Soon to be no more :(

By RoK 98, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I have some good news and some bad news. First the bad news:

RoK 98 will soon be disappearing from the forums. Unfortunately I was doing research on Wookieepedia and a window of questionable origin tried to load up but I cancelled it straight away. Next thing I know my browser goes haywire and I get a warning that viruses have been detected. This resulted in the loss of my entire Google+ profile, meaning I'm here with no email and nothing to help me sign in should I forget my password. I'm going to try and keep my profile here, by just changing email address, but if not I will be gone. Never more to be RoK 98.

Good news is I've a new tablet inbound and will setup a new email and Google+ profile. If I cannot continue as RoK 98 here, I'll comment on this thread with my new me.

I don't think Wookieepedia is directly at fault. Unfortunately they have a lot of advertisements on their site and likely one got pressed by mistake. It's happened before when I've clicked on a link before the page is fully loaded, only to find the page move down (as images and adverts pop up) and something else loads up.

But be cautious anyway.

Will still be around the next few days.

Sorry for the misfortune. Possibly using ADBlock could help preserving your profiles in the future?

You didn't even have to click on something. Our IT guy said there's something he calls a "drive bye infection". By letting your cursor hover over an infected add you can become infected. He then went on to explain how this worked never realizing my eyes glazed over. Don't ask because I simply don't know. I do know it caused a LOT of damage to my software but fortunately not to the server.

Thanks for the warning. Hope things work out for you.

Will your new name be RoK 99? :)

These aren't your normal "pop-up" ads. On some sites when your cursor moves over an ad it increases in size or gives additional info. That's all it takes. Like I said I don't understand the "how" of it just that it can happen.

This is scary.

That makes me feel a little less stupid. I'd been so careful.

Google did what it could. Even volunteered The Cloud to backup what it could. But a lot of damage had already been done.

But yes I agree, I should of had a flash drive! Always good to keep important things saved externally for just in case.

Don't feel stupid. This happened to me at work. Looking for high pressure expansion tanks and not skimming porn sites. I had no idea this could happen either and was freaking out! Whatever infected the machine couldn't be removed. New hard drive and a complete re-install of all software. Not a good day at work.

Good idea. I have two external HD's (named Alpharius & Omegon) but I'm a bit paranoid like that. ;)

Rok Of Ages and Rok strikes back sound cool.

Or you could go with Rok98_2.0_Electric_Boogaloo. Then again maybe better not :)

Yeah you're not expecting anything like that on a boring normal site like that.

I heard a lot of religious sites have viruses aswell.

Ugh Pretty soon the pirate sites will be the only "safe" ones out there ;)

I think RoK of Ages is going to be my new profile.

I shall now begin.

This is RoK 98 signing off.........

Interesting tidbit for ya, religious websites are more prone to cyberattack than porn because the people running religious sites are often not tech-savvy, while porn sites wanna keep you clean (hehe) so you keep coming back there

I actually wasn't referring to a backup-drive. I'm majoring in cybersecurity in college, so I have a bit of fun messing with this sorta thing in virtual machines. Deliberately infect something, try to disinfect it.

Having a sort of vaccine-drive, which basically is just full of tools that disinfect computers, is a good habit. Obviously, backing up important stuff is too, but that's time consuming and most people put that off and don't think about it until it's too late. I've got one flash for backups, one for anti-malware tools (malwarebytes is your friend!), one with things like pwdump and JohnTheRipper (password-stealing tools), and a boot drive for Kali Linux,

I really want some of those drives that look like keys, so I can put all these things on a keyring...I keep losing them in my room...

But yeah! Flash drives are great! Woo!
