Bloodline - worth the read

By whafrog, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I have to say, Claudia Gray's novel Bloodline is one of the few Star Wars books worthy of the name "novel". I thoroughly enjoyed it. It does a great job of setting up the backstory for The Force Awakens, the movie makes a lot more sense to me now. I don't know how much of the novel was a retrofit, but it certainly feels seamless, and if it was all planned out, it raises my opinion of the Star Wars story group significantly. If this is where we're going in the future, my misgivings are somewhat assuaged.

Kylo Ren was especially mysterious to me, his childish behaviour in the movie made no sense. Kylo makes no appearance in the novel, but there are hints that some of the events and "revealed secrets" in the novel must have had a huge impact.

The characters and their motivations are well fleshed out and, unusual for Star Wars literature, each character has their own voice. She captures Leia and Han to a T, doing a great job of diving into their emotions and how their past still affects them.

There is a lot of politics in the book (which I appreciate), but plenty of action as well. But it's the kind of action I like: short, to the point, exciting, and not overdone. If you're looking for lists of X-Wing parts, or 5 pages of description for 3 seconds of action, seek elsewhere.

I hope they continue to include Ms Gray in their author lineup, right now she's the best they have.

Glad to hear it. Currently am waiting for my Public Library to get it.

Have you read all the other new canon books?

I only ask as Lost Stars has been my favourite, and am wondering how you would rate it comparitively?

I bought this one back on Saturday, but I haven't started it yet since I'm still in the middle of Deaths of Tao . I'm glad to hear that it's good, because most of the new novels haven't really thrilled me.

Im about half way through. Excellent so far. I think I like lost stars better though, although my favourite of all the new cannon books is Dark Disciple.

I haven't finished it yet, but so far I agree with whafrog. I actually get sucked into this non-RPG Star Wars-book, first time in years...

I really enjoyed Lost Stars, I think this is as good or better. The pacing is a bit quicker, but some of that is due to not having to explain past references for characters like Leia.

I guess I'll be going to the bookstore today.

And the whole thing takes place 6 years before TFA, laving 24 years for thrawn and old EU stuff to get reintroduced. :D

That is really the best part about it.

I've been listening to a lot of the newer novels as audiobooks, glad to hear that there's some quality out there. I'm halfway through Lost Stars and Bloodlines is next, then I'm caught up with everything that isn't a young reader's novel.

Thus far they've been pretty good, although they use the same narrator a lot so I'm starting to hear repetitions in his voices, which gets really confusing at times. A certain accent & inflection was used for a bad guy in one book and a good guy in another, it can leave one a little confused!

Honestly, the young reader's novels are better than many of the other offerings. Even the ones set around the Rebels show are good.

Hm, good to know. I'd been avoiding them because they're not offered in audiobook format (that I see) but I'll put them on the list.

I have to second the children /young adult novels they have all been good

And the best part, they can be read in an afternoon.

I want afternoons like yours! I stick to audiobooks because I can tune in while I do the afternoon's tasks.

This IS the book I'm looking for.....

So far I've been happy to just look online for details, but Bloodlines is the first book I've genuinely felt inclined to buy. Guess I best get to it then :)
