Set Your Price: New Merc Preview

I'm excited to try get some mileage out of Under Duress.
It could maybe even bring IG-88 back into the game if you surround him with Wing Guards... maaaaybe.
Loving "Under Duress" for my Nexu list and all the bleeding. Those Regular Wing Guards abilities seem really underwhelming. Sure, they can recover, which is huge, but with only 3 health, taking the damage yourself in hopes of recovering later seems like a <TRUMP> 'uuuuuge </TRUMP> risk. The Elites on the other hand, are solid.
Guess that's why it's a GAMBIT.
Edited by FizzI like the Wing Guards, except the Squad Training. Thats Stormtroopers. Rest is awesome.

As ThatJakeGuy has brought to my attention at all of those new campaign cards can be used on AT-STs.
An AT-ST 'in the shadows' or as a 'true shadow' lol that's so dumb. Ninja AT-ST tiptoeing behind enemy lines.
What I want to know is: Why is Magnum P.I. working as a Wing Guard? (The Wing Guard on the far right)
The Elite Winged Guards seem pretty powerful defensively, could definitely see running 2 of them with reinforcements

Sadly only on dessert maps :*( but it would make sense that it could camouflage there ![]()
Some rules questions:
Does overclocked let a junk droid attack twice in one activation? With single purpose would it let the junk droid attack three times? With "To The Limit" would it let you use your junk droid for 4 attacks?
Is there a limit to how many junk droids can be in play? Does having more tinkerers allow more junk droids to be summoned? Or can one tinkerer summon multiple junk droids?
Not a rules question - but observation:
Elite Wing Guards get squad training, but they don't get to use their stress mechanic if the opponent attacks another wing guard next to them. So that makes it a little harder to use the stress mechanic...unless you run something like - 2 Elite Stormtroopers, 2 Elite Wing Guards, Temp Alliance, Rule By Fear, and Officer.
I just want to say:
Holy **** stealth is nuts.
I was a bit dubious of hidden at first but applying it to melee attacks where you don't have (usually) surges for accuracy and will be lucky to be rolling better than GY (19/36 chance of getting the nescessary 3 accuracy) in terms of accuracy (and exhausting at the end of your activation means there's virtually no reason to not be hidden) is ridiculous for 1 xp. (The deck as a whole looks really annoying to play against).
Also: Wasn't everyone talking about everything in Bespin having white die?...
Edit: Just realized you is a figure in the context of stealth, that makes everything more reasonable.

Wing Guard - Keep the Peace is a decent ability to help spread around damage and the fact that it doesn't work on Guardians means you'll want to mix up your figures (generally good). The recover ability is quite synergistic since you'll be taking 1 or 2 damage here and there anyway. The Elite ones are you want to be since they surge for 2 damage and re-roll just like the venerable Elite Stormtroopers. Is it worth loosing the eStomies Last Stand Focus ability and accuracy surge for a recover surge and Keep the Peace? I think the answer is: it depends but sometimes yes (which is great). Notably however: Keep the Peace and Squad Training are a bit of a nonbo together as you want to be adjacent to Troopers but not Guardians (all the more reason to mix in other Stormtroopers!). Obviously, the biggest gain for Scum here is that they finally get access to Reinforcements and Grenadier, some of the best command cards in the current meta: I certainly see starting my Merc Lists with 2x eWings for now.
Ugnaught Tinkerer - AFAIK you can only have one companion Junk Droid at a time and if your Tinkerer is killed your Junk Droid goes too. Assuming those are both true I'm a bit underwhelmed: the droids are fine as a way to assert area control, finish weakened figures, and soak attacks away from your main figures. The problem is really that the Tinkerer itself becomes the proper (and weak) target. So either you hide it away in back where you don't get much utility other than the Junk Droid (not worth 3 points) or you risk it up front where it's a much easier target assuming it's worth targeting over anything else. Since it rolls pretty weak attack die, it may be best to ignore it and focus on other more dangerous figures that do more damage. The Elite version helps a lot on health, Overclock, and with Pierce 2, but 5 points is beyond filler range, and I'm doubtful that its offensive abilities merit the points in a competitive skirmish list where those same points are more than half of a Bantha, HK, or eWing Guard.
Under Duress - This is exactly what strain focused builds needed to see to supercharge the discarding process. I'm still unsure if there are enough reliable strain effects attached to good figures that I would want to play this but it will only get better as more are printed in the future (i.e. Wing Gaurds). I would have liked this a lot more at 1 point but 2 is probably a better for the future.

