Should I buy the second ISD?

By Hamanu1, in Star Wars: Armada

So, I have one of everything except the Raider and MKII and I play only Imperials (so far). My local store finally got a tiny bit of stock of Armada products and I was thinking whether to get a raider or another ISD.

I only played casually so far, but I was intrigued by the awesome firepower of 2 ISDs in one game in which I combined my fleet with that of another IMP player.

So, basically, are 2 ISDs fun or do they gobble far too many points and make the imperial game too straightforward and limited in terms of options and maneuvers?

So far I've been running ISD, VSD, Gladiator (all the ships I have) + a few squardrons, but I would probably get rid of the VSD if I had other options, be that more gladiators + raiders or another ISD.

Since my funds are limited I'm not sure which would be the better path for me, 2 monstrosities supported a demolisher and/or squadrons or a couple raiders + another gladiator?

Get another Gladiator. They are fine ships even without Demo. Insidious can be funny too. And cheap.

I vote for a second ISD. 2 ISDs with squadron support is wonderful.

I personally do not like having only two activations. If I ever run two ISDs again they'll have Demo along for the ride.

I think with Gozantis being a thing soon, you might hold off until that drops to see how you like them as squadron pushers. I second the Gladiator recommendation.

If you do not have a raider yet, I would get that. I just have to have 1 (or 3) of everything.

actually a raider and a Glad are probably about the same price as 1 ISD, so go with a raider and a 2nd glad

The question isn't whether you should buy the second, it's whether you should buy the 3rd...

With opinions being so divided I guess I'll have to go to the store and go by feeling. ISD or Gladiator+Raider, both are great options..

Why can't I simply afford everything? :D

yup i love my 2 ISD build

I got me 3 ISD's. Of all the armada ships I have, these are the three I am absolutely certain I wanted.

You should. Then you can get the third one later.

Until FFG erratas the Demolisher, there's not really any need for a second ISD. Every Imperial list should have the Demolisher in it, and it's very tough to squeeze two ISDs alongside the Demolisher.

3ISD build? In a 400 point limit they're going to be pretty virgin and without fighter support :D

A stock ISD doesn't need many upgrades. A Gunnery Team is more than sufficient for the purpose of spreading your fire around if you need additional damage output.

I ran 3 in a tournament a few months ago. Very few things were willing to even try engaging. Nothing tabled me and the only straight loss was when I got greedy and overextended.

Yes, if for no other reason than that they look so good one the table. Plus your opponent gets to say "Star Destroyers, two of them, coming right at us!" Seriously though, a double ISD fleet suffers from limited activations, but is still a viable option. I've won many games running two ISDs.

If you play casually, and can talk someone else into a higher than 400 point game... No reason not to have as many ISDs as you can afford. Currently there are 5 in my collection, because they are fun to paint, and look cool in the display case. ;)

I buy 2 of everything.

I usually do Quad Turrets+Tractor, and XI7's on two of them (Avenger on the other). Run Ozzel for maneuverability. Keep them close, for mutual support. I tend to circle them so I have one covering the other's rear arc with it's front arc at all times. Ram and do stacking/denial maneuvers whenever possible. Tractors are great on these monsters. Gunnery teams are expensive, and although nice, you still throw 2 red and 2 black on the sides, so I see the points as usable elsewhere. On ISD-2's it is more useful, but it's hard to fit 3 ISD-2's plus admiral in 400pts in the first place...

I vote against it. 2 and 3 ISD lists tend to be a little 1 dimensional. fun for a few times. and then they collect dust.. while looking very pretty doing so.

Fixed it for you.

I am looking forward to trying 3 x ISDI 2 x Gonzo Motti list.

Squads, Raider, Gladiator, it gives more options. Personally I love more options.

Take advantage of a store sale before you buy it...that way the wallet isn't stung so bad.

Yes. And buy a third ISD too.

i bought 2 ISDs. I wasn't going to buy another one, until I realised that they would certainly make one of the new style star destroyers from TFA sooner rather than later, and that I would be able to put the 3 of them into a mega-triangle like the triforce and hum the Imperial March.

True story.

Double ISDs plus a squadron ball (I actually prefer running a space superiority ball thrown around by a I-1 with Relentless) can be very effective, especially if your opponent has trouble bringing enough damage to bear at once to kill one before the other arrives and helps clean house. Another Demolisher or another Raider and squadrons can also be very effective, depending on your playstyle. My actual current favorite list is one ISD and two Raiders, plus squadrons, or theoretically Demolisher, though usually it's fighter support. If you want to play more tactical, involved games, do the Glad and Raider. If you enjoy steamrolling your opponents and not needing more sophisticated (starship) tactics than point and shoot, get the ISD.
