Sarone EotE Campaign into Hutt Space Recruitment Thread

By Sarone, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Greetings everyone,

I am currently looking into running a PBP campaign set shortly after Episode 4 in Hutt Space. The rules will mostly be from EotE, but AoR and FaD will be allowed. However, emphasis will be on EotE in regards what story mechanics will be used (Force users will still need the Morality mechanic to measure Light side/Dark side influence).

Currently, I have three players already involved and willing to play. I am looking for at least three more primary characters as well up to two alternates. Posting will be set to at least twice a week (Wednesday/Saturday Eastern Standard Time). I am looking to go for about a month/two between dispensing XP and credits.

Story wise:

The players have been brought in by a benefactor to serve their needs in Hutts Space, more specifically Nar Shaddaa and Nal Hutta. Their jobs will be in support of the benefactor's goals, and will be judged by how effective the group was in their operations.

Initially, the crew will be given a base of operations using the AoR/Far Horizons rule sets.

System: Edge of the Empire, with rules from Age of Rebellion and Force and Destiny

PBP Location: Edge of the Empire Board on the FFG forums
Player Count: 1-3 Primary Player (in addition to the reserved three), plus up to 2 Alternates/Support
Style of Play: Long term kind of game. The more the players are involved, the better the group will become.
Allowed Content: Most, if not all OFFICIAL FFG books, will be in play.

Character Creation: http://swsheets.com/

Dice Roller: http://orokos.com/roll/

Backstory: A minimum of a paragraph is required. That being said, don't go extreme saying that the character survived Order 66. by fighting off Vader and leading a Rebel fleet to victory.
Other Notes:

  • 0-1 Hutts may be used, but should be within reason. Players with a good submission for a Hutt may submit an alternate character.
  • There will be a choice between the three benefactors and will be voted on between the players in the group. The benefactors are:
    • Reom: Male Twi'lek and CEO of Isotech, a black market cybernetics business. Is in talks with the Hutts for access to their technology.

    • Bargos the Hutt: Male Hutt and middling crime boss on Nal Hutta. Seeks resources and wealth to help fund his own criminal empire.

    • Shoola the Hutt: Female Hutt and station master of Port Tooga. With the rebel victory at Yavin, she is seeking to expand her influence in the kjadic politics.

  • Both generalists and specialists will be looked at. That being said, characters that can fulfill both combat, support, and social roles will may have a better chance at being included. Likewise, specialist characters will be based on how useful they are in their chosen field.

  • Pilot (Space) will not have extensive use initially. Pilot (Planetary) will be more useful.

  • It is recommended that beginning experience should be used on Abilities first before spending on skills and talents.

  • Because the team will not have their own ship initially, the rules for a base will be used.

    • Each Player starts with another 1000 credits (grand total is 1,500 for intial gear).

    • Base will be discussed later and dependent on benefactor.

  • All characters will have some form of Obligation. This will be triggered more by plot than by roll. However, it will be used more as a gauge of how the group is performing.

  • Characters using non-EotE careers will be subject to the following restrictions:

    • Age of Rebellion: While AoR careers and specializations are allowed, the Duty mechanic will not be used too often unless the player/group actively tries to increase their score. However, special care will need to be taken, as overt acts of support for the Rebellion will have in game consequences.

    • Force and Destiny: All FaD careers and specializations are available, but character creation will not be based on knight level play (no lightsabers). FaD players, as well as those seeking to use the Force down the line, should keep tabs on their own Morality as it will not be combined with others.

House Rule/GM Rule

  • There will be an Enemy Mechanic that I am using to keep track of various enemies.

  • In addition, there will be an Imperial Perception on the group, separate from the story and is based on a reverse Duty Score. This is set at 5 times the number of AoR characters plus 10 times the number of FaD.

Please post any questions/comments/concerns on here.

FAQ:

Character Backgrounds:

  • Character backgrounds will be considered when going over character applications. In addition, where applicable, I may ask to include a few of the campaign NPCs as well.

