Imperial List - Punisher?

By ExplodedZombie, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi folks. I was wondering if I could get some opinions on this list. I flew it twice with great success (Alpha'd A-wing and Contract Scout). And then I got it handed to me in a really nasty way today (vs Dengar, Z-95 with feedback, K-Fighter). Partially due to a traffic jam / bad flying but I think the list could use work or belongs in the trash. So here goes:

(30) Darth Vader (29), TIE/x1 (0), Adaptability +1 (0), Advanced Targeting Computer

(31) The Inquisitor (25), Autothrusters (2), Tie/v1 (1), Push the Limit (3)

(38) Redline (27), Guidance Chips (0), Cluster Missiles (4), Extra Munitions (2), Plasma Torpedoes (3), Fire Control System (2)

Total 99 Points

I was super proud that I came up with this semi-clever list myself. Then I was super sad :(

Any help would be appreciated.

Also thinking of switching to 2 bombers, 2 Advanced Ties.

What went wrong vs Dengar list, other than traffic jam? What did you need that you didnt have?

To start, you could drop Cluster Missiles or Plasmas from Redline. I would drop clusters just because range 3 initial strike is important right now, and if you miss getting into range 2 against scouts, redline could be dead before he fires his clusters the next round. Dropping one will will free up points to add Engine Upgrade to Vader or even a Homing Missile for a strong alpha strike with Redlines missiles and Inquisitors 3 reds. Homing missiles on Vader will come in handy vs aces as well, but EU will keep him dodging those arcs. So, best bet I think is to drop Clusters or Plasmas, and upgrade Vader or even swap him out for Carnor Jax or Soonts.

The list I ran for a while with redline has Fel and then two obsidian squad pilots for blockers to help set redline up.

If only redline could take deadeye

Agree that you should swap out the Clusters for EU on Vader. Turns him into a much better arc-dodger. I've flown that exact Redline build myself once or twice and it's not uncommon for him to die before getting all four torps/missiles off (he's the easiest ship in your list to hit by far, so he will be taking fire). It also keeps your 1 point initiative bid.

An alternative to Redline - if you want to deny your opponent an easy target - might actually be Vessery. VI, Ion Cannon and TIE/D comes in at 39 points. Both Vader and Inquisitor will be locking often so he'll have consistent use of his ability, he's a lot harder to hit than a punisher, and with two attacks he's got a similar damage output. The downside is you can't put EU on Vader without downgrading Inquisitor to OL or something like that. Just wanted to throw that out there as an option.

No, I would not recommend dropping clusters from Redline. Run him at 38 points because that's where he's effective.

The real problem is that you don't have enough points to run a useful Vader. I would spend those 30 points on something more effective. There's quite a few good options:

-2 black squadrons w/ crack shot

-Palp shuttle

-Omega Leader (plus you can throw proton rockets on Inquisitor)

-pair of obsidians (plus you can throw proton rockets on Inquisitor)

-Onyx pilot w/ X-7 (when Imp Vets comes out)
