Anyone up for seeing some Painted Miniatures? Click here.

By Styfen, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Thought I'd share some of the minis I've painted from the recent sets.

If people are interested, I'll update this sporadically when I get other things painted, I'm currently working on rebasing everything first.

Classic Giants (I prefer them over the new ones)

Chaos Beasts

As an aside, anyone able to help me out after my Baron Zach cards got destroyed beyond use? The wiki has the card text, but there is no Plot deck template out there it seems.

I can't help you out with reproducing your Zachareth plot deck, but that is an absolutely gorgeous paint job! The color gradiation on those chaos beasts is glorious!

I tip my hat to your immense talents, sir.

Good job. looks cool.

thanks for sharing.

This is ridiculously well done. You have my respect master.

This is the first time I've seen someone paint FFG miniatures with the same level of quality I used to see on Citadel Miniatures in White Dwarf. I think that's partially because the quality of FFG's sculpting has significantly improved over the past few years, but you're clearly a very talented artist.

You've inspired me to dust off my paints and work on some of my own Descent minis. I look forward to seeing more of your work (especially on the Wraiths from Manor of Ravens, considering how well you executed the Hellhounds' flames.)

Neat!

I second that about the shading on those chaos beasts! Love em:)

Can you offer any tips on how you got that shading so smooth?

Im up for seeing some more.

Love the color patterns, especially on the bane spiders and hellhounds!

color and schemes are really cool, impressive !

But I'm surprised about the base and the old giants (Personnally, since it's just a board game, there's no use of such)

Ok, ok. I'll stop painting.Humiliation no more :D

Gargan Mirklace

I never realized Mirklace had legs. Until you showed him painted he always just looked like a floating torso dragging his entrails around. Poor guy has tiny feet.

Everyone who has responded, thank you for your kind words. I do agree that the miniature sculpt quality on the Descent stuff has improved, it's the reason why I'm doing this. The original minis weren't really worth putting that much effort into, but these new ones are close to the quality that many miniature lines make.

Thanks, the main way I achieve it is with a lot of patience, blending between two layers and then thin washes to smooth out the transitions.

So, for example, running from blue to red I blocked out the areas of red and blue with solid colours and then at the area they met I blended the blue on top of the red. Once this was done I glazed everything with thin amounts of blue (the top area) and red (across the red with a blue). It's complicated to explain, but really the main answer is glazes do a LOT to even out transitions in colour.

You can also blend colours by mixing, which is easier to do, just add a bit of the colour your switching to, add a band and then blend it with the previous band. If you're patient and keep the colour change reasonable each band then it doesn't take much to fool the eye into thinking the colours are gradually switching from one to the next. I hope that makes sense, but the main trick is to keep going back and working on a miniature until you're satisfied. The more time spent, the better the final look.

As crazy as it might seem, some of my work is achieved by painting the colours, washing, highlighting and glazing, then going back and redoing the process a second time entirely. I have one set of trolls where in order to get a really deep rich green I painted their skin a total of three times, building on each layer one after another.

Bone Horrors:

I'm probably going to finish the Mists of Bilehall models before I complete any of the other sets. I rather like the Reanimates and Broodwaker sculpts and I really like all the Lieutenants, especially Zarihell.

I second that. Mists has some fun minis - backed up by their cool abilities

Have you ever posted a painting guide online? I would love to gain some insight into your method.

Tristayne Olliven

Not happy with the photography on this one, he does not look good here.

I did write up a painting guide a while ago, however I ended up taking it down because of the sheer number of people who wanted shortcuts and didn't appreciate the sheer number of steps involved and the way I use off pallet colours at various steps.

I can probably do a new one, but there would really need to be a lot of interest because of the time involved in creating such a thing.

Can't you put the old one back up? Or did you delete it?

Nice paint job!

Yeah it's gone, lost in the annuls of time.

Few new paint jobs.

Rats! Our loss.

So sexy, oh Styfen you randy bastard...

I've finished the Mists of Bilehall set - all monsters + lieutenants and I'll get the photos up tomorrow.

I'm painting Nanok as a break, but I'm also keen to paint a second hero - is there anyone people would like to see?

After these two heroes are done I'm going to get the Shadows of Nerekhall done because it seems like the best campaign written so far.

Top three heroes I'd like to see you paint are:

1. Vyrah the Falconer

2. Zyla

3. Ispher
