Boston Regionals AAR

By reegsk, in Star Wars: Armada

I agree with Maturin. My original posts we written not knowing if this was oversight or intentional. The fact that you personally brought your identity into the public eye proves it's the former, at least in my mind. Like I said, could OE or ECM have affected the outcome? Maybe. And had I won, I could have played someone third round who could have trashed me, or I could have squeaked out a victory and you could have gotten a 10-0. I think you're being honest here, and that's a big deal to me. I found you quite amicable during our game, and you looked legitimately remorseful when we discovered the OE oversight after the match. So if my earlier posts cast doubt upon your character, I apologize for that, as it was not my intent.

As to the trophy and the bye, don't worry about it. I was hoping to place top eight and get those dice. I walked away with the coin, too, so I'm happy. Keep the trophy. Maybe if we're knowingly go to the same event in the future, you can bring it along and we'll throw down over it. But as it stands, I wouldn't feel right having it. I did better than I expected, and there's a distinct chance you would have still won even without the mishaps. If the TO gets back to you and says something different, we can go with that, but given your honesty here, I'm willing to let things stand as-is.

This thread confirms all the reasons I love the Armada community. You guys all rock.

First off: good on both of you for having a solid attitude about this, and staying civil. That's what this hobby should be all about.

Second off: I know what it's like to run into some weirdness ("Was that cheating, or a mistake? Should I have said something?") and had it sour a tournament day. For me, it was X-Wing Nats last year. Had a guy doing some hinky stuff, chalked it up to exhaustion and simple mistakes on his part, and then when I was chatting with a buddy I heard he'd been doing that same stuff all day (starting in the first round of the tournament!). We let a TO know -- it was too late to do anything about either of our games, but we figured we'd pass the buck, y'know? -- and that was it...but it does leave a weird, lingering, kind of disappointment.

Third off: Congrats on a fun tournament, otherwise. It sounds like for the most part y'all had fun, and that's what really counts.

Mmm. very graceful.

The TO might have to do something about it though.

Now if you excuse I'm off to fume in my angry, "FLY CASUAL!!" aggressive manner about a thread I saw in Xwing. I'm really wondering if I should post or just... let it be.

We had a discussion like this about squadrons where I gave a pretty angry post, but then funny enough a lot of people here agreed with my aggressive fly casual stance. Still, was really bad of me though. My post was wayy more aggressive than it should have been.

But wow. This xwing thread has me going bonkers.

This thread confirms all the reasons I love the Armada community. You guys all rock.

I'll admit, I am impressed. This is not the direction I expected this thread to go at all, and it's more mature and fair than any I've seen on similar topics in other games. Godwin's law hasn't even been proven yet.

Sometimes it's like Armada players don't even know how to Internet!!

Thanks for owning up bigtmac68, I'd just suggest you police yourself very closely in future as this level of tolerance is as unusual as it is commendable.

Would Warlords consider making a no-pictures version of their thing? Its really really distracting to those of us who want to see everything on the screen in one go!!!! I can't even see how many points I have yet to spend unless i scroll back up! Hello! Am I doing something wrong? This is crazy!

^_^

Just a quick update to anyone still following this. The TO got back to me and the submitted list matches up with what Troy had said - basically his list minus the accidentally included ECM card.

Still waiting for him to finish compiling the rest of the lists to add them to the data.

Cheers to all. Alls well that ends well.

I had more fun than all of them. I just asked myself, so, confirmed!

Fun and thematic (Rebel vs Imperial) games all with Tiffany, Adam and Travis. /salute

We all do things by mistake, armada is complex, competitions are long and stressful and we are encouraged to play quickly and that all drives mistakes... I know I've made some blinders, putting the wrong command on a ship ( the fighter command on a ship the other side of the board from my fighters) missing out using card effects, forgetting to use commands, doing the double click thing with a glad( spotted by my opponent luckily), driven ships clean of the board, knocked ships over ( a lot), activated the wrong ship ( when using multiples of the same) applied damage cards to the wrong ship.... I even picked up a ship cus it was in the way of my manouver tool without marking its position then realised what I had done and went whoops ( I was very tired), forgetting to set all my shields properly.......All sorts.

Just realised I have a brain like a sieve......

I edited the fleet information. If you read the entire post, you'll understand what I mean.

