what small ships do I need to add?

By JimMe, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I'll be playing my very 1st game next weekend with two other 1st timers, we will be playing 1 vs 1, 2 vs 1, and 1 vs 1 vs 1. I'm the one who discovered the game so I've been collecting the ships myself and I'm worried about not having enough small ships to fill out different teams. I really don't want to run into problems of not having the right amount of small ships. I'm fine with the large and epic ships, so they aren't my worry. I'd appreciate an experienced opinion on what ships I should add, so any suggestions are welcomed. This is what I have so far.

Imperial

Tie - 4

Tie Fo - 5

Bomber - 1

Advanced - 2

Phantom - 1

Punisher - 2

Defender - 2

Interceptor - 3

Inquisitor - 0 (missed him somehow) will get 1

Rebels

X wing - 3

X 70 - 3

A wing - 4

B wing - 3

Hwk - 1

K wing - 1

E wing - 1

Y wing (including scum) 3

Z 95 - (including scum) 4

Scum

Mist hunter - 2

M3-A - 1

Kihraxz - 1

Star Viper - 1

You need the Inquisitor for sure, he is good. After that you look good for small ships. For the Imperials maybe another tie bomber or phantom. More ties if you want to run a large swarm, otherwise your good. For the rebels, another K wing or even two. For scum, perhaps another Starviper or a Karhanx or two.

That's a lot for never playing before. :)

Have you all run through the tutorial game? 1 X wing vs 2 TIEs? If not, that's where I'd start. Learn how to fly the ships before you start worrying about upgrades and abilities and everything. Once you've all kind of goreng the hang of it, then run through the missions that come in the core sets. They give you a good intro to upgrades and abilities. Once you've gone through all of that, then you can add in stuff. Go slow, I'd start with a 6 TIE (fighters, can add TIE/fos if needed) swarm with Howlrunner on one side and maybe two X wings and two B wings on the other side. Maybe an upgrade or two on each side.

This is coming from a guy who jumped in head first and started building lists before he ever played. As fun as a 4 Heavy Scyk Interceptor swarm sounded on paper, on the table, it didn't do too hot. I didn't understand positioning, blocking, maneuvering or outmaneuvering at all, and I got thrashed for it. Think of it this way, when they train fighter pilots, they put them in spotted down training models first (similar to what they will fly, but very basic), then add they progress in their training, they put them in increasingly more capable jets, until they are flying the real thing. It's only after they graduate from training though that they get any sort of actual armament on the jet (they simulate munitions while in training). So even the best pilots of today had to walk before they ran. Best to follow suit.

Happy flying, and welcome to X wing!