From Kymrel: Question: What will our starting obligation be, and can we take on some more for additional XP and/or credits?

  • Obligations will be at ten (10) with an additional ten (10) available for experience and credits (I recommend the experience over the credits). While this might be a break in the normal rules in regards with Obligation, I don't foresee it being a major problem in the long run. I intend for the group to work quickly to get their Obligation lowered relatively quickly.
  • In addition, if a character has access to either Duty or Morality, that can also be the source for extra credits and/or experience. However, only one source may be used as such.

Addendums:

There are quite a few good submissions, but there is both a lack of diversity as well as too many being from Hutt Space. I would encourage future submitters to take those two into consideration.

Hey Sarone

Thanks for inviting me to play in your game (for the rest of you, I'm one of the three players already signed on). I would be interested in playing a Sentinel - Artisan (F&D core). He would function as a primary Slicer and Mechanic, a decent Medic and Sneaker, and would have some ranged combat ability. The character is a Klatooinian former slave of a Hutt.

He would not be a jedi-wannabie, but rather someone who has had something "special" for a long time, but does not make any connection between his thing and that weird order of robed Jedi from the past. Initially he would only have the Sense power, representing how he can "see" the Force and "feel" his machines as he repairs or modifies them.

The character is almost ready for submission, just a few tweaks needed.

Question: What will our starting obligation be, and can we take on some more for additional XP and/or credits?

Edited by Kymrel

As one of the reserved players, I'm just going to lay my towel out on the metaphorical sun lounger now:

Lynna Sellua - Twi'lek Smuggler/Gunslinger

Lynna Sellua was born on Ryloth, the daughter of high-ranking noble Alaric Sellua. Pampered and privileged, educated in the arts of courtship, seduction, and every other expectation of a Twi'lek princess, hers was a charmed life. When she turned 21, her father told her that he had lined her up a very nice - and substantially wealthy - husband. Instead however, he was shocked when she instead told him her intention to go off-world and travel the stars. She wanted to live a life of adventure for a few years, travelling the galaxy and gaining a greater understanding of the nature of the universe. The two fought for a long while over this, before ultimately Alaric gave in and permitted her to leave the homeworld. However the condition was that unless she had settled herself down after two years she must return to the homeworld to meet her betrothed and be married. Though she still wears her ritual betrothal armlet as a token for her father's wishes, it has been nearly two years and she has no intention of returning home any time soon.

Obligation: (Value) - Marriage Promise

Motivation: Discovery - Lynna is driven to discover what lies elsewhere in the universe, and to make use of the freedom so rarely granted to women of her kind.

I can fly (which retrospectively may be less useful, but it's there), shoot and even face in extremis. I'd vote for Bargos the Hutt as our benefactor.

I'd like to apply as a Bounty Hunter/Assassin named Raxos Ravnos

http://swsheets.com/c/iangjyhg9-raxos-ravnos--t

Raxos Ravnos is a member of a family of bounty hunters called the Ravnos Clan, known for tracking down the worst criminals, but everyone knows they're just as bad as the crooks they take in. Known for their distinctive armour, stylised in the way of the Corellian banshee bird, the members of the Ravnos Clan often name themselves after birds. Raxos "The Bloodhawk" is a hotheaded bounty hunter, recently fully recognised by his family and after success in a few minor jobs, is looking for his claim to fame in Hutt Space. He wishes to be as famous, if not more, than his father, Fivos Ravnos, often comparing his actions to those of his father.

Obligation (20): Family - Raxos has deep ties to his family tradition of bounty hunting, and compares himself to his father Fivos.

Motivation: Fame - Raxos is driven to be the most famous member of the Ravnos Clan, like his father Fivos.

He has quite a bit of skill in Ranged (Heavy), as well as some Piloting (Planetary).

As for the benefactor, I'd say Bargos or Shoola.

