I got into a discussion the other day with a fellow Star Wars fan. We were arguing what was official Cannon and what was EU. From what I can tell, per Disney, the following is considered cannon:

All Movies (Episodes 1-7 + "Star Wars Stories")

Clone Wars TV Show

Rebels TV Show

Books that have come out since Force Friday (those book specifically written after Disney's takeover)

What about everything else that Disney approves before release? The Jumpmaster 5000? Manaroo? They appeared in Tales of Bounty Hunters. Are they now retconned back into being cannon? Same thing with the Mist Hunter. What about all the planets in the Rebellion game. Honoghr, for example, first appeared in the Thrawn trilogy. The TIE Punisher was from Galactic Battlegrounds. Does that make that PC game now cannon? Disney is pulling willy-nilly from EU and original sources and it gets confusing......

Well cannons are a different slot. EU goes in the modification slot, so you could use both

They can (and now must) be Disney-Approved... But that does not make them canon .

Remember what Disney said? They didn't just throw out EU. They said it's kind of true, until they over write it. It's "legends".

What does that mean? It means they are probably going to take all the best bits of all the EU and re-write it so it fits into the official Canon better.

While Dengar and Manaroo haven't been put into official canon, you can probably bet that they will eventually get there, but via a different plot line. Forget "Tales of the Bounty Hunter", but expect to see a lot of the characters and ships from that series included in something at some point.

I've the perfect response to the Canon/EU debate....

All the old EU is now considered "Legends". This allows the new Disney EU to pick and choose what they want from it. All the movies and the CW/Rebels TV shows are officially canon, as are the new books/comics that have come out after Disney took over. Everything else is up to Disney- they control the IP now.

The Millenium Falcon is in the new film. By this appraoch, that would make everything that included the Millenium Falcon canon, including the Star Wars Holiday Special.

You can easily use part of some old material without recanonising the entirety of it. Disney can use Thrawn, for example. That doesn't recanonise the Thrawn trilogy, just a blue alien mastermind. I'm not sure where the idea that every release is an unsplittable parcel that is either recanonised in entirety or not at all.

As for Thrawn, it looks like he's going to be put into the Star Wars Rebels tv show next season. So, he will be added in. There are also rumors that he might be the villain in Aftermath that is supporting Admiral Sloan. They could roll into something like the Thrawn trilogy. I can see them redoing something like the Thrawn trilogy eventually....except better...and official.

As others have said, Disney Approved /= Canon. Disney approves the ships and characters that FFG releases and that other vendors produce. That said, the only aspect of those ships and characters are only canon if they are shown in the aforementioned Canon media.

For example, if one of the new books mentions that there is an Imperial pilot named Whisper, that does not mean that the TIE Phantom exists in canon, (unless of course the book states that it exists).

Thing is, Disney didn't come out and say the EU never existed or that none of that material will ever be used. Just that it would not be considered canon going forward. If someone decides they want to pluck up Mara Jade, they're not forbidden from doing so; it's just not assumed she exists. And anything previously written about her is under no obligation to be adhered to.

Which leaves a whole lot of already created characters and frame work for a lot of stories that people will surely use again....but not in the same way. I'm sure Mara Jade will get used at some point by Disney because she's pretty popular and too cool a concept to not use.
