Having Trouble Incorperaring Flotillas

By Tirion, in Star Wars: Armada

So these things are awesome, don't get me wrong. They are going to be an amazing change to the game. I am however having a tough time finding their place in fleet building. I don't know where to take their points from ships or squadrons. Currently I seem to be taking less upgrades and slightly less squadrons (I'm a squadron heavy player most of the time). How have you guys been building with them?

I am looking at using them to replace MKII B's as carriers. I can get two of them with a lot of useful upgrades for less than the MKII, and together they can actually move more squadrons, and have the benefit of being two activations/angles of attack instead of one.

Here is one idea I have.
1 • Assault Frigate Mark II A - Advanced Projectors - Turbolaser Reroute Circuits - Paragon (99)
2 • Nebulon-B Support Refit - Intel Officer - Turbolaser Reroute Circuits - Salvation (72)
3 • GR-75 Medium Transports - General Dodonna - Bomber Command Center - Expanded Hangar Bay - Bright Hope (53)
4 • GR-75 Medium Transports - Raymus Antilles - Jamming Field - Expanded Hangar Bay - Quantum Storm (33)
5 • Jan Ors Moldy Crow (19)
6 • X-wing Squadron (13)
7 • X-wing Squadron (13)
8 • X-wing Squadron (13)
9 • X-wing Squadron (13)
10 • Scurrg H-6 Bomber (16)
11 • Scurrg H-6 Bomber (16)
12 • Scurrg H-6 Bomber (16)
13 • HWK-290 (12)

Paragon and Salvation are pretty regular bruisers, and then the Medium Transports are dedicated squadron. Jan an 4 X-wings get covered by the Quantum Storm with Jamming Fields. Jamming Fields plus Jan makes for pretty tough X-wings I think. Then Dodonna on The Great White Hope brings the Scurrgs to flank. They either split their force and take bombing runs and don't do much to stop either, or they jam up one and let the other through. Either way you get a some bombing in.

Great? Who knows, but that is one way I have thought of using them.

I guess it really depends on what you expect them to do. For me they are incredible pocket carriers. The Gozanti with Wulff and Expanded hangers is a 35 point carrier that can activate 4 squadrons...nuts. I also suspect that we might see a resurgence of Tarkin with these.

When I take them, it'll be as carriers for a squadron heavy fleet. At the moment, because the carrier options aren't great, my list is built around strong capital ships with a small fighter screen. So essentially, it'll be build a list around flotillas, rather than trying to fit them into a fleet with an entirely different setup.

Doubt that helps! Just my thoughts. :)

After tinkering I think I'm going to be using mine as electronic warfare, mostly. That and I am experimenting with Quantum Storm as a Commander chariot.

I agree...they will be sick EW ships. It will make the opponent make hard decisions about trying to take them out especially with that **** scatter.

I often find myself dropping in the odd CR90 filler in rebel lists. Now, instead, I can fill that space with a GR-75 and two X-wings. Will I do that every time? No, it'll probably depend on whether I need more squadron cover, more ship punch, more activations, synergy with the rest of the list, etc. But it's an option now.

I think it will largely--though not entirely--replace the AF2 as my primary carrier for vanilla squadrons. The AF2 is still our only effective Flight Controllers platform, which is a pretty big deal, but on the other hand the GR-75 has BCC. The value of activating large numbers of squadrons all at once can't be dismissed, either: the third, fourth, or fifth activation can easily be the difference between taking out Rhymer or not before the ball can rip into you.

I haven't gotten around to trying them out yet, but I think the Slicer Tools are going to be a staple, too. Probably worth the 25 or so points spent just to get those.

Like everything, it's going to depend on what you're trying to do. If you're looking to go squadron centric, then the points are probably coming out of your ship allocation as you try to maximize squadrons and buffs to squadrons. On the other hand, slicer tools in a ship oriented fleet have a good chance of disrupting evenmy squadron commands, so the points could potentially come out of your squadrons.

in an mc80 list who would be your go to commander with these things. Dodonna? garm? I'm sure most will say rieekan

An MC80 list for me is a double pickle... So still probably Garm, even though I'd have 2-3 flotillas to support them, its still more important for me to support those two Pickles with a full load of Tokens.

dras you have inspired me to try double pickle again

The thing I usually struggle with in my fleets and flying style is how to keep my admiral safe.

and then came along Bright Hope, the rest I (brightly) hope will be history.

Other than that the choice of whether to take them will likely come down to if I want slicer tools, jamming field, BCC etc. I dont think they should be taken without an upgrade as then they cannot multitask. I like flexibility.

it is crazy to me how quick these get so expensive... Relatively

I havent found a home for any flotillas and Ive build countless fleets with them. Im underwhelmed with the Fleet Support cards. I feel they should be much stronger since they can only be used on flotillas and there should have been many more of them in this wave.

Including them has reduced my firepower by far more than Im willimg to comprlmise. Im hoping someone proves their value to me, but right now ill only be including them in casual games. Im sad.

My prediction: average deployments will go up by one two, activations by one, and fighter numbers by two.

So I've just managed to make a squadron heavy list with a Gozanti as a pocket carrier that supports the bombers. Was surprisingly difficult!

Could really do with the limit being pushed up to 450 points...

this is my problem exactly! I feel like getting two of these in a fleet is harder than it should be.

The best list I've built with GR-75's so far uses [GR-75+2x X-wings] as drop-in replacements for the CR90's in a 30-30-90-90-90-90 MSU.

I don't think they work in every build--which is emphatically a very good thing, because I'm not too keen on anything being an auto-include.

I think that was my problem I had a must include mentality

My biggest problem is that I think you need two Gozanti but have yet to find a mix of other ships that I think will work with them. And when you start trying to build a fleet around your light support units something has gone horribly wrong. :(

I do think that there will be diminishing returns with the flotillas. Many fleets will see none or one. Some will have two. And at the beginning folks are going to go crazy with "flotilla-hunters" (Ships with H-9s, etc.)

I've currently been very happy plugging one or two flotillas and replacing a one large ship. This allows for squadron and upgrade buffs.

I think with three flotillas and up there will be a lack of punch felt for sure. Putting 70+ points into three ships that can die VERY easily can be dangerous. Also, it cuts into your other capital ship plans.

(That being said I actually really like the stuff they will do to the meta-game. Being able to mess with people with splicer tools is going to be very interesting. Also being able to control squads with ease will give a tremendous boot to non-rogue squadrons. I think fleets will become much more specialized.

I also don't believe flotillas are "must include". I think a well thought out and practiced fleet will still be the most important part of winning.)

yeah I was doing that, starting with the gr 75s then going from there.... Bad move grasshopper

What are peoples thought on having bright hope be the ship your commander is on. I am trying to make a general cracken build and i'm iffy if he that would be a good place to have him

We need more points!

Let's petition FFG for 450 :D

Tirion, I love you, but that title man...its giving me Grammatical Cancer. Sorry for the goose step 0/

Hehehehe.
