Road to Legend - would be nice if it resolved more things like dice rolls and movement

By VaultDweller, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

New to Descent (waiting on the App but play Imperial Assault) so just starting to get a feel for the app with the tutorial. It's cool so far but I was hoping to see the app resolve more things for the group including dice rolls, damage, surges, and monster movement. I was expecting something like:

  • select active hero
  • move hero and select space of the tile where movement ended to indicate where the character is
  • finish turn
  • app selects monster movement based on knowing where players are, makes a decision, shows you where the monster moves
  • app resolves attacks with the players seeing the dice roll, damage, etc.

I'd be fine with selecting a few more things on the map tiles so the game knows the set-up / current position if I didn't have to resolve all of the other actions and I think it would really speed up play.

I'm thinking FFG didn't want to add too much to the app so that you would still need the physical game.

I get that. The app is only supposed to be a companion to the physical game so there's a balance there. Since FFG is the leader in app and physical game merging maybe there's another way to ensure you have a physical copy of the game like a key or serial number registration. Yes it adds infrastructure for a registration system / validation system but I could see the benefits for both players and FFG.

That's unlikely, because FFG would have to submit the codes to players which didn't keep their game boxes or the "proof of purchase"-tokens. (<-- I don't know how they are called but I hope you know what I mean)

Also, some of the monster packs and campaigns came without a code on the "proof of purchase"-tokens.

How would FFG offer these codes? If a photo would be enough, you could just send the ones from another person or if they want you to come to a partner store or something you could still use the figures of another person to geth it.... and there could be thousands of people with the same problem....

Buy a video game :P ... (kidding). Theres a boardgame with this approach, golem arcana, and far from being a success.

For a app to make decisions with some space awereness its involves some heavy programation (Think in a chess game with numerous variants). Maybe I am wrong, but I dont see this kind of approach in near future.

If you have to tell the computer what to do, this only drags the game. You have to move you figure, then take you phone, move figure, take phone etc.

I'm pretty pleased with the balance so far. A bit concerned about the rules and how they adapt to the heroes but otherwise, well, I love rolling real dice. I've always had an aversion to computer assisted randomness (if you can even call it that). I would like more info on the card data but I'll live with the fact that I have to have the cards in front of me. I like cards too so that isn't a huge impact.

All in all my opinion is a bit different than yours and that is all it amounts to. We are doing two 4-player tables this Monday with the app and I'll see what others think.

I don't like that there are ONLY set campaigns. I would have hoped to get more out of it (even paid) with a random generator (with all that it entails, good and bad). Still, I'm pleased for what it's worth.

I was referring to a future enhancement based on what it would take to implement this. I could see in future products a single piece of paper with the serialized "App Key Code" inserted in it.

I get what you mean about the video game aspect. I love those too but really wanted a more powerful app just to drive things from a game mechanics Overlord standpoint and enhance the game play but NEVER substitute for the actual board game, dice , mins, etc. I know we're just at the infancy of board game and app mergers plus it's software so there's always a chance for enhancements!

I love rolling dice too and it can be fun when your friends are rolling the opponent's dice trying to pound you into the dungeon floor so I'm looking forward to your feedback, if you would share it, once you play the games on Monday.
