Cannon Vs. EU

By emmjay, in X-Wing

The Extended Universe (which was a sh*tty name in my opinion, it's a galaxy, not a universe)

It doesn't refer to something in story, it's a meta term. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expanded_universe

I *KNOW*. I think it's a stupid meta term. It's not a fictional universe, it's a fictional Galaxy. I hate the term 'universe' when applied to various works in fandoms, especially when he scope of said works is rarely larger than a town or county, much less an entire planet.

OCD rant mode off.

I thought it was meant to be more like "alternate universe", as in within the rules of the alternate universe where the characters of Friends or whatever are real...

What a waste of an alternate universe. I'd rather go where everyone knows your name.

Major Bren Derlin likes to frequent a bar called Cheers, so people seem to know his name there, but he is undercover as a postman named Cliff.

Someone here gets it!

The Yuuzhan Vong came from another galaxy. Number of Galaxies > 1 = Universe. Expanded Universe . Bam! Debate over. Math Wing ftw.

Ssi-ruuvi Imperium was technically extra-galatical too. So now you've got 3!

But...

Is E.T. canon?

The Prequels are listed amongst the canon, so I guess the answer is an affirmative.

Sorry, I meant the movie, not the species. :P .

Couldn't possibly be canon... I thought it was a documentary.

At this point I'm going to assume that anything not in a movie or TV show is optional in regards to the creation of the next movie or TV show. i.e. If they write a book about Dengar but want to do something entirely different in this young Han Solo film the book gets thrown out the window. What happens or doesn't happen to tie-in stories being canon and helping or hindering sales is chump change in comparison to what they think will sell movie tickets (frankly putting the TV shows in line to be axed from canon if so desired.) And make no mistake that selling movie tickets will always come first.

Think about it like this:

1,000 after the rise of Palpatine, what stories will people be telling about the events? Some of those stories will involve Luke and Mara getting married. Some will involve Rey on her quest to find Luke. Some will be about Outbound Flight. Some will involve Ahsoka going into exile.

That's the main difference between "Legends" and "Disney Canon".

And that's... Kind of exactly how fairy tales work. So I'm kind of excited that Disney went that route.

Given that they've outright satated that non-tv/movie media (games, books, comics) are canon, and they have people overseeing the stories from those outlets, I doubt they're gonig to directly contradict anything.

My head canon is that Friends takes place in the MCU, but before Ironman reveals himself. Everything about the show is exactly as it seems, save that Phoebe is Black Widow.

Not on purpose anyways... the idea that the Disneyverse would some how be more tightly controlled and be of consistently better quality than the EU has already fallen apart. That said, the infighting amongst authors where they kill each others characters or write them out of the story is not super likely.