Torn between a failed Squad Commander in service to the Underworld and a Smooth Operator type face.

**** it is early. :P

The failed Squad Commander gives you lots of options, but we already have a Bounty Hunter who'll likely want to take point in combat. The Smooth Operator could be useful, especially since you have two ways of doing it depending on what direction the party goes in (if we're good guys, the heart of gold charmer; if we're not, the evil manipulative bosh'tet) especially since I've got some Charm and Presence to play around with so we can play good space cop, bad space cop.

I've just created a former dirty planetary security official Bothan Marshal for a one-shot a friend is hosting. It's a fun spec, a talker with some combat ability. Dirty Harry with a blaster would complement a charming Twi'lek pretty nicely. What's not to like?

Question is, what kind of lucky do you feel?

Interested.

What will our starting obligation be, and can we take on some more for additional XP and/or credits? Mostly interested in exp.

And Nikto arn't on swsheets can we still play them?

How would you feel about Tion Nova, human Gambler?

He grew up as a slave to Jeth Achoa, a wealthy Arkanian who is addicted to being an addict. Drugs, gambling, doesn't matter. If it is available Achoa wants it all. Nova learned his way around games of chance from watching Achoa, but it didn't take long for the boy to realize Achoa made most of his earnings through cheating. Nova was able to put that knowledge, along with Achoa's incredible arrogance, to good use when he challenged his master to a game of Sabaac with his freedom as the winnings. Achoa agreed, never considering he could possibly lose to a lowly huan slave. With help from an older slave, Gareth, Nova was able to whip up a device to manipulate the cards and earn his freedom. Achoa was quite angry, but kept his word.

However, Tion slipped up and his slicing left a signature in the cards that Achoa discovered about a week after Tion departed. The Arkanian put out a bounty on the human and Nova's been on the run ever since. Regularly dealing with shady characters has sharpened his skills at lying and also means he's also learned his way around blasters - both ends, unfortunately. One day he'd like to take out Achoa and free the other slaves, but until an opportunity arises to do so he makes ends meet through a combination of gambling and low grade cons.

Obligation: Bounty

Motivation: Expertise/Emancipation

If taking additional XP with obligation is possible, I'd do it. Otherwise I just need to make some gear selections, assuming you accept this character.

Question answered in the FAQ.

Considering the backstory, it isn't a flashy and super powered ability, or at least one that is outright noticeable. You might be facing some restrictions in the use of the Force and acquiring additional abilities. However, the payoff should be worth it in the end.

I might use elements of the backstory for the campaign. This is an open reminder to the rest of the party.

Do you have a particular benefactor you wish to support?

As one of the reserved players, I'm just going to lay my towel out on the metaphorical sun lounger now:

It sounds like the character is a member of a clan with some significant influence. One question that immediately comes to my mind is where they fought in the Clone Wars and what was their impact. Though that might be a question left to a later time.

Overall, it's an interesting concept and should pay. In addition, while the Pilot (Space) might not be useful right now, it doesn't mean it won't be used period. I just put that in as a reminder to other players.

<Reserved for character concept>

Torn between a failed Squad Commander in service to the Underworld and a Smooth Operator type face.

**** it is early. :P

It's sounds like you're going for a force-multiplier for the group, kind of like the Leader archetypes from 4th ED D&D. Both can be useful.

It's not set in stone just yet for the other applicants. That being said, overlapping social skills is never a bad idea and being able to shoot in a firefight is just as useful. Especially when certain circles are considered.

Yeah, half looking in that Marshal Build thread ( https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/219599-marshal-build-ideas/) maybe a bent former Sector Ranger. Maybe not bad, but got caught looking the other way too much.

Caffeine still needs to kick in.

Just a reminder from Lore, it wasn't uncommon for corruption in the higher ups and command to cause trouble. It can also be a play on your character asking the right questions to the wrong people. At least, that's my thought.

