X-EPIC & THEMATIC PLAY = Gaming Scenes From The Films?

By Joe Boss Red Seven, in X-Wing

So how many of us have played our large X-EPIC and Thematic (Scenarios) games specifically inspired by the films?

For me I find myself running The Asteroid Chase from Empire, or the final glorious battle from Jedi... I even have a cute Death Star for battles going on around these huge climatic struggles.

We need some Battle of Hoth and Battle of Takodana action

Yeah I am working on that too, so is DB Draft and other Veterans here.

It can be done for sure...

;)

I've recreated..

From ANH:

-Red squadron

-black squadron

I've also tried to recreate rogue squadron from Official and home brewed pilots

Scenarios I've considered are the trench run, and missions from Tie Fighter the PC game

Well, probably an obvious one, but I'm looking forward to recreating the battle when the Falcon escapes the Death Star :D!

I ran a two table, epic scenario the other month. Not specifically from the movies, but inspired by the book "Lords of the Sith".

Imperials had blockaded Ryloth and the rebels were trying to run the blockade. We had three extra rebel transports "Full of supplies" and at least 2 had to make it through for Rebels to win. In my game, the transport killed more of the Imperials via running them over then the rebels did!

Has anyone been brave enough to think of a scenario for the Battle of Endor?

The%20Battle%20of%20Endor_zps4covlgpa.pn

I think for me, this would be the ultimate. Granted the Raider isn't a Star Destroyer, but I quite like it and I think they did such a nice job designing it that it "scratches" the Star Destroyer itch for me ;).

Yeah you can do it in X-EPIC, but it is even more like the film in ARMADA.

;)

This post reminded me of this beautiful endor map I came across while watching some xwing on YouTube. I wish I had the time and space to play around like these guys.

Another very fun mission that I like to run is a Imperial Prob Hunt which is like some of the missions already in the core game. I just love to fly around and roll some dice to detect the Prob.

So I do not know where the **** thing is until a roll for an asteroid indicates that it IS on that one... crazy blind-find high-jinks!!!

:D

We played the Endor space battle once.

Tons of points per side and only characters who feasably could have been there were allowed (so no Luke, Han, Vader etc as they were all doing other stuff either on the moon on or the death star etc)

Looks like a lot of FUN!

:)

I just did Dagobah Dave's Trench Run mission again. Once again, it came down to Luke having to make a desperate torpedo shot on the Exhaust Port, and he bricks his rolls!

We will be going over this scenario for The Shuttle Tydirium podcast tonight when we record Episode 4.

The way to do this I think would be to set up a 6x4 mat with the nebulon b down the middle, and simulate the attack on the medical frigate, which is probably the most interesting part of that fight from a dogfighting perspective.

Rebels get squads of 3 a-wings, 3 b-wings, 3 x-wings, Imps get 3 l/ns, 3 squints, 3 bombers, x however many fit into the points amount, mostly generics, the frigate has x health, probably a huge amount, and the imps have to kill its health before the time runs out (maybe ten or 15 turns). Both teams get a certain number of reinforcements each round.

I'm sure you could come up with something interesting.

We had fun with a few - Millenium Falcon Death Star escape isn't too hard to put together , 4 black squadron ties, and chewbacca pilot + luke & han crew - title, and a few other upgrades - start the falcon headed across the board and the 4 ties behind it.

Hoth Escape isn't too hard to do with some turbolaser rules from the imperial raider missions and the transports; likewise Endor and Yavin are a matter of balancing named pilots, points and possibly death star trench rules. - though I like the surface battle - destroying gun fixtures + ties.

Some other Canon Non Canon battles...

Ghost, TAP, Ties and Gozanti - it's possible to recreate some of the battles from star wars rebels.

and my favorite -

Dash Rendar + Starvipers + Ties - Skyhook battle.

Cool! Thanks for the details :D.

For my Badass Star Brahs up top... nice ideas gang!!!

I was chatting with a mate of mine a while ago about doing an Endor battle. We never pulled our fingers out and did it, but here are our stream of consciousness type ideas if anyone wants to run with any of them!

Firstly it was going to be huge, like 400-500 points a side, all OT ships, again only with people there, so no Vader, Luke, Palp, etc. All small ships, with maybe an epic ship or two, but essentially this is the fighter scrum on the Death Star edge of the main fleet engagement. The shield generator is still up, no fighter assault can commence until a certain condition has been met. Either a set turn limit, or some dice-reliant mechanic, or even an Imp Assault game if you like!

Once the shield is down there are two entry points along the Imp edge for Rebel fighters to exit from and fly into a separate Death Star superstructure table. This is 3'x3' with a V shaped area of clear terrain to represent the gaps the ships fly through. Two successful torpedo attacks against the power regulator and the main reactor win the Rebs the game. Imps can fly into the Deathstar but not until the first Reb has gone in.

Imps get reinforcements, as per the Trench Run scenario. They also get Turbolaser supporting fire as per the Reb Transport campaign. Rebs get a full complement of Proton Torpedoes for free.

To help keep such a big game manageable, we also decided to institute a Squadron rule. A Squadron was one Unique pilot and 2 generic wingmen in the same class of ship (or 3 wingmen for TIE Fighters). As long as they are in Range 1 of their squadron leader, the generics activate in the Activation phase at the same PS as their leader. But NOT in the combat phase. We thought this was a nice way to encourage people to fly in formation and might speed the game up. We also considered giving ships in formation with other members of their Squadron other bonuses, like a single re-roll but thought that might get difficult to track. Big ships like the Falcon (Lando with Nien Numb crew, naturally), can have two wingmen of a different class. Also, if you use Turbolaser support, any attack against a Unique pilot can be resolved against one of his anonymous wingmen.

Oh, and the Rebs lose if they have no fighters left on the main board at the end of any turn. The fluff for which is that they still need to defend their capital ships! The real reason is to stop the Reb player flying every last ship inside the Deathstar! We also considered having extra mini-win conditions for both sides, killing Lando, getting an Imp Shuttle off the Reb side of the board with an escaping Imperial VIP, stopping a TIE Bomber wing getting to the Rebel capital ships, anything like that.

Well, that was our thoughts, one day, one day I shall make it happen...

How dare you post actual fun ideas and such in this age of ADD... Nice!

I totally run Squadrons like you mention above, and give them little benefits too... it IS awesome and right out of the films Baby!

;)

Another joy to play in the annals of Boss' Awesome Sauces is AMBUSH! This was kinda in the films too (IT's A TRAP!!!)... but my version is a nice focused attack and full of Outer Rim Sneakies Flavor... love it, love it, love IT!

:D

Basically you fly your crew out into the center of the map and roll for each asteroid as you go. When you get the right (Terribly Wrong) number: the enemy pounces setting up at range three right behind you (in the 5 to 7 area of a clock-face) !!!

In their first activation (Ambush) the sneakies are all considered PS 9... have fun!

:o    :D

sweet topic joe, I havent had the oppourtinity to play a whole lot of movie scene games however, i have been re reading the Xwing comics on Marvel Unlimited and have been brain storming ideas how to recreate battles and missions from those comix..ive been trying to include all the pilots from that series so a little homebrew is in the works too...

I know you have a ton of ships, have you ever fielded all of them at the same time in one glorious JBR7 thunderdome?

Sounds like Hellah-FUN Brah. My ships have all been played, and I sure have put as many as fifty on the table.

Glory... all weekend long Baby!
