RtL Monster Placement

I am not totally clear on this but if the app states to place 1 monster, such as a cave spider, does it mean a single spider or 1 group of cave spiders?

1 monster. Up to group limit. Red monster, if it is not on the map already.

If game instruct you to place GROUP of monsters, it will say a GROUP of monsters.