I'd like to apply as a Bounty Hunter/Assassin named Raxos Ravnos

http://swsheets.com/c/iangjyhg9-raxos-ravnos--t

I would say that your clan might be famous in the Corellian Sector, but not so much in Hutt space. Going through the character, I am quickly having trouble doing the math from Raxos. If you could show how you spent the experience either here or on the character sheet, that would be awesome.

I've just created a former dirty planetary security official Bothan Marshal for a one-shot a friend is hosting. It's a fun spec, a talker with some combat ability. Dirty Harry with a blaster would complement a charming Twi'lek pretty nicely. What's not to like?

It is always good to go for a back up. Besides, what one player flops, another can excel.

Question is, what kind of lucky do you feel?

They shouldn't feel as lucky, especially when a blaster is on the line.

Interested.

Obligation question answered in the second post under FAQ.

I have checked out the character creation and it seems they haven't gotten to Nitko and Sakiyans just yet. If there's an alternate, online site that has the Species then you are allowed to use that.

I'll post this under FAQ once I am done responding.

Interesting concept. I can easily use the Arkanian for the campaign. I do have to ask if there is an example of him in one of the supplements, but it isn't major to the campaign at this time.

One big question is what happened to Gareth? Were there any rivals among the slaves?

I addition, be aware that your character is heading into Hutt space, aka Slave Central.

This sounds interesting! Would a gonk droid turned entertainer be useful? http://swsheets.com/c/nsjekgmeb-aw-d-o

The concept is a gonk droid repurposed as a jukebox, and he learned how to sample phrases from popular songs to communicate beyond the normal GONK GONK vocabulary.

For some reason I am getting Bumblebee from the Michael Bay Transformers.

I'm not sure how I feel about the character. I don't know if it is just the concept, the math or something else, but I am not really sold on it.

Refine it a bit more and I'll take another look.

RESPONSES ARE DONE! Let me know if there are any follow up questions/comments/concerns. Thank you!

Gut instinct is to go for Shoola the Hutt, simply because she's a port master at a place that sounds like a pirate haven. But I could easily go with Bargos the Hutt as well.
The character is ready for inspection. I present: Massan, the overweight, cowardly Klatooinian force-sensitive slicer
EDIT: And now in SPOILERS to hide the wall of text!

Massan_zps0radilum.png
Description:
Massan is a slightly overweight Klatooinian with grey-brown fur and black eyes. His face and jaw are broad and he is missing one of his front teeth from his lower jaw.

He is not particularly tall at 170 cm, but thanks to lack of exercise and a fondness for food and drink now that he is a free being he has amassed some extra weight. Last time he checked he was 89 kg and that was several months ago.

His bulk is further exaggerated when he wears his armor under the dark-brown synth-leather coat. He keeps his pistol out of sight under the left arm, ready to draw if he feels threatened.

Backstory:
Massan was born into slavery, like so many Klatooinians. He was the possession of Dargas the Hutt, a mid-level gangster based on Nar Shaddaa. He showed a talent for working with machines and computers at a young age. This was rather surprising for his parents, litter-mates and owner, since Klatooinians tend to have little inclination to work with complicated gadgets.
The Hutt, never one to waste talent, started using him to repair computers, droids and speeders, and eventually got a slicer to teach Massan how to slice computers. After that the Hutt sent Massan on various missions with his criminals.
One of the people who got to know Massan on such missions was the Klatooinian bounty hunter Roota. Born free and proud of never having been a slave, Roota saw the value in the bright young tech-wizard, and after finishing a difficult hunt for Dargas the Hutt one day he negotiated away his substantial payment and instead got to keep Massan. Later that day he formally gave Massan his freedom.
The two had a partnership and a father-son relationship for almost two years. It ended abruptly when Roota took a risky mission infiltrating a research facility and extraditing a scientist. The pair had little time to plan and went in without the proper research, despite Massan's fears. As it turned out the facility was secretly owned by the Empire, and was staffed by soldiers out of uniform. The pair got caught in a crossfire, Roota got blasted and Massan narrowly escaped with his life. He is now a wanted being by the Empire for his part in the infiltration.
Massan is gadget-crazy, always on the lookout for the next cool thing, always blowing his cash on the latest and greatest versions of stuff he might already have. His very favorite thing to do is to improve some little gadgets, finding ways the designers found either impossible or impractical to make the item function in a manner it was never intended to do.
Motivation:
Morality: 50
Emotional Strength: Caution (minor: Curiosity)
Emotional Weakness: Fear (minor: Obsession)
Massan has always been afraid. When he was young, he was afraid of his stronger littermates. As he grew up he was afraid he would displease his overseers and get punished. Once he figured out he had an unusual talent for machines, and for sensing things around him, he became deadly afraid that someone would find out. As a result he tends to think about every scenario before taking action, which has on numerous occasions saved him and his partner. Sometimes he does let his innate curiosity get the better of him, throwing caution to the wind.

