Soldier Book

Not a single hint (not even an image) on what species we may see.

Vanguard sounds interesting.

Just when the forum panic sets in speculating that FFG is ramping down the RPG line... a new announcement. LOL! Looking forward to this release quite a bit.

...did you miss the Shistavanen Medic?

I noted it. Shistavanen, (like Bothans, Devarionains, and a few other species in Star Wars history), vary in appearance from medium to medium. So it's difficult to tell if that's what I was seeing or not. I mostly blame Dark Horse for that. They love to stylize.

I just think they're pacing out the expansion books so they don't overwhelm buyers. Let's face it, usualyy the GM is the one buying most of the rules, and with three (or four if we count TFA) lines to keep up on, this pace is more than fast enough.

I'm sure we'll see quite a few more AoR and F&D books to come, along with a Bounty Hunters book for EotE.

It'll be interesting to see how the Vanguard distinguishes itself from the Commando, as that already has some of the "tough as nails close range combatant" feel down. Since "Vanguard" was the name of the tank-spec for the Trooper in TOR, it might get some Bodyguard (or similar) talents, but the snippet here doesn't suggest that. The bit about breaching fortifications suggests perhaps a minor in demolitions work.

Also, as many were expecting, the Soldier is getting a copy of the Heavy spec, so enjoy your chain-gun-toting soldiers. :D

Vanguard is also the name of the missile tube Rebel troopers from the first two Battlefront games.

On the surface it seems a little meh, but those 2 new specs sound interesting and the equipment section should be bulky. Of course the most interesting bits will be all the ideas crammed in on running encounters and adventures. Anyone wanting a heavy can have it right now too.

I didn't expect that we would be getting this book until early next year.

I'm definitely going to pick this one up once it is released!!! I'm really hoping that we get the Shistavanen like the one in the article!

As with EVERY book release, I hope for the Bith to show up - yes, i know, they aren't known for being soldiers, but FFG have long ago thrown out the idea of 'thematically fitting' species with career books.

This, however, may be a good time to give some species from the Force Awakens, notably Abednedo and Tarsunt.

Dream list: Abednedo, Bith, Tarsunt

Likely random: shistavanen (based on medic picture), zeltron, and lamproid - because race selection is random at this point.

Not really.

I'll agree that Special Modification's were...perplexing...but most of the other books, the races have made sense.

Is that a clone wars era starfighter I see in one of those pictures advertising this book?

So is it hinting at Separatist or Clone Wars vehicles?

I sense (a grave disturbance in the Force) that the new species will probably hew quite closely to what we think of as the more militaristic/disciplined species of the galaxy. Therefore I'd predict Chagrians to appear, along with the Shistavanen. I couldn't predict the third species, though perhaps Zabrak could make their jump across the system gap.

Having Clone Wars vehicles included is IMHO highly likely, as if one combines that with the TFA box set there does seem to be a nice trend towards era-appropriate gear. The fact that wrecked ARC-170s appear seems more than thematic, while the presence of what looks like a Clone helmet in the Shistavanen image further hints that there will be Clone Wars-era gear featured. This being the 'war' book, I'd expect that as well as reprinting a whole lot of gear from Dangerous Covenants we'll see a lot of combat gear.

And from what I can determine, the Vanguard is likely to be a combat engineer type - part-saboteur, part-demolitionist, part-tank hunter, but still able to hold their own in a fight.

Could you elaborate?

Not really what *I* hope for every book?

Not really a good time/place for abednedo/tarsunt?

Not really random? Because if we go some of the releases, the species are not necessarily what I first thought. I had pegged Bith for the entertainer book, because F'grin Dan and the Modal Nodes playing the cantina song is so ingrained in our culture, ans so iconic i thought it was a given.. Just not a givin. Special modifications was all left-field

I think there have been some unexpected entries in the species, but I don't think that should be conflated with 'random.' I certainly see a theme in the chosen, and the more obscure ones usually have fluff that justifies their inclusion (Does anybody ready that?). I suppose my ability to retain a... vast amount of rather useless trivia about fiction I like goes a long way in helping me see where the choices are coming from. Special Modifications are perhaps the most unexpected, but not necessarily random.

I wonder if FFG have enough fresh content for characters to fill about 7 more career sourcebooks.

Soldiers... hmmm maybe some official stats for Lasat? That would be pretty sweet, and would fit in with theme of the book.

I think the F&D books will branch out a bit more along the spiritual lines - give us some more traditional weapons and Force-focused gear. The specialisations are also unlikely to be clones so much, as there looks to be at least one extra Lightsaber specialisation in each one.

That would also be good, and very cool to boot.

Honestly from the brief blurb Vanguard seems to be more of a front line leader that charges through the breach then anything else. The Trailblazer just seems to be just another in a long line of scout, hunter, pathfinder, etc specs we already have so I'm not exactly seeing why we should bother with it.

I'm really hoping we get Ewoks, Human Clone, and Talz for species..

So what other specs do you all think could be duplicated? These are my picks:

FaD will get all new specs, no duplicates here.

Between EotE and AoR we have 3 more career books to be announced, Bounty Hunter, Engineer and Spy (I think in that order).

Engineer could easily fit the Droid Tech into it, the others from SM seem too edge themed for cross over, Scholar is the other that could fit but it's very similar to Scientist. So 1 more duplicate here in the Droid Tech, with a Shipwright and a Fortifications expert.

If the Bounty Hunter book has some kind of detective in it then that could fit very well into the Spy book, sadly that would mean 3 duplicates in a single career so I hope that doesn't happen. Tactician could fit a BH too for those bigger Bounties that require a team to take down. Even Rigger may fit the BH book too, but I would prefer to see a better mix of Sig Vehicle and Piloting talents in an all new career. So 1 Duplicate here in Tactician, then a Detective (bring them in alive) and a Pirate Hunter

Spy already has 2 Duplicates, showing the broad skill base of Spy's in general, so I hope there are no more duplicates there. I'm hoping for a Cell Leader, a Ranged Specialist and an Under Cover.

Psyched for this book to be announced!

No wookies yet in AOR and this would be the place to introduce them i think.

He likely means not really in regards to it being random. Just because they aren't what you thought doesn't mean there isn't some reason behind each species being selected it. In most cases though there is some logic behind why a species gets into a book. In some cases it may not be the most obvious of choices, such as say putting a Bith in a book just because we see them as an entertainer, but there appears to be some logic. And I'm pretty sure they've stated as much a time or two when asked on the Order 66 podcast.

Onto other things, I wasn't expect a career book. I was honestly expecting another adventure book but I'll accept this.
