Sarone EotE Campaign into Hutt Space Recruitment Thread

By Sarone, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

However, I've decided the correct answer is: one who lost them in a bet. Haha

Final, final, version of sheet up. Changed to a Chiss as I am playing quite a few mandos in face to face games.(i.e. 2) and another in F&D PbP.

Hmmmmm I was left with like 450. I wanted to spend more but didn't have enough credits to get another gun ....... :(

I've started compiling a want list at the bottom of my sheet of things I can't afford currently.

Though I'm torn on which NPC I wanted to work with .... I mean they all seem promising.

DEADLINE HAS PASSED AND NO MORE APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Thank you everyone for submitting characters I will let you know my decisions in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Until then, good luck and Godspeed.

The air was hot. Dead. Smothering.

Sweat soaked her neck and back, saturating the synthetic fabric of her form-fitting bodysuit which then prickled everywhere it touched her skin.

Sheed carefully shifted around in something approximating a sitting position, with her feet wedged against the outside of the turbolift shaft and her back against the durasteel beam behind her in the maintenance shaft of the north tower of the Czerka regional office here on Teth. The maintenance shaft was a passage for droids and the occasional tech when something malfunctioned...not intended for extended strenuous activity like the chimneying Sheed had been doing for the last hour.

It wasn’t so much the strain that had her upset, though, so much as that hour. In her planning, she’d accounted for exactly forty two minutes to complete this ascent, and here, an hour after she had carefully timed the security patrols, followed the cleaning droid on its circuit, forced the hatch into the shaft, slipped inside, dangling from the hatch frame over several hundred meters of hot, stale air, and carefully replaced the hatch (quietly and one-handed, mind you)...she was still two full floors from her target: a ventilation fan frame that gave her roof access in an area not covered by a holocam.

But the durasteel beam had been painted, as opposed to the fire-retardant (and conveniently textured) coating that had been specced out in the structural diagrams of this building that she’d studied several weeks ago, making it a considerably more slippery surface than she’d anticipated having to negotiate.

Had I known...she grumbled inside her head...I’d have brought better climbing equipment...or a repulsor pack, or hotwired the lift, or dropped a rope on my way in, or…

Suddenly, though, a rumble...felt as much as heard, slowly grew in volume and intensity. Sheed tensed: the approaching hovertrain was to have been her exit strategy. Several tracks crisscrossed at various levels of all four sides of the massive skyscraper, but this particular train, on it’s tethered repulsor track, was set to cruise by less than 10 meters below her target roof, with open topped cars full of grain. It was a long enough train with long enough cars that she gave herself at least a two minute window in which, assuming she was on the roof, she could leap down...extensive simulation given various weather, train speed, and jump location variables helped her determine exactly when to jump...but all of that prep was meaningless now, as the train thundered by just outside.

Still, it was cover noise, which meant she could resume climbing (she’d held off when no trains were passing, as her soft climbing booties were still noticeably loud on the outer cowling of the turbolift), so she flexed her cramping hamstrings and pushed herself upward…

Ten minutes later, and Sheed had ascended to her original destination. Like the hatch she’d entered through, this one was also a screw-in design, from the outside naturally, and required her to leave the comparatively stable chimney position to swing around the beam and dangle with one-hand...this time over several hundred meters above solid ground, plus the distance she’d ascended...while she used a tiny tool from her “box of tricks” to remove the screws from the fan grating from the inside. Moments later, the lithe young twi’lek pulled herself through the small vent hatch, and for the first time in what seemed like ages, she stood on a flat surface.

Her muscles throbbed in protest as she allowed herself the minor luxury of a long stretch and deep breaths of the fresh night air. While she was enormously grateful to be out of that shaft, a new problem faced her...namely the lack of a plan. Sure, she’d made backup plans, but those plans had all been designed to be implemented at an earlier stage in the game than that at which she currently found herself.

There wasn’t much on this small terrace roof: a few vents, a small shed-like access to the room below, a few accent and safety lighting fixtures...and along the far end of the roof ledge, a series of tether cables, supporting an overhead set of repulsor train guide tracks as they curved around the building, roughly ten meters up.

The tethers themselves were always an aspect of the hovertrain system that Sheed had found rather beautiful, in a functional sort of way: slightly elastic cables with spring-loaded anchors at each end extended up over the guards that surrounded the track along every bend, and were secured to the various buildings the tracks curved about through the city. Sort of a reverse hammock in general appearance.

She didn’t have time to admire the view now, though...she had an escape to improvise. She hadn’t bothered to learn the train schedule beyond the time that her escape train was to arrive, so , while she theoretically could just wait for the next one, there was no telling when that would be...and if her handiwork down below was discovered, Imperial response time on Teth was surprisingly good. With no aerial cover on this roof, she’d be found in no time, and with Czerka signing that sole buyer contract with the Empire, the imps weren’t likely to go lightly on anyone found on a random inaccessible roof of their regional headquarters in the middle of the night.

