The Difference Between "Add" and "Increased"

By thecactusman17, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

This is not a question. It is a statement:

If you Add anything, this doesn't take effect until you already have something to add to. The obvious example is adding dice (Admiral Ackbar, Concentrate Fire) but there are actually a number of "Add" effects in the game, such as engineering points.

"Increase" is what you are secretly hoping for in the "Add" wording. Increase(d) means you take the base value, improve it, then do all your "Add" shenanigans. For example, Enhanced Armaments and Rapid Reload will INCREASE your side battery by one die. And Flight Controllers INCREASES your squadron's AS armament by one blue.

And of course, there's REDUCE and presumably SUBTRACT. Obviously, these are the opposite numbers of INCREASE and ADD. REDUCE is why you can't shoot your one attack die through an obstacle, as it takes place before any dice are rolled. If there is, or ever will be, a SUBTRACT keyword it won't happen until after you've rolled a die.

I thought the key phrases were

Ackbar = Attack pool

Enhanced armament = Battery armament

That's true for attacks, but as noted above both phrases come into play in other stats.

This is an "argument" of sorts that Lyraeus and I (and others) had previously.

I am of the opinion and statement that the above is incidentally correct thusfar .

But if we got a somewhat oddball card that told us to add 2 blue dice to the Front Battery Armament ... Then I would argue that it would work for Obstructions, as its added to the Battery Armament, and the Battery Armament is checked When You Gather Dice at the Start ...

Because you can't wait until the Dice Modification step, as you have no longer have a battery armament, you have a dice pool for an attack at that stage.

Its a similar loophole to how adding dice in the modification step can be dice 'out of range' because you're already beyond that part where it matters (gather dice step)...

So yes, again, I agree in theory thusfar ... And I do hope they continue the usage of the wording... But I am prepared, especially for the cases of those upgrades, to consider battery / anti-squadron armament vs dice pool/attack to be the more important signifier of the power and usage of the upgrade...

Because Flight Controllers is awesome vs Jamming Fields for TIE Bombers.

I would disagree with you on that Drasnighta. Remember, Add is specifically pointed out in the RRG that it happens during he modify step.

On a side note. This has been my unspoken rule for a long time now.

Which is why its been an argument/discussion that continues.

There is a distiction betwene Add and Increase.

There is also a distinction between adding dice to attacks and adding dice to something else .

That is all I have ever advocated.
