The (never)end(ing) game vs Fel

By Rauhughes, in X-Wing

I think I need help. I seem to have a soontir shaped problem and I'm sure I can't be the only one.

My problem is simply I don't seem to be able to find an effective solution to deal with a 1v1 endgame when the surviving enemy ship is soontir Fel.

Against a good Fel player in this situation the best I can usually engineer is a stalemate. As my primary ship is normal around 40-43 point mark this results in the oh so disappointing modified win in Swiss. With a couple of regionals and an open event coming up I really need to find a way to deal with this situation if it arrises.

Assuming the ace facing Fel is going to be <12 points more than Fel and at best the same pilot skill but without an int bid what general advice can anyone give to close out these situations.

Whilst I appreciate not letting he game go close enough to end up in this situation in their rat place is the best solution to the problem, it's not really the directions of advice I'm looking for :)

If you can't deal with him in the endgame kill him before you get there.

With Soontir the best options are to outmaneuver him, control him or block him. To outmaneuver you need PS10 or 11 (if you bid low enough ps 9 works fine too) with boosting or barrel rolling. If you can get to the end game with 2 ships vs Soontir you can block him with one and kill with the other. Otherwise you might want to look into adding an Ion or Stress mechanic into your list.

Always remember he is a fast flyer, he has to do at least speed 2 to burn the stress. If you have something that can do 1 turns you might be able to get behind him, and then its just a matter of time.

I'm assuming you're familiar with the ship(s) that is usually left facing Fel - could you tell which ship(s) that might be? Or at least give us a faction...

The answer, though, is it really depends..

I would start by saying I hope some of those 12+ points are spent on dishing out stress or gaining a higher PS than the Baron.

Alternatively, try picking up your opponent's Fel miniature and tossing it across the room..

I almost ion stressed him off the table once, so that really works against him.

The only reason he didnt fly off the table was because that turn the ion move would have moved him off,the damage from the Ion Cannon actually finished him off.

Same thing happened when I fought a Decimator with my same list, I almost had it go off the talbe from my constant ionization, but it died before going off.

The most obvious solution is not to let Soontir make it to the end game.

1v1, unless you have Gunner or a similar mechanic, he's almost impossible to take down. You really need multiple shots against him, and/or way to deliver unavoidable damage (mines, Feedback Array etc)

Make him your priority target. Throw everything you've got at him first chance you get.

This is why people hate Fel. Because he's awesome.

Fel pretty much demands you focus him down while you have multiple ships, or get lucky as hell. If you beat him 1v1 with any ship then either the Soontir player did something stupid with him or completely wiffed his defense dice.

I chased one around for 6 rounds with a FatHan + Biggs list. Biggs never had a shot on him until turn 7....upon which he somehow 1shotted him lol. FatHan (with Luke not Gunner) shot at him for 6 rounds with rerolls and extra attack and never hit him lol.

The more individual attacks you can do the better. The main strength he has is he gets an evade AND focus every turn. On average, they counter two attacks but the third he most likely wont have anything left unless he gets a lucky roll and doesnt need either.

Could also get your hands on one of those ... autoblasters? forget the weapon name but you cant roll dice against Hits done by this weapon. He can still evade token it but thats only 1 evade. Long as a single hit goes through, he gets a lot easier to take out.

auto-blaster turrets

seismic charges

conner nets

sabine wren (crew)

darth vader

oicuun

Block/stress/ion/tractor beam/gunner/Vader/ect him early. He's a lategame monster, don't let him last that long.

Omega Leader. That'll do it.

Its worse when your the fel player and the opponent is just good enough to not get killed or has regen and you know you should win but you can 't cause of time

I've won vs soontir with red ace/D2/comm/autothrysters. Without TL/Focus he wasn't able to deal with the amount of negation and regen. So time was on my side

49-point Corran fixes this problem completely. I always bring at least 1.

Homing Missiles. Might take a couple, but negates evade tokens.

Lt Blount and IPM or Advanced Homing Missiles.

Feedback Array

Stress.

Truth. Corran eats Fel for breakfast 1v1. Or he just plays to time and wins that way. Either way, Corran's end game beats Fel's hands down.

It's Soontir Fel, just die like everyone else.

that's a lot of points on a ship.

Yea. Enough points to get a full win on every closer he can't outright kill.

I used to run this in Wave 5-7:

52 Oicunn w/ EH, Gunner, Vadar.

Enjoy Soontir's tears. It's also an excellent ship against everything except IG88s. The trick is to use Vader sparingly.

This.

Also, Vader Crew.

Oh, also Ten Numb. What else. Feedback Array. Proximity Mines and Connor Net.

You actually can't use evade tokens against an Autoblaster. Evade tokens count as adding an evade result and are for all intents and purposes evade dice, and Autoblaster's hits cannot be canceled by evade dice.

With that said, autoblasters still suck. ;)

Autoblaster turrets are nice, though.

Oh, absolutely. On both points.

VCX-100 + Ghost/Phantom + Zeb + Accuracy Corrector + Autoblaster Turret = Very fun times indeed.
