Am I the only one that actually really likes the T-65? Sure I will admit it has its fair share of problems but I like how it flys, in an odd way, I like how it can be customized easily, has a great set of unique feeling pilots, and has such a strong main gun. I think integrated Astromech was a really nice buff for it, not perfect but good, but this ship seems largely ignored. Again I know it's not a beast, but I have mained it for a long time, I don't often lose, and when I do I usually put up a pretty good fight, the game being decided by 1 or 2 bad rolls. So I am curious, am I a nostalgic fool clinging to something futile, or so others see this ship as a nice versatile supporter for a squad?
T-65 Love
I totally LOVE the T-65. I have build that is currently 5-1 in the casual games I've played, both with friends in home games and with strangers at public pick-up games. It is 4 T-65s. I haven't brought it to a tournament yet, but I will probably bring it to the next tournament I play in. It isn't my strongest build, but I enjoy it more than most of the others I have.
Nope. I'm right there with you
I want to bring one of my teams in to a tourney haven't had the chance with a good x-wing list, but in casual where we are playing to win, I have almost always had a T-65 on my team and it always seems to prove pretty valuable, especially against newer ships, some of them are tough nuts to crack, and my X-Wing has just the teeth for it.
I really like it, and have flown Wedge whenever possible, even in tournaments. I do feel it hard to get back into the fight once you disengage. But its very versatile and not action dependent unlike some other ships out there. I'm constantly trying to find ways to fit one or two into a squad.
Do I think they need a "fix", no, not really. IA does a lot. But I wouldn't mind some extra droids and maybe some other fun toys to make them more fun.
Loving the T65 right now. It's rewarding me enough that I may hit a tournament soon with it. Rookie pilots no less. I've been able to fly them as a team and cover the angles nicely.
My Trench Run Trio list is probably one of my favourite out of all things X-Wing. I've only gotten the chance to play it a dozen or so times, but it's won far more than its lost.
I was always into Rogue lists that aren't predator dependent. But yeah more droids would help, and I agree I am not sure a fix is the key, it did need more HP or movement for its cost but there are lots of cards for both of those now. They are also rather cheap for what they are, I mean yeah a b is tougher and more cqc maneuverable, but a b cannot disengage or chase unless you really invest in it, xwings seem better at that.
I don't see how it's easily customized with only 3 relevant slots (astro, ept, integrated)
that's honestly the biggest problem with the X, it just doesn't do much despite being mathematically inefficient relative to even the tie fighter
if they work for you, there's absolutely nothing wrong with them, but compared to quite a few options they are simply lacking not just in "power" but simply in things they are capable of doing. No native boost nor roll, no real standout dial, standard 3 dice gun with no real way to improve it...
apart from some fringe Biggs and Wedge play (abilities are beastly), they're basically gone locally. Hopefully, FFG adds to the game's titular ship and opens up options available to it
Hobbie Klivian is a beast, who's job I cannot describe because he can do anything. I admit that the X needs the upgrades, but there are lots of good droids, epts, and mods for it. Honestly all it's missing is the system upgrade. Even so it is very capable, consider one of the most common B-Wings Keyan. He has PS 7 so he can dodge but not the likes of Wedge, Wes, Luke, possibly Porkins (initiative) plus a bunch of others that could take d6 for EPT and have VI for 2 pts and IA for free. And they can do some things Keyan just can't, the X-Wing can easily kill a B-Wing, which a well kitted set of X-wings can do depending on who is flying what. It's not that Keyan is bad, I just find my super Wedge eats him alive. Also if Keyan takes VI to keep up he is now suffering from a lack of PTL or SOT. Again this is all a matter of preference and tastes, I just think a ship with so many good pilots shouldn't be overlooked.
It's a brilliantly fun little ship and it makes for a solid jouster. Unfortunately, in the competitive meta, that means it's pretty useless
. (Not saying that it CAN'T do well -- just that it often doesn't).
That's the sad thing, I think super Wedge has potential, but 2 currently popular builds are a little painful if he is not cautious... And that set up can dodge:
Wedge: BB-8, Push the Limit, Engine Upgrade. 38. Expensive but from flying it if you aren't pilot skill 9+ he is very good at hopping right into range 1 and arc dodging, plus dealing massive damage.
Nope. I'm right there with you

As they stand, I don't think the T-65 is tourney viable above the local level. By that I mean a squad of 3 or 4. That being said, I still prefer to fly it than anything else. Four of them, each with a different astromech, is a fun build in casual games. And it's not a pushover. A combined 20 HP, capable of dropping 12 to 16 dice per turn isn't too shabby. Yes they suffer from a lack of post maneuver positioning and the 2 agility isn't great but they are the P-47 of the Star Wars galaxy.