Yes (The junk droid is not performing an action to attack), Yes, No (single purpose sets up to twice so so even if you use To the Limit twice is the limit on uses of overclock).
The limit of the number of junk droids in play will be set by component limitations, given that the cards say "the" I expect it to be one.

Technically, the Ugnaught's activation would allow the Junk Droid to interrupt the Ugnaught's activation with Overclocked and perform an attack, and then when the Junk Droid's activation happens, it would still be able to attack. If Single Purpose was played on the Ugnaught, I don't see why it would not be able to overclock the Junk Droid twice, since the attacks would technically happen outside the Junk Droid's activation.

Looks to be a single Junk Droid token share between all Ugnaughts.
Thanks Norgrath, I forgot the wording on Single Purpose being limited to up to twice and therefore To The Limit doesn't make it able to be done three times.
On the Junk Droid, I wish they would spell it out and have been 100% clear so we can actually be planning/strategizing more.
Further discussion of junk droids: do we assume companions will have figure cost 0?
In of the campaign:
I would never bring regular Wing Guards over Storm Troopers, but the Elites are another story as Keep the Peace is a fair trade over Last Stand.
The Ugnaughts compare to the Probe Droids. I think I still like the Probes better, but Ugnaughts arent bad. The Elite guy could actually hit quite hard if you ignore him.
The agenda cards are w/e.
The Black Ops class deck is the star here. It looks to be the first class deck that is primarily defensive, which is sorely needed. With the right units, this is a scary deck. Use into the Shadows with a Wampa to give it a bonus surge. HKs will be particularly nasty with this deck.
This sounds interesting:
There are three distinct companions included in The Bespin Gambit, but the Ugnaught Tinkerer is only interested in one: the Junk Droid.
Two more companions; wonder what they could be.
It would be nice to know so I can start searching for 3D proxies ASAP, FFG!! ![]()
I am one hundred percent over the moon about Wing Guards. They are awesome.
I was genouinely expecting that they would have 2/4HP, a GY or YY attack or be otherwise gimped to continue the long standing tradition of skirmish mercs just not making the cut.
Instead, Mercs just got a unit that is virtually the equal of eStormtroopers, both on offense and on defense, and also come with an extra trait, recover (a beast when combined with Reinforcements) and a potentially okay secondary ability. Definetly not what I was expecting, but I love it. True, the regulars are kinda naff and they might struggle to do the same long range snipes that eStormtroopers and eRebel Troopers do with their accuracy surges, but I can live with that.
Personally I'd like them to have white defence, both thematically (they don't wear the same amount of junk as Stormtroopers) and mechanically (between that and Squad Training it would make them the ultimate halfway point between Imperial and Rebel troopers) but honestly that's just nitpicking.
Ooh, and I just realized something. These guys are going to be best friends 4 life with HK droids. Picture this: a Wing Trooper is parked next to an HK. A random enemy shmo declares an attack against the droid. You can actually resolve Keep the Peace, AND THEN play Bodyguard to redirect the attack.

I'm predicting there'll be an interrogation probe for the agenda set.
Pretty stoked about Under Duress. Did a boss paint job on Dengar andoes want to field him more. Here's my preliminary shot at it. Might need to makeep room for Bossk though once we learn more about him.
6▪ Elite Nexu
3▪ Gideon Argus
2▪ C-3PO
1▪ Temporary Alliance
7▪ Trandoshan Hunter
7▪ Trandoshan Hunter
7▪ Dengar
4▪ Nexu
1▪ Beast Tamer
2▪ Under Duress
I think lobot will be a companion. Wish he was a separate character but that's my guess for one of the other companions.
Just switch out Dengar and Beast Tamer for Bossk and you should be good. Not top tier by any stretch, but good and fun.
I was excited about Under Duress when I first read it, but that 2pts cost really stings. I'm having trouble fitting everything I want into Merc lists as it stands right now. Wing Guard are definetly a step in the right direction, the next thing Mercs need is a cheap Leader support piece and they'll be golden. Just let us get rid of the 4pt Gideon tax already!
As an Imperial Campaign Player, this is the expansion I have been most excited about! It may not be the best, but it looks like it'll be FUN!!! As for companions, I think we'll finally get the most important of imperials: MOUSE DROIDS!!!!