Note that I ended up taking extra obligation for credits even though taking more xp at the beginning is probably a better idea in the long run. It plays better to the type of character Massan is, always looking for the latest and greatest gadgets and gizmos. So I've bought a pistol all modders supposedly love and several attachments he can spend his free time tinkering with. Also some slicing gear, a medpack and other items which will benefit the group.

So a human that speaks Mando'a and lives the Mandalorian values, correct?

For some reason I am getting Bumblebee from the Michael Bay Transformers.

I'm not sure how I feel about the character. I don't know if it is just the concept, the math or something else, but I am not really sold on it.

Refine it a bit more and I'll take another look.

I've never seen those movies, so I'm only able to produce Bumblebee from the 80's cartoons. I agree, the character is more a novelty, not built to suit any specific purpose other than to be fun to play...in theory. I'm recently a fan of "service droid escapes service" concepts but maybe this isn't the right one.

I've updated Lynna's character sheet with more background, and fleshed out her other details:

Lynna Sellua

Lynna Sellua was born the daughter of Rylothi noble Alaric Sellua. Pampered and privileged, educated in the arts of courtship, seduction, and every other expectation of a Twi'lek princess, hers was a charmed life.

The Sellua Clan were bonded in service to the Hutt Cartels, though to one of the more lowly families. That family had however acquired a factory of service droids some thirty years prior to the Clone Wars, and thus been able to staff their large mining complex on Ryloth with droids, turning the once-worthless site into a fine source of profit. The Selluas and their servants had served as administrators and maintained the droids, and those serving under them were treated well by the Hutts.

Born during the first days of the Clone Wars, Lynna was an infant when the Separatists came to Ryloth. Her father armed his workers and their heavy lifting droids, and they kept up an effective resistance in the hills above Lessu for six weeks before Republic liberation forces arrived to relieve them. The light armour column soon moved on, but what followed was a period of advantage for the Selluas. While always wealthy, the war opened up many new business opportunities for Alaric to exploit. The family moved to an expensive Lessu town house when Lynna was two years old, and growing up she had all the benefits of a wealthy child on Ryloth.

Despite this though, Lynna still visited the family's old work place as she grew older. There she saw firsthand the poor conditions of the slaves, and though they were better off than many on Ryloth it still went against her nature. Lynna was determined that neither she nor anyone else should be enslaved again.

When she turned twenty-one, Alaric told Lynna that he had lined her up a very nice - and substantially wealthy - husband. Sure, Silvo Poruna was ten years older than Lynna, still lived on his family's estate, was a spineless cave-shrimp and had a reputation for going through servants at an uncomfortable rate. But he had a family fortune of over a million credits. Alaric thus had no understanding of his daughter instead told him her intention to go off-world and travel the stars.