Round Two

Opponent - Name withheld, see below

Faction - Imperial

Commander - I think Motti, but I could be wrong here (EDIT - Motti)

List

- ISD I with a few upgrades with Leading Shots and XI-7s (possibly others, I can't remember right now) (EDIT - Relentless, Leading Shots, XI-7s, Gunnery Teams, Electronic Countermeasures [yes, I know, keep reading])

- Raider, no upgrades (EDIT - fielded as Raider-I, Raider-II card on the table)

- Gladiator with Demolisher and Ordnance Experts

Rhymer

Vader

Dengar

IG-88

Soontir Fel

2 x Firesprays

I had the lower bid (his list was 400pts [EDIT - actually 407]) and chose to go second. My opponent chose Precision Strike

Deployment and Round One

IMG_7646.jpg

Most obstacles were on the left of the board, and my opponent deployed top right, so I deployed a little closer this time, around the middle. Round One was pretty boring, with both of us flinging our squadrons forward.

Rounds Two and Three

IMG_7647.jpg

Here's where I lost the game. I think I was overconfident over how quickly I mopped up my previous opponent's squadrons, and saw a similar build here. I pushed my squadrons out too far, and my slow moving Vics couldn't catch up to get them back in Boosted Comms range. Worse still, they were clustered perfectly for flak shots from his Raider, who was positioned perfectly to catch my entire cluster. Ordnance Experts re-rolls put two damage on each squadron for two straight rounds. Combined with fire from his squads, pretty much all of my squadrons were dead by round three. My Bombers managed to plink a few shields off of his Raider and Gladiator before dying.

Rounds Four, Five and Six

IMG_7649.jpg

I was feeling a little defeated at this point, so I forgot to take pictures. His Raider had to maneuver in front of my entire line to avoid ramming the Glad, so I managed to take it out. His Glad managed to skirt around black dice range on my Vics to scoot around the flank. Between his bombers, ISD and Demo, I lost my right-most Vic (the only ship casualty of the day). I managed to force some damage through onto the ISD and get some Precision Strike card flips for tokens, but that was it.

End Result

I lost all of my squadrons and a single Vic, taking only the Raider and I think a few squadrons, but I managed to get a few tokens for points. Feeling especially defeated (I'll explain why in a moment) at this point, I didn't take good notes, so I don't remember what the scores were, but the final MoV was around sixty or so, leading to a 4-6.

Now, I was writing up a whole, long post about a few questionable things that my opponent did which I thought were shady, but could be innocent mistakes. But after digging in a little further, I realized that the guy either cheated his face off, or is the most forgetful player I have ever met. And I'm serious about this. I was kicking myself for missing some big things (like maneuvering my squadrons into a perfect killbox and missing the lack of OE upgrades). I put the onus on myself for missing things. But now I have to wonder if I could have won the round had I been more observant, and whether I lost because of an opponent that may have been cheating. Even worse, he won the tournament.

Here's what I noticed during/after the game:

- He wiggled the ships against the maneuver tool VERY aggressively, flexing it noticeably. I got suspicious when his Raider managed to double-arc Rhymer perfectly two turns in a row, and confirmed at the end of the game when I had to put my finger on the maneuver template to hold it in place, and more than once had to push his ship flush against the maneuver tool.

- He maneuvered his Glad into a perfect double-arc against my dying vic with two clicks on joint one and two clicks on joint two, which is only possible with a Nav dial, a Nav token and Nav Teams, none of which he had.

- You may notice his list included a naked Raider-I (he had the Raider-II card on the table) but my recap specifically mentions OE re-rolls against my squadrons. Yeah. . .I realized that after the game when we were totaling points. I asked the TO, but he said it was impossible to roll the game back that far.

- Just out of curiosity, as I was writing, I thought I'd double-check his points. First off, he spent 407. I couldn't remember his upgrades, but my handy pictures show all of them.

- He had ECMs on his ISD-I. You may note that an ISD-I has no Defensive Retrofit slot. This he definitely used in our game, and he was definitely rolling 3 Red, 2 Blue, 3 Black.

I'm curious to see if the list he turned in to the TO matched the one he actually used in our game.

So I suppose this is a cautionary tale. I'm used to shenanigans from my years of 40k and Warmahordes, but the Armada scene is so laid back and I'm pretty trusting anyway, so I was put off guard. Like the fear mongers say to get you suspicious of your neighbors - if you see something, say something.

Wait. . . the TO didn't invalidate the whole thing based on the fact that he was over points alone? I am confused on how this guy even made it past his his other opponents without flags being thrown up!

I am not condemning you at all I just don't understand how this was allowed. . .

The points/ECM thing wasn't realized until Sunday, when I was writing the AAR. By the time ECMs were used, I was already frazzled thinking I was going to take a big loss, so I didn't notice it. But when I zoomed in on the pictures to list the ship upgrades, that's when I noticed it.

The only thing brought to the TO's attention at the time was the Ordnance Experts problem. His logic on letting it stand mainly centered around his experience as a Magic judge, and the fact that FFG doesn't give very clear regulations on how to handle a situation like that.
