Crazy idea...

By Chucknuckle, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

...but could you run Imperial Assault with more traditional wargames terrain? Could you swap out 'spaces' for 'inches' and run it on a traditional wargame table with normal terrain instead of using card tiles and square spaces?

For casual play, obviously. I have no interest in tournaments.

You could, but would need to rework the entire line of sight system and probably account for screening and cover for the dense terrain to make any sense.

You'd probably want to scale the range/accuracy numbers up. It works on the small board with the abstract scale of a grid, but an average blaster shot having a range of 3-4" and the bolt getting outpaced by a running trooper would probably feel slightly out of place on a scale terrain board.

If you enjoy the challange of balancing all that up, go for it.

There was a thread a few months ago where someone did just that. I believe they multiplied movement and ranges to get inches because they were using a full 6x4 40k board. He said it worked well, but that movement buffs like jet pack and boba fett were a but overpowered.

I thought I had saved the thread, but it can't find it now.

Brilliant, thanks!

God I need to do this again. It was really fun. I was thinking of getting 3 people on the map this time.

It's an interesting idea, but there's a lot of stuff that's reliant on the grid, and would need some serious reworking. Positioning, which is huge in this game, tends to be much, much less so on an open board.

Now, what you could do is get some gridded fancy RPG terrain and play on that, but overall I think you're better finding an existing system and adapting the minis to that.
