This clan seems really interesting; would you mind terribly if I did my own take on the bushi school and added it to my own setting?

If LucaCherstich agree I should perhaps include your idea as an other school or alternative paths once the work would be complete. Please see with him.

Do as you please!

It would be nice if you quote me...but this is a public forum, so I guess anybody can take (and modify) what he pleases.

I must say that my own mechanics are overly tied to the kind of Hedgehog my minor clan is.

They should be not adapt to act as alternate path to the other hedgehog (which I dislike...)...but as I said, do you you please.

Here is my take on the Hedgehog's bushi school. I wanted to clean up a few bits I thought were messy, or too similar to the Boar Clan. I hope you like it. It's free for anyone to use. I'm still thinking of a way to incorporate them into my own setting, likely during the War of Spirits.

Hironoda Spearman

The warriors of the Hedgehog Clan are unabashedly on spear tactics, utilizing the strengths of the weapon's reach and defensive virtues to their fullest. While the Hironoda's focus on anti-cavalry and spear-wall tactics, leaves them largely immobile on the battlefield, those foolish enough to try and get close soon learn just how dangerous a Hironoda spearman can be.

Hironoda SpearmanSchool (Bushi)

Benefit: +1 Reflexes

Skills: Athletics, Battle, Defense, Hunting, Kenjutsu, Spears (Yari), any one Skill

Honor: 5.5

Outfit: Light Armor or Heavy, Travelling Pack, Yari, Daisho, Sturdy Clothing, 3 koku

Techniques

Rank 1: Spines of the Hedgehog

The Hironoda train almost exclusively with spears, their skill rivaled by none in the Empire. You can ready a Spear as a Free Action. You gain +1k0 on Damage rolls with Spears, or +1k1 when attacking Mounted targets.

Rank 2: The Hedgehog Does Not Move

The Hironoda have long learned to use every virtue of the spear, especially its superior reach. When hunkered down with a spear ready, a Hronoda bushi becomes a daunting foe. As long have not moved more than 5' from where you started your last Turn, you gain a Free Raise on all Attacks made with Spears. Also, if an opponent attempts a non-reach Melee Attack against you, they must call an additional Raise to no effect.

Rank 3: Spines Push Back

Speed and mobility are hardly necessary for a Hironoda Bushi, as their foes seem all too eager to impale themselves on the Hironoda's waiting spear. If a foe moved 10' or more to attack you on this or last Turn and you have not moved more than 5' since the start of last Turn, you may take a Full Round Action to attack that enemy. If you're successful, in addition to dealing damage, you make an Opposed Strength Check against the opponent, gaining a Free Raise if your attack was made with a Spear. If you succeed, the target is knocked off his feet as per the Knockdown Maneuver. This Technique can't be used against horses, but it can be used against their riders, knocking them from the saddle.

Rank 4: A Thousand Spines

A true Hironoda Bushi learns all aspects of their favorite weapon: strength, versatility, reach, and speed. You may make attacks as Simple Actions with Spears and Samurai Weapons.

Rank 5: Fury of the Hedgehog

The spear-walls of the Hironoda are feared by cavalry and infantry alike, for they have learned the Hedgehog's warriors fight as one, taking down even the most powerful opponents with a flurry of stabs. After an ally attacks an enemy in range, you may spend a Void Point to attack the same target. If you and the Ally both use Spears, you gain +0k2 to your Damage Roll.

i see some good ideas and alternative takes, especially since you seem to highlight lack of mobility more than I did. Thank you, when I'll get time maybe I'll adapt something for my use.

By the way, feel that even Your R2 and R3 are still a bit messy, but that's the problem with a System which lacks proper Reach rules. When you want to homebrew reach-focused techniques you must always work on ad-hoc rules.

Actually, Reach weapons are a thing in 4th Edition rules, as is weapon size (Large, Medium, Small). They're keywords you can find in the weapon descriptions. Reach allows you to attack nonadjacent targets, up to 5' away I think.

But those keywords usually have special effects only when combined with specific techniques while we still lack a more general reach system.

"Reach" is mentioned but in terms of mechanics reach weapons miss many things which one expect from other games like:

- they do not threaten areas and therefore they give Attacks of Opportunity a la 3rd ed. D20 vs People trying to approach.

- they have no mechanical effect regarding having\not having guard (e.g. Conan 2d20).

And the same is true from a reverse point of view (Small weapons which should allowed to be used in grapple too).

I add your work into the Court of Minor Clans.

Please, could I have a description of what should be the purpose of the Hedgehog Clan about the year 3000 of the Isawa Calender?

In this way I should also include it on the Empire of Emerald Stars Companion Fan Book. :P

oh...I really do not Know...I never cared about Rokugan in Space! I really did not even Read that chapter in IH2 because it's just against everything which makes L5R fascinating to me.

But you can come up with whatever you want!
