Indeed... I've simply custom-painted my Tool in Black with Aubresh markings, because it lets me disassemble it and hit the backside with a layer of Black Spray and then Varnish every once in a while when it starts getting too flexy...
Brainstorming: Alternatives for the maneuver tool?
Its not my tool Im concerned with, it's others. Some are so flabby their maneuvers arent even close to what the knotch is suppose to be.

Before a tournament round begins, any player may request that a single range ruler, maneuver tool, and/or each other’s dice be shared for the duration of the round. Any decisions are subject to review by a marshal or a judge.
Personally, I take great satisfaction in seeing my opponent caaarefully set the tool, slooowly move his ship... and then take his hands away too quick and knock over three other things.
