Fire Control Systems Question

By shaner, in X-Wing

Hey folks,

We have been using the FCS in a certain way and I just wanted to ensure that I was using it correctly. Here we go:

I have a ship with FCS. (1) I move in to attack (2) I choose to focus (3) I throw my 3 red dice

(4) I IMMEDIATELY acquire a TL as per FCS (5) I use newly acquired TL to mod my dice that I have just thrown. Is this correct???

We had a discussion lately where we questioned what we were doing. We are wondering is the TL is actually acquired AFTER the opponent defends and can be used in the NEXT round of combat?

I hope that we are using this correctly...and I like how we are using it....but I would like to be sure.

Thanks

No

You are using it incorrectly. After attacking does not mean "after you roll", it encompasses all steps of an attack, including modifying dice and comparing results.

No

Useful.

Vessery works like that. R4 agromech works like that.

Fcs target locks after the attack is over.

FCS only works after the entire attack has been completed, then you may acquire a TL (to be used on your next attack).

Certain circumstances/abilities let you use it during the same round, for instance a ship with TLT and FCS. First attack does not get TL, but after that first attack, you use FCS for a TL, then the second attack with TLT gets to use the TL. Used the same way with Gunner crew.

Thanks folks..

Just to add one more item...If I have a Weapons Engineer (allows a ship to acquire 2 target locks) does that work in conjunction with FCS? Can I acquire 2 TL through the FCS?

Thanks

Yes. The TLs must be on different ships though.

Yes.

Yes, but weapons engineer is one per ship. you cant have 2 TLs on the same target

I believe there is a Punisher which would like to have a word with you about that.

What is IS great for is, say, shooting cluster missiles.

You fire your first shot. Then get a target lock you can use on the 2nd shot. Then the 2nd shot gives you another target lock you can use the next round.

For completeness: yes, you get 2 TLs through FCS, one must be on the target of the attack, the other can be on any ship within your normal TL range limits (unless Captain Kagi is around, in which case you get one on the target of the attack and the second on Kagi).

He can have words all he wants. His pilot ability is obviously the exception, otherwise it states on the card, only 1 TL per ship

That is certainly true but when you go and talk about the Weapons Engineer exception one should also mention the other exceptions.

Although it may be easier for some to read my bigger issue is with making absolute statements like "you can't have 2 TLs on the same target" when there are exceptions. It may be true most of the time but when someone learns in absolutes they can run into trouble with the exceptions. I normally try to include some leeway in statements perhaps by saying "you generally can't have..." which should convey the normal rule but leaves the space for the exception.

Sorry, I agree I try to include exceptions and not speak in absolutes (only Sith do that, JK I had to), but he was asking about FCS + Weapon Engineer, punishers can't do that, so I didn't think to include Mr RedLine. My apologies to him and you.

Besides that I thought I would be a nice play on words to send a Punisher to talk to you. A factual statement with a big sarcasm included and the possibility of painting an interesting picture of someone in a Skull shirt coming to talk to you. :)

While we're on the subject of FCS, i ran into an interesting problem during one of my regional games this past weekend. I was attacked and dealt a crit from the old damage deck which was blinded pilot. It roughly states, "the next time you attack, do not roll any attack dice." So I attack, roll no dice, and try to acquire my TL on Dash, my opponent says I cannot and we call the TO over and he agrees with my opponent. FCS states, "after you perform an attack, you may acquire a TL." I know for a fact I could anyway after losing the argument now because the old blinded pilot paired with gunner allows for the second attack. Gunner also says, " after you perform an attack that did not hit, you may immediately perform a PW attack." Because gunner says, "after you perform an attack" and FCS says, "after you perform an attack," I should be allowed to acquire the TL because of the gunner/old blinded pilot crit rule. Thoughts?

I would think you could get a TL. Same ruling as spending a focus token to change zero results or Farlander shedding stress to modify zero eyeballs

You should have acquired the target lock. With the new damage deck - no. The old damage deck - yes.

TO was wrong.

With the old DD you may not have gotten to roll any dice with that attack but if you had Accuracy Corrector you could then have added the two hit results despite having something that shouldn't have been able to do anything. Clearly this should have triggered FCS.