To say nothing of what they’d think if they found the datacards I lifted! Sheed thought, grinning slightly in spite of her predicament, and glorying in the chill that the cool night breeze sent down her spine.

Finally, she reasoned that the best course of action would be to get back into the building access door, to keep out of sight, and to wait for the next train to come by on her chosen track. Stepping quietly over to the door, she reached out to palm the door panel…

...only to feel an icy wave of fear wash over her as the door started sliding away on its own.

In that split second, everything seemed to move in slow motion. The door panel hissed out of the way, and Sheed looked up as a gray uniformed ISB agent on the opposite side of the door did the same. For an instant that seemed to last forever, hunter and hunted stared at one another wide-eyed, two brains trying to translate the new information into a course of action.

Finally, time caught up to itself. The agent chose procedure, reaching for his comlink, and getting out a quick, but clear, “Got her!” Sheed chose unpredictability, and managed to wrench the agent’s blaster from his holster before he could drop his comlink.

Unfortunately for the twi’lek, though, while the agent couldn’t prevent her seizing his weapon, he was fast enough to prevent a clean lift. He seized her wrist painfully firmly in a lock, then backhanded her with his other hand. Still, she refuse to yield on the blaster, and while she was still reeling from the blow, adrenaline kept her moving and thinking. She quickly yanked her box of intrusion tools from her belt, and using it as a crude bludgeon, she brought it down hard on the fist that was holding her wrist fast at the agent’s waist.

The agent took another swing at Sheed’s head, but this time she was ready, dodging, and using the forward momentum he’d generated in the blow to shift both of them a half step back toward the roof. When he came around for a third swing, she spun away as best she could, using her pinned wrist as a fulcrum to pivot about, and slapped the door control , which sent it out rapidly, smacking the now perfectly positioned agent in the shoulder. While it was by no means a crushing blow, it was enough to knock him off-balance, and that was all the opening Sheed needed to give her pinned hand a mighty yank...which was finally successful in wrenching the blaster free. After an instinctive couple of steps back, she levelled the blaster at the agent. Blast it, where’s a train when you need it?!

“Oh come on”, the agent reasoned, “Give it up. You’ve nowhere to run. Back-up is on its way...they’ll be here in moments. My superiors will be much more likely to go easier on you for a simple trespass charge compared to attacking someone like me and stealing a weapon. Use good judgment.”

Sheed said nothing, but slowly backed up, toward the row of spring anchors for the hovertrain tethers. This is going to be a close thing… she thought.

Interpreting her retreat as vulnerability, the ISB man confidently stepped toward her. In response, she raised the blaster at him, slowing his approach once more.

“It makes no difference to me”, he continued, hands raised in a placating gesture, “my backup will be here in moments. You may take out me, maybe even two or three of us...but the whole squad?”

Just keep talking...Sheed thought as she backed up to the piling of a tether cable.

“There. You’re quite literally at the end of your options. It’s over.”, the agent advised, “Just drop the weapon, and don’t make this any harder than it has to be. We’ll take you in, ask some questions, and send you off in the morning.”

Send me off? To a COMPNOR “reeducation center” most likely… Sheed thought with disgust.

As she edged up along the piling, Sheed noticed the turbolift rising through the shaft she’d ascended an eternity ago...apparently the ISB man hadn’t been bluffing about his backup. The lift stopped, and in a few moments, the lone agent was bracketed by 5 others, each with their blasters (all copies of the one she held) trained on her.

And just when it seemed like this would go down as one of her lousiest botched jobs, Sheed heard the best sound she’d heard in her life...the deep rumble of an approaching hovertrain.

As she carefully kept her blaster up, she frantically searched for the approach of the train, either on the tracks above her with the tethers, or the one below that she’d originally planned her escape for.

Waiting...waiting...and at last, there it was! On the high track, headed north out of town!

Welp...if it doesn’t work, I’ll have at least gone out flashy...Sheed grimaced.

The agents crept closer...another step and they’d be within arms reach. She made her best attempt to shrink back…

And finally, as it did at the door, things seemed to happen slowly, but all at once: the train roared around from the side of the building, her foot stepped back for a few inches of roof that weren’t there, and the agents finally decided to make their move.

Fortunately for the twi’lek, they were just a moment behind. The train got to the bend, and Sheed clenched the nearest tether cable firmly. She then pointed the blaster right at the spring tensioner and let a shot go, which not only got the imperial agents to hit the dirt, but also blasted straight through the big spring, releasing its tension.

The tension on the spring on the other side of the tether, however, had not been destroyed, and as such, when the counter-tension was blasted, it pulled the whole tether cable toward it...and as Sheed had hoped, it carried her right with it. Up the line to the top of the track and headed for the other side. As it pulled her to the top of the track, Sheed simply let go, and as the tether snaked to the opposite side, the twi’lek landed softly in a grain car...with a friendly wave to her stymied would-be captors, she dropped to her knees, then flopped over onto her back: she was headed home.

Who's got a PM so far? I have and I'll be playing an alternate.

Will the Alternates get the same amount of XP and Credits as the normal players?

