Fly Casual but Fly Smart, list building article

By dwhite87, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi, I am a casual X-Wing pilot who loves building wonky lists like five Scyks or a fat Jek Porkins or triple Tie Defenders!

I've always owned the components for competitive ship builds but that's never appealed to me. Where's the fun in flying something good? I want to win with my own creations!

Well, recently had the chance to fly some good ships and I wrote an article about that experience and about list building thoughts. I think this will be a useful read for anyone who also refuses to play competitive ships.

Cool. Thanks for the link.

I appreciate the weirdos who try out funky lists. I like to do that too, except it usually ends up badly.

Nice write up man. The guys in my group often tell me I'm not a special butterfly and to play in the meta. I don't listen to them often but I often pay the price for not! That's not to say that if you enjoy flying something unique you shouldn't. There's always room for the casual guys. But "winning lists" are so for a reason. Even if most of us don't share the same play skill as those that win with "the lists" they still perform well and with synergy. :)

I worry you risk losing something here though. Yes there are winning lists, and there are teams that will not work, but

I have found that there are many unique lists, often involving aspects of "the lists" that fare just as well or better in the hands of their users. I believe a vital component of the game is creativity, allowing for a slightly unorthodox, but often elegant or effective strategy, that is both less predictable and more fun.

I still love to experiment but my lists will now contain 75% proven ships. A solid foundation will allow me to always be in the game and that is more fun than being tabled
