposed his lack of ATs as a weakness, but they've been pegged back now by the new meta-beasts, the Wolfpack and Palp's Aces.

But geared right and in the right team, shouldn't Corran still be able to mix it with them? He was always a scary prospect when flying imperial aces, and that hasn't changed. The Jumpmaster is a serious proposition, especially with its too-common loadout of plasma torps, but the guy can close range and arc dodge with the best of them.

So I'm interested to hear from people on the forums who're sticking by Corran - I'm guessing Tastetherainbow is one for sure. Has anyone taken him out for a tournament recently? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts, and builds, of how he can be made to work in the new meta.

* And does anyone else think he looks eerily like the Alt Dash card? Man, they really are brothers for life...

I thought we were gonna discuss his ginger nut addiction, i made a banner and everything.

Just you leave Mara Jade out of this, Hobo!

Good riddance to him. R2D2 made him near OP against many lists. Should never have been allowed to be put on a ship that has 3 agility, evade action, and can arc dodge.

I love the new alt art. But my hatred of Corran as an opponent makes me want to run Major Rhymer or Lt Blount with Advanced Homing Missiles.

Oh I know that Corran ennui too! That slow creeping sense of doom as he whittles you down while regenerating shields. But the guys got a bit of class to him, and there are loads of viable builds, unlike stapled-on Soontir.

But for all that I think he's somewhat balanced. Top shelf Horn will cost you almost 50% of your list afterall. He represents the best of the best for rebels, so I want to see him healthy in the game, in the same way that Whisper represents the best of the imperials. If a ship like that aint working then the faction has a problem.

I've had Corran run away and regen to full health so many times and then lost to time. He's a force of pure evil.

Love him - staple of my list. Even at 48 points, I don't find him a waste. PS8 is a pain (at least in my local meta), but anything higher and he'd be too overpowered.

So what you running him with, Penguin, given the U-boat/Palp danger?

I'm trying out this set up of him to use at a tournie in a few weeks

50 Corran Horn + Veteran Instincts + Fire-Control System + Proton Torpedoes + R2-D2 + Engine Upgrade

i normally use Etahn in my lists as my go to E wing however ive ran him through the benchmark program and he does surprisingly well no doubt when i come up against real opponents it'll become a lot more interesting

He is screwed in the current meta. In a top level tournament, you can't take the risk that you'll see a Palp/Wampa and lose 50% of your list in two turns. Add on top of that his general futility against uboats (like almost all rebel aces at the moment) and he just adds no value.

Sad, but true

The answer is: WAMPA took all his crack(shot)

Seriously, imo Wampa could be one of the main reasons you don't see him in the Cuts that often

Corran is still great, but he cannot handle the brunt of TLTs and Jumpmasters alone. I have been having good success using him with R4D6 IA Biggs. I use Draw their Fire as Corran's EPT with hull upgrade, R2D2, and FCS. Leaves you 29 points to play with. I was using Garven Dreis for a while because Corran with two attacks that can be focus and TL is terrifying (its the Vader/Gunner on a decimator idea where you know you can't survive with Garven but he can help deal damage quickly before going down). I have currently slotted Ezra in the attack shuttle with Elusiveness, ABT, and Chewbacca crew who is much more tanky than Garven ever was, and helps me against Fel because of the ABT. Ezra can do good work by himself if Corran ends up going down quickly. Them all in formation, have Corran eat crits off Biggs to keep him alive to soak torps with R4D6, and then regen with greens on Corran. Give it a shot. Corran isn't dead. He's just hiding behind Biggs to get to the endgame where he can shine.

What 48 point build do you use?

Corran can still compete, but his old lists from World's 2015 don't work so well anymore.

Biggs can let fcs Corran work.

I've had great results running 49-point Corran with chopper.

You just need a big punching bag they can't ignore.

Palp-heavy meta:

Chopper Corran (99)

Corran Horn (49) - E-Wing

Push The Limit (3), R2-D2 (4), Advanced Sensors (3), Engine Upgrade (4)

"Chopper" (50) - VCX-100

Fire Control System (2), Autoblaster Turret (2), Tactician (2), Gunner (5), Ion Projector (2)

Less palp?

Chopper/Corran Mk II (100)

"Chopper" (51) - VCX-100

Fire Control System (2), Twin Laser Turret (6), Hera Syndulla (1), Ezra Bridger (3), Ion Projector (2)

Corran Horn (49) - E-Wing

Push The Limit (3), R2-D2 (4), Advanced Sensors (3), Engine Upgrade (4)

I still use Corran sometimes.

Got to live up to my name :P

So what you running him with, Penguin, given the U-boat/Palp danger?

I'm running him with Poe and an A-Wing - See Nathan Eid's list from worlds. I'm also experimenting with miranda and a Bandit.

I must confess, I've only run into one Trip-Jumps since their release and handled that (but I don't think it was too well flown). The A-wing makes a good blocker and Corran can fling himself into range 1 of one of them and double tap and hopefully take it out. 3 greens with an evade and a focus is usually enough to tank at least one torpedo if need be.

Palp Aces suck. He's in a 100 point list, so usually moves after because PS8 and initiative. Having a PS10 Poe helps, but if Corran can get himself in Arc, a double tap can clear an Ace. The other advantage he has is that if you kill one, one Ace simply doesn't have the fire power to kill Corran. Even a Range one Soontir will be lucky to put through more than 1 damage (3 at a maximum) and Corran regens it all. Sure, Corran never catches the Ace, but if you get everything else, you win as Corran is a 48 point rock.

What 48 point build do you use?

PTL, FCS, EU, R2-D2.

[[

I've gotta ask, Taste, don't you miss the fire control? The double tap doesn't have the same pizazz without it!

Really like the MKII list - Also, have you tested a stripped down lothal/corran, with a prototype in with them?

I'm super curious as to why Wampa scares off Corran, yet the Inquisitor is getting super popular. He also only has 2 hull.

Wampa is easily the most overrated part of imperial Aceholes. It's a freaking tie fighter, that has one trick. And guess what? If you shoot it more than twice, the other guy will use palp to save wampa, nullifying the guarantee.

The other option is to smoke the shuttle. Hello? It's got 1 evade. Again, if it tries to palp itself, he's not using it on wampa.

I beat palp/wampa/inquisitor/OL with 4 z-95's and a y-wing at the Atlanta regional in the final round of Swiss. It has 2 glaring weaknesses and only 1 good attacker.

Come on main. You have so many tools. Learn to use them

Love him in the novels, severly dislike him in the game (he should have been in an Xwing too,, hopefully that happens one day), and really do not like the Alt art card at first glance.

Anyone tried running Horn with hull upgrade recently? I know EU is amazing on him, but if you are all right and he's really running scared from that little old tie fighter, hull should put an end to that. If you let Wampa take three shots at Corran, and you exert no pressure, so Palp can auto-crit with them, then you kind of lost that game anyway.

Hull is still a solid upgrade against the other 90% of lists too. But it ain't no EU.

45pts fits quite nicely into a few lists too...

Corran Horn (45) E-Wing (35), R2-D2 (4), Fire-Control System (2), Veteran Instincts (1), Hull Upgrade (3)

Prototype Pilot (15) A-Wing (17), Chardaan Refit (-2)

Lothal Rebel (40) VCX-100 (35), Fire-Control System (2), Han Solo (2), Hera Syndulla (1)