First Off, let me define the difference between Primary and Alternate for this campaign.

For both, players are encouraged to post in the campaign and will be present for most scenes. Actions, conversations, and scenes where both types are present will be reviewed and interacted with together. In essence, think of Primary characters as the main characters while the Alternates are the supporting characters. That being said, if a primary player wishes to take a break for an episode, they can go into the Alternate pool. At that time, an Alternate can be promoted to Primary for the episode.

Primary Characters: Are the main focus for the campaign. They will get full Experience and Credits, as well as full Obligation reductions and increases. Their actions will be the deciding factor for the campaign.

Alternate Characters: Will be supporting the Primary Players. They will have the most interaction with the Benefactor, serving as guards, liaisons, experts, and so on. In essence, their main job will be on hand should "Important" information have to be presented to the Primary players. Or act as a sort of cavalry should it be necessary. Will get a percentage of Experience, Credits, and Obligation that Primary Players receive.

For the Alternate Roles

I have decided to go with

JalekZem with Sting Wango: Rodian Hired Gun - Enforcer

-and-

GMRen with " Jasen " (Sorry, but you didn't have the name and link)

For Primary Characters, In addition ColonelCommisar, Kymrel, and Tear44

hydrospanner with Sheed ( http://swsheets.com/c/racqfnecc-sheed )

TheErthafein with Edad.

sonovabith with Tion's

I'll set up the OOC between now and Saturday as well as work with various players on any final tweaks with Characters, backstories, and mechanics.

Good luck and Godspeed to all selected and Good luck, good fortunes, and Godspeed to those who have not been selected.

I look forward to gaming with you all!

Sarone, I'll continue to pore over the gear in the various books for my starting creds...figure on more intrusions/security gear.

Looking forward to this. Having never done this before, I'm excited to get my feet wet.

BTW, anyone have some suggested reading for me to better prepare me for a PbP game?

Awww :(

I look forward to gaming with you all!

Sarone, I'll continue to pore over the gear in the various books for my starting creds...figure on more intrusions/security gear.

Just be mindful of the rules for gear as well as the credit limit and rarity.

Looking forward to this. Having never done this before, I'm excited to get my feet wet.

BTW, anyone have some suggested reading for me to better prepare me for a PbP game?

I would recommend you check out the PBP here on the forums in EotE and Age of Rebellion.

That being said, it comes down to writing a post and then interacting with the rest of the party and GM.

Awww :(

If you want to, send me a pm and I'll go over the character with you, if that's alright.

Aww...

Man, I guess I should have made a female, Twi'lek, smuggler. :/

BTW, anyone have some suggested reading for me to better prepare me for a PbP game?

If I might blow my own trumpet, Edge of Darkness, the AoR PbP I'm running on here, works rather well and has had decent reviews (including from PCs in this game).

Congrats on the players picked, looking forward to gaming with you. To the ones that didn't get into the game, better luck next time :)

Honestly, PbP isn't terribly different than writing short story fiction, with the caveats of both limiting the scope of your control of the setting to your character...and not having the advantage of knowing the future in the setting as you write.

For short, but descriptive and engaging Star Wars writing, check out any of the short stories in any of the RPG books...from the (long by PbP standards) narratives at the beginnings of most FFG books, to (especially) the ongoing stories across many of the old WEG books.

Aside from that, nearly any fiction reading will help you become familiar with writing that flows, as opposed to short, blocky statements. Ideally, you want to write PbP as if the whole group is working together to make a story or novel to be read by others...so more description, internal thoughts, etc. and less like an affidavit to be used in court, strictly limited to "just the facts ma'am". FFG's system really lends itself to that aspect of PbP (even if, imvho, it is weak system wise for PbP due to the abstract scaling).

It's very much built in a way that encourages you to say, as a player, "Bob pauses for a moment behind the shipping crate, mentally steeling himself, before darting toward the blast door. As he gets close, he makes a running leap, twisting in mid-air to fire off a few hastily aimed shots in the general direction of the stormtroopers, hoping to keep their heads down." As opposed to the more mundane, "Bob takes his move phase to travel 6 meters toward the door. He will use his tactical phase to use a cover fire action over this area." Simply put, with many systems, you use the rules to decide what to do and your post to describe those game rules in text form...with the FFG system, you get to do it the other way: you decide what you want to do, then sort of "drape the rules over top".

GMRen with " Jasen " (Sorry, but you didn't have the name and link)

It's fine, I'm changing back.

So basically R2 and Chewie?

R2, 3PO, Chewie, Lando, BB-8, the Naboo guard captain in Ep 1, Mace Windu, Yoda, et al

BTW, anyone have some suggested reading for me to better prepare me for a PbP game?

If I might blow my own trumpet, Edge of Darkness, the AoR PbP I'm running on here, works rather well and has had decent reviews (including from PCs in this game).

Don't forget about The Shadow's Mark. Over on the F&D forums.

Thank you for selecting Tion and I look forward to a great game with you bunch of miscreants.