Lynna wanted to live a life of adventure for a few years, travelling the galaxy and gaining a greater understanding of the nature of the universe. She had seen Twi'leks who looked only at the ground, who'd never left Ryloth or seen a creature not born under the red sun. She wanted none of that - it might have been the place of a Twi'lek princess to giggle and curtsey to her alotted husband, but she was not that kind of being.

The two fought for a long while over this, but ultimately at the exhortation of his wife Mirella Alaric gave in and permitted Lynna to leave the homeworld. However, he laid down one condition: unless she had settled herself down after two years, she must return to the homeworld to meet her betrothed and be married. Lynna accepted, and boarded the first freighter out of there.

Since then, she has gone from job to job. Her trail across the stars has been marked by a string of broken hearts and broken cages both. Odd jobs everywhere from patrolling the depths of a garbage scow for mynocks, to serving as a courtesan and entertainer aboard the Galactic Empire's finest starliner, have kept her in credits over the years. However after a job gone wrong - and a marriage that lasted six months longer than she had ever wanted - she is left creditless, with only a blaster to her name and a ship to pilot, one populated by a crew of questionable competency.

To this day she still wears her ritual betrothal armlet as a token for her father's wishes, but it has been nearly two years and she has no intention of returning home any time soon

Motivation

Discovery - Lynna is driven to discover what lies elsewhere in the universe, and to make use of the freedom so rarely granted to women of her kind.

Obligations

20 - Marriage Promise: Lynna is betrothed to wealthy Twi'lek heir Silvo Poruna. However to call him an odious slimo would be a disservice to every other odious slimo, so Lynna must keep away from either his foul clutches, or her father's well-meaning ones.

Description

Female; 23; 5'7"; curvy build, lithe and agile; blue-eyed and blue-skinned; she wears practical pilot's clothing with durable utility trousers, a hard-wearing jacket and shirt, and has been known to wear a broad-brimmed hat on occasion; still wears the ritual betrothal armlet of her clan, despite her reluctance to actually obey its summons.

As I have 15 XP remaining (5 left over and 10 from extra Obligation) I was going to invest it in going for Piloting (Space) 2, Ranged (Light) 2 or Piloting (Planetary) 1, though I could also save up for Charm 2. Thoughts?

  • Pilot (Space) will not have extensive use initially. Pilot (Planetary) will be more useful.

I would think Piloting (Space) should be out as a choice. You can always beef up your piloting later, when it becomes a skill you are likely to use more. I would go for either charm or ranged.

EDIT: Also, if anyone has found a better picture of a Klatooinian I would love a pm with the URL. I can't find any good Klatooinian art :(

I'll decide later. For now I'm banking the XP on the assumption of taking Charm, unless someone else wants to Face.

There is no Arkanian RAW yet. There's one in the Unofficial Species Menagerie. Cratala in Beyond the Rim is Arkanian, but I think her stats edged more toward the intelligence side than what Achoa would have. He would probably have high presence and cunning the way I imagine him. I'm not married to him having to be an Arkanian, I just was trying to think of a haughty, arrogant species and they fit the bill. He could be anything.

Tion wouldn't know what happened to Gareth. He's curious to find out, but doesn't want to risk making any kind of inquiry. Achoa would've beaten a confession out of the old man once he discovered the foul play. He knew Tion and Gareth were close and Gareth was kind of a computer whiz, certainly more so than Tion, so it wouldn't take much to put two and two together on that. Good call on rivalries amongst the slaves. Of course there was one that was always jealous of Tion being kind of favored by Achoa (there always is, right?). Her name is Plesh and she was the one that planted the seed of doubt that Tion won his freedom fairly.

If being a former slave is going to be too much of a complication, we can change it up so instead of a slave owner, Achoa's the head of a criminal syndicate or pirate captain who takes in young orphans and makes them work for him. Then he wouldn't have a legal claim of ownership to Tion but would still take out a bounty on him to bring him back as a matter of pride. I think I actually kind of like that better anyway. It would be more of a betrayal by Tion, especially given that Achoa always treated him better than the others.

Thoughts?
