Fett's Crew: A.K.A. It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time

By Guy Wearing Black, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Points. Points. And more points. I get it, there must exist some restriction to assess the list. To clarify, I've posted these lists and game concept to one or two other places--but those communities are more of, shall we say, ‘Timmy’ and ‘Johnny’ player types whereas this thread seems to contain more ‘Spike’ minded players (Anyone familiar with the three MTG players/Gamers?). That's a fair point. Let's say this crazy idea works and the list works, eventually my friends are going want to maximize their lists to bring these three pilots down.

For the record, this game idea started with a ‘Three of your best against three of mine--fully upgraded’ that evolved into other ‘Hey, that’s cool! What about--” and so on and so on. We arrived on this movie themed idea where we could consider doing three fat aces vs four to six low skill /unnamed pilots. Eventually we got very generous with point totals but still trusted the other player to never abuse it to such an unfair advantage that it makes the game heavily one sided. Naturally, it’s normal to mention a counter-list of some ridiculously large amount against three ships. So let’s get a rule set for this to proceed. How about, the total squad point of of each pilot in the list must not exceed 100 points.

That way, at max, you’d see three aces fighting four to eight ships where a squad point total puts you easily in the high 150s and beyond. I’d feel comfortable taking Fett’s crew against eight Academy Pilots. Granted, all three hunters fire first during the combat phase means it could end up very well being five TIEs against three real quick. Hell, I might as well plan for Vader with four Black Squadron aces while we’re at it. That seems reasonable to me. So, eight A-Wings? No. More like four to five. I’m okay with that.

Then again, this might have been implied already as I have an Ace Killer (Ace against Ace/Three on Three) and Swarm Killer list for situations just like this. Now that we have a somewhat reasonable rule established, shall we discuss the lists?

Cool, cool. Now we're kinda getting somewhere. All that being said, if your only limitation is "Three fatties who are under 100pts (which is every non-epic ship), why use Zuckuss in the G-1A over IG-88B or Bossk? Both of those ships are more expensive, it doesn't matter under this rule set, and both are beefier. If it's because you want your list to include Zuckuss and 4-L0M, let them tag along with Bossk.

Boba Fett (Scum) (39)
Predator (3)
Heavy Laser Cannon (7)
Thermal Detonators (3)
Tail Gunner (2)
Cluster Missiles (4)
Glitterstim (2)
Extra Munitions (2)
Shield Upgrade (4)
Slave I (0)
Dengar (33)
Predator (3)
Proton Torpedoes (4)
Extra Munitions (2)
Recon Specialist (3)
R5-P8 (3)
Glitterstim (2)
Guidance Chips (0)
Punishing One (12)
Bossk (35)
Veteran Instincts (1)
"Mangler" Cannon (4)
Homing Missiles (5)
Zuckuss (1)
K4 Security Droid (3)
4-LOM (1)
Inertial Dampeners (1)
Guidance Chips (0)
Hound's Tooth (6)
Total: 185
And just to keep with the theme, I've bloated each ship as much as humanly possible.
Bossk will make for a superb ace killer, as an enhanced Party Bus. Dengar can do mondo work with Recon Spec as long as he doesn't bump (and one turn if he does, thanks to Glitterstim). Boba is the odd man out at PS8, but he's got 4 dice in the front, reduces green dice out the rear arc, and has great secondary weapons for surprise rudeness.

Okay, I'm open to it.

This seems like a very aggressive list, and I'm not opposed to it--I kinda want to try it. But, I'd still like to try and work a ship list in with the Mist Hunter. I do plan on getting the Hound’s Tooth, I just don't have one yet. I like the quirkiness of that little ship so much and I feel can we upgrade the G-1A into something with a little more defensive playstyle? I like aggressive Bossk-style assaults. But in a dog-fighting game, I kinda want to try my hand at outmaneuvering them--defensive Arc dodging tactics and the works, this is an Top Ace game after all. So could we take another shot with Zuckuss?

But for the other two, I like but have followup questions. The biggest question being that this has to be the first time I've seen someone choose another modification for Fett other than Engine Upgrade. Four points seems like a lot for something that you lose after one volley--then gone completely. I thought Boba Fett and Engine Upgrade are just universal match up no matter what faction you play him on. So, I'm curious about this decision. Also, I assume Thermal Detonators are the standard for bombs right now? I see the advantages of a free action bomb versus an action hungry mine. To me, personally, Fett' usually has more high value targets in his front and rear arcs. So it seemed natural for me to use Cluster Mines to get that chance to drop six attack die on top of a large ship--that seems like a fast way to leave party favors at your closest Palpmobile. But, what do I know. Care to expand?

The Punishing One takes the same aggressive nature on your list--a coincidence by name? No EU, Guidance Chips for those sweet criticals. And Dengar goes Rec Spec over PTL Gonk. But I’ve got this nagging feeling that I may have to keep Dengar defensive as he currently exists as a very secure cover-fire for the rest of the squad. But, it seems the aggressive style is the whole point of this list--can’t dispute the intent. So you're going with what you know.

I suppose then the next question is, how should I fly these ships? All offensively? All defensively? A nice healthy mix of both. From my perspective, all three seem to need each archetype differently. The Punishing One is the offensive tank whose pilot ability works as a defensive deterrent. The Mist Hunter is the glass cannon who gets aggressive at close range but ultimately fragile without support. And Slave I is that mix between offensive ace hunting and defensive flying. At least, that’s the idea I got from it. But, this is a discussion--so let’s discuss!

Oh, that's an easy answer;

Mistake. I meant for that to be an Engine Upgrade.
