Soldier Book

By 2P51, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I certainly can understand that not every show will be to everyone's taste. (Although I'd hardly call the brevity of Firefly's brief run an indication of audience acceptance nearly as much as an indication of network mismanagement. I mean, when the last episode you air out of a dozen is the first episode...)

At the end of the day, though, I don't think we'd have Edge of the Empire without Firefly. EotE very neatly sets up the ability to do a Firefly-type setup, just using the Star Wars setting. And how many campaigns can we see out there described in the shorthand of, "It's like Firefly in Star Wars?" Without Firefly and it's after-market success, I think we'd instead see a more generalized Star Wars RPG (like the iterations that came before) rather than the three separate sub-games.

Sir, different strokes and all, but I will have words with someone who wants to punch my sweet Kaylee in the face. Just for that, I hope the TFA box is even flimsier than the existing beginner game boxes!

Tastes are weird. I just don't like anime, for example. All my friends are always showing me stuff and telling me how great it is, and I just don't get it.

I loathe anime with a passion, it's like chewing sand and glass for me to sit and watch it.

That is like saying you hate western movies. All of them. With passion. Or all animation movies, from Lion King over The Secret of NIMH to Fritz the Cat. Anime is not even a genre, it just animation from japan. Often indiscernible from cartoons and other western animation.

/doesn't like westerns....

I've seen this sentiment a number of times and I still find it weird. Replace "anime" with "American television" and read how odd it seems. Somebody wouldn't exactly lump Firefly, Seinfeld and Survivor into the same category of show, but people do it all the time with anime. It's about as varied as any other fiction you can find anywhere else; there's not some underlining thing to be found in all anime that somebody has to "get" to understand, it's just television.

Just venting.

Cultural barriers are tricky beasts, and can sometimes be difficult to get around. Replace "anime" with "French Cinema" or even "Country Music" and it doesn't sound all that odd. And while there is a lot of variety in anime, there are broad stylistic commonalities, and if someone is put off by some of those, then saying "I don't like anime" is a fair cop. Might there be some unique gem of an anime out there, completely different from everything else coming from Japan, that they would like? Sure, but I don't expect them to dig through a bunch of stuff they don't like to find it. And trying to force someone who doesn't like country music to listen to Johnny Cash because "no, I swear, this stuff is different and you'll like it" rarely ends well.

In that case I'll take a look, Mr Penguin. The ones I've seen I've hardly been able to tell them apart, because they all seem to have large-eyed people in short skirts doing bizarre things.

Well, if you're open to another friend shoving another list at you, let me think on it for a bit and I'll see if I cant come up with a couple shows/movies that aren't just big eyed schoolgirls doing bizarre things for you to try.

Yes My Neighbor Totoro is wildly different from Evangelion as from Akira as from Dirty Pair as from Speed Racer - but there is a lot of commonality that runs through the medium, especially in the last decade or so where cute schoolgirls seems to be dominante.

Mind you, if someone is able to sit through Grave of the Fireflies without weeping like a baby, then they are a monster with no soul.

Yeah, but you wanted to punch the most adorable spaceship mechanic in the 'verse in the face, so.... :P

Western mixed with other genres - Firefly, Back to the Future Part III, Cowboys & Aliens, Mask of Zorro, etc - I can get behind. But just straight-up westerns? The genre & setting just leaves me cold. That's not to say I haven't seen moments from westerns here and there that struck my fancy. But friends making me watch Silverado may have been one of the longest movie-watching experiences of my life. (Although I did like John Cleese in it..."Today, my jurisdiction ends here.")

Sure I do.....especially with lemon and melted butter.........mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Grave of the Fireflies is actually one I would recommend to just about anybody, if only for it's own sake. I would never watch it again if I can help it, but it's worth a watching.

So, how about those soldiers and all the soldiering they do?

Wow, they really soldier on through all that tough soldier-y stuff, don't they?

...

This one is totally the best, if only because the enemy Soldiers are so obviously mannequins.

Commando is such a great horrible 80's action movie.

Eighties Ahnold is Best Ahnold.

I'll watch Predator any day thanks (come to think of it that would be a fun encounter in an AoR/FaD game). Nice montage too

(Also, it has one of the best openings in television , animated or otherwise)

Kinda like a cross between the intros for Mod Squad and the old James Bond movies (with Sean Connery)?

Hmm. I’m kind of conflicted on that.

I don't know if I actually got us all the way back on track, but I think we're closer than we were...

Meh, I'm gonna count it as a win.

It's hard for me to jump in since I sorta can't. It's kind of a no brainer book I think, easy to come up with spec ideas for a Soldier career as well as gear and such.

The Spy and Engineer books will have more surprises I'm sure.

Then there's that pesky Bounty Hunter book.....

So you have had the full AoR/EotE list of careers available for your games for how long now?

I don't have them all....yet...

As far as species, I am guessing, besides Shistavenan, we might see Talz and maybe Ubese.

Also, I'd really like to see the I-7 Howlrunner and the Carrack-class Light Cruiser in the ships section. I love the ship stats from the majority of the books, so I'm really looking forward to seeing some military oriented ships from this book.

Who doesn't love Firefly, it's awesome!

It's Shiny :D

Besides it means not liking Ghost in the Shell. Forget about Firefly, not liking Ghost in the Shell is a sin. You are a bad person and will go to hell if you do not like Ghost in the Shell.

Liar, everyone here loves star wars :P

Country music is a genre, french cinema is often misused by americans as a genre as well, while it actually odd to say if you actually mean all of french cinema. They are fantastic and broad as well. Hating stereotypical Hollywood movies is not odd, hating all american movies is. Same applies to animie, even more so as the range of target audience ranges from 6 year old girls over 13 year old boy over till 50 year old ladies. ;-)

I hate Country & Western music, that's a genera that includes Western.

It's hard for me to jump in since I sorta can't.

Yeah, that's the one downside to playtesting, is that you already know what most of the new crunch for an upcoming book is going to look like.

That doesn't mean there aren't surprises, but those are far and few between.
