Also amusing how they are coy on all the new species lately.
If they can't tap the old EU, it means they're mining the cantina and palace scenes for obscure races that are pretty niche at best. Surely at this point, those who want something exotic are already well-catered for?

Don't forget all those creatures at the BOONTANEVE CLASSICS

No sourcebook thread would be complete without you complaining about the species selection, Marcy

It's my job, and I do it to the best of my ability!
Desslok gets to spectacularly derail threads and I get to complain about the species. Tough job but someone's gotta do it.
It is interesting, though, that this stuff doesn't make it into the articles these days, suggesting that it's no longer really a selling point to play armchair-elephant-people or furry platypus or whatever.
Though joking aside, all I've ever argued for is some much-needed balance , and a few more iconic species. With Special Modifications, FFG pretty much admitted they were straight-up trolling the fanbase by deliberately selecting non-tech races.

So apart from the few pictures in the 2 articles do we have nothing but idle speculation on the 3 races?
So the question is: 151+ on the Critical Injury chart is death. Can someone using Unmatched Courage ignore even that extreme a Critical Injury until the ability wears off?
If so (and I think, in my games at least, it will be so regardless of official rulings), that's an awesome way to do a last stand - you know you're already dead, but you fight on for two to three minutes more before you finally go down, giving your friends time to escape, or set the charges, or whatever.
What an amazing way for a character to go!
Edited by Absol197IMO, she doesn't look Brawn-y enough (or Burly enough) to use that weapon to best effect. To me she looks more like Alliance recruiting propaganda than a real Heavy soldier.
Take a look at Daisy Ridley's workout videos. You don't have to be big and bulky to be strong.
As a card-carrying lady martial artist, I can confirm this. My 60-year old Elder Master is also a tiny little lady, and yet she is scary strong.
Pro-tip: of you ever see her with a Kwan Dao, back away quickly.
Edited by Absol197You've all seen pictures of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and she can do more pushups than me and probably lifts more than I do.
Take a look at Daisy Ridley's workout videos.
Ooh, if I must! For informational purposes only, of course
You don't have to be big and bulky to be strong.
And the Heavy spec has a number of Talents that are expressly there to let a small being or slim lady handle the bigger, Cumbersome weapons without needing high Brawn. It's kind of the Rocket Raccoon or Jenette Vasquez spec really.

Yeah. It's called Burly. IMO, it's one of those talents that is likely to be obvious when someone possesses it.
Since you use Vasquez as an example, I would point out that I'd have been fine if the soldier depicted in the artwork had a weapon harness to help support it. IMO, that would have actually made her look more badass.
Okay, the weapon depicted is basically laser chain gun. Despite what you see in movies, a minigun like Jesse Ventura had in predator, is a vehicle mounted weapon. A human could not fire it. Now, since the rotary blaster does not have to contend with lead bullets, just packets of tibanna gas turned into plasma, it would be lighter than said impossible to fire from the hip minigun.
Bruce Lee was pretty strong. The clones who also used this weapon are likely strong, but none of them are super jacked.
It's not like Hevy (CT-782) was all that burly outside his clone trooper armor either:
Wait, the clone spelled his name "Hevy," not "Heavy?"
...Am I a bad person because that missing "a" makes me like an awesome character so much less? I am? Darn...
I think it's important to remember this is a Star Wars game, where only a handful of X-wings take out a moon (or planet) sized super weapon. A human holding a fully automatic weapon fits within that theme very well.
Do we even know how heavy these heavy repeating blasters are? We only have an abstract encumbrance rating.
Yeah. It's called Burly. IMO, it's one of those talents that is likely to be obvious when someone possesses it.
I think that's just wording, really. It could easily be reskinned as 'Heavy Weapons Handling' or something. It's best not to get too tied up in the names*; a Thief or Colonist need not actually be any of these things. This talent seems to be there expressly to let the little guys (or gals) get optimal use out of the Spec. Yes, Vasquez is pretty buff, if small, but Rocket certainly isn't buff or strong and still likes his big guns. A Heavy can certainly play against type if they wish.
(*Heck, one of our players refers to Dixie's 'Distracting Behaviour' talent as 'My Eyes Are Up Here'...)
And honestly it's something anyone has been able to do since Dangerous Covenants was released, where Heavy first appeared. The only reason we are talking about it now is because some chick in an awesome piece of artwork is doing this.

Why bother with the names and fluff at all? Why not release all the mechanics in a vacuum, with no context whatsoever?

Sadly no, and that's been the trend for quite some time.
Welcome to the community too.

You know the actual splatbooks suggest you do this, going into some detail how your Hired Gun might have been a union boss or heavy machinery operator or something and how you can basically make your own careers by choosing certain Specs?
Plenty of people here have interpreted various specs, careers or talents in different ways.

Thanks for the welcome.
Disappointing that they don't preview the races anymore, the new specialisations and races are always what draws me to new books at first. That said the Soldier book is an auto-buy for me as half my party are Soldiers and another has a specialisation from the career.
Well the preview certainly makes things more interesting. A shame we only get to speculate on species, but I maintain we'll see Chagrian (as with Sgt. Rusk from SWTOR) as one of them. They appear to be going down the SWTOR route with the Vanguard too, who as I predicted appears to be a 'forlorn hope', 'first into the breach' type. The Heavy will probably be a reprint of the one from Dangerous Covenants. The Trailblazer looks interesting - it's likely to emulate the Ratling Trailblazer from FFG's Only War, and I can see them having a few sniping talents as well as scouting ones. Otherwise, I'm mostly looking forward to some more weapons and adventure hooks, though the new vehicles could have potential - T-2b and T-4b tanks would be very welcome.