I agree that a couple of new mechs designed for the generic pilots would be great. And as much as I would like to see a true "fix", the T-65 will never have the moves of a T-70 or an A-Wing. It will be what it was designed to be: a good (not great) strike fighter.
Long live the X-Wing!
It is a sturdy fighter with IA.
I don't have the pilots and upgrades which come with the transport (not enough epic), but even with the core-set and expansion you have a good choice. The basic jack-of-all-trades. Hope they bring an expansion pack with the comming film (please, not with an epic or large ship ffg! One time is enough!)
Also still hope they release a Corsec green One. With Corran, Whistler, R5-G8, Tycho Celchu...
Edited by CununculusIndeed. Without some serious work, I don't think you'll ever see much of the generics, but the named X-wings are certainly good. There are so many pilots, and so many with very good pilot abilities. Which I guess makes sense - where the ship is, you'll always struggle to get much traction with the generics.
Four generics have to compete with the T-70, which it logically can't be as good as and is a matchup which suffers from the better ship already having the exact same upgrade slots (even down to 'X-wing Only'), whilst a theoretical points discount allowing 5 generics just moves the problem by stealing the Khiraxz' thing.
The named pilots have such a range of abilities, though, and any further pilots only add to the options. I'd love to see a passel of unique pilots and astromechs, and, as noted, the only thing I'd consider would be a title to give them some built-in dice modification (which would also help those pilots and astromechs with die roll-related abilities like Porkins and R5-K6).
The X-wing isn't bad at the moment. One of the nice things is that you can get several high PS ships quite easily. Fitting in three PS10 ships in a squad (VI Luke, VI Wes, Adaptability Wedge) and still having enough points to load them out with toys is impressive - and frustrating as hell for everyone taking Soontir Fel.
A squad that's actually done really well locally is the above - Wedge with BB-8 is surprisingly manoeuvrable, whilst Wes' ability is annoying as hell against jumpmasters as he can keep them from firing indefinitely....
Biggs is the girlfriend you just cant help but spend lots of make up time with after the break up.
As I started with Star Wars with ep IV, the T65 is my favourite ship. I have been trying a 3 ship build, Wes, Wedge and Garven, but I straight haven't had the experience and practice to make a good job of it. I've been building my forces up, but eventually I intend to have 3-4 T70, 8-10 T65's and I have the rebel transport (for the OT sqn pilots) fort Falcon, YT2400, Ghost and Phantom and a selection of A wings, Z's - even a B wing
T-65 is my favorite Rebel ship. It's much better in games beyond 100 pts where arc dodging aren't as big a thing. It's got speed, firepower, and durability that really matter in games where you need to get places. That's Epic and Missions. Faster than a B-wing and more firepower than an A-wing. Pew pew!
Long live the T-65. I've said before, when I loose using the T-65 it is because I lost...or just bad rolls. I missed judged a movement, placed the wrong token, didn't weigh the opponents options enough, etc. (Why, that is similar to when I loose at poker!! hmmm)
More unique pilots? Would be fun. More droids? Yes!! A title card? Absolutely! Everyone else already has one!!
I love the T-65. It is one of the most balanced ships IMO. I don't mean balanced in relation to the current meta and cost efficiency, but balanced in that it's got good offense, OK defense, generics that are cheap enough to use, uniques with great abilities, interesting upgrade options (while not as many slots, astromechs add a lot of fun options). It's good at a lot, but not great at anything, which is why I think it is so much fun to fly, despite not being the most efficient use of points.
I love flying Luke, both for the thematic appeal, but also because using his ability coupled with Lone Wolf, IA, and shield regen can make him very survivable.
For my next game, I'm cueing up Luke, Wedge, and Wes for some fun!
Hobbie, R3-A2, IA
Wedge, BB-8, Outmaneuver, IA
Wes, Adaptability +1, R2-D2, EU
I love the old x-wing and I have won the last to tournaments I played with t-65's. BB-8 Wedge is the new black in my book.

I am not so sure about the 3 X wing list anymore, it's strong for causal but one slip up ruins it in tournament play very quickly, making it less viable without Biggs which is not the best use of points in my opinion, he's good for keeping things alive but he makes maneuvering more predictable except when the formation breaks, and then all of your ships are vulnerable. Even so a lists with various X-Wings are totally viable with the addition of other ships which I think is where it belongs now, a valuable and surprising team asset.
