Making Echo Work

By MortalPlague, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So I usually fly Empire, and I really like the TIE Phantom. I usually fly Whisper as the more viable pilot, with VI to put her up to 9. I want to try flying Echo, and I've got a tournament coming up. Here's what I've got in mind:

100 points

TIE Phantom - Echo (30)

+ Veteran Instincts (1)

+ Fire Control System (2)

+ Intelligence Agent (1)

+ Advanced Cloaking Device (4)

Total: 38

TIE Interceptor - Carnor Jax (26)

+ Push The Limit (3)

+ Autothrusters (2)

Total: 31

TIE Advanced Prototype - The Inquisitor (25)

+ Push The Limit (3)

+ TIE /v1 Title (1)

+ Authothrusters (2)

Total: 31

The idea is to use the intelligence agent to keep Echo out of arc of anything higher PS than her, and try to use Carnor Jax to draw aggro (and deny using tokens against Echo). Also, all three are on PS8, which gives me some movement flexibility.

Alternately, I could sub out either Carnor or Inquisitor for Zertik Strom with ATC and Predator to shut down the R1 bonus on a lot of ships (and put down pretty regular damage). It also frees up one point for an initiative bid. And Zertik has slightly better damage potential and a little more tankiness than either Carnor or the Inquisitor.

Thoughts?

My thoughts first are if you aren't experienced in flying Echo, don't start flying her in a tournament setting. Using the different template for decloaking takes a lot of getting used to, and can really mess up some players, especially ones used to playing Whisper. That being said, I think Echo has the most flexibility and can really catch opponents off guard for where she ends up. Again, most people aren't used to playing against Echo either, so they won't expect some of her movements.

On to the list, it looks really solid to me. You may consider since you aren't at the PS9 level of using Stygium Particle Accelerator instead. The free evade on the decloak can help against those ace pilots. Though I suppose maybe you just fly it so you aren't taking the shots from PS9 with Echo. Either way, something to consider, as it frees an additional 2 points. Everything else looks solid and what to expect. I'm really tired, so I can't pick it apart and see what interactions might work better, but perhaps later, after sleep.

There was a list posted here a while ago called the hateful 8s

Echo (30)

-VI (1)

-FCS (2)

-Agent Kallus (2)

-ACD (4)

Total:39

Carnor Jax (26)

-PTL (3)

-Royal Guard (0)

-AT (2)

-Stealth Device (3)

Total:34

Omega Leader(21)

-Juke (2)

-Comms relay (3)

Total: 26

Squad total: 99

Omega Leader in place of the Inquisitor is an interesting idea. The fact that it comes with a bid and gives Echo a bit more defense could be a good thing.

I could also swap out PTL in favor of Juke for the Inquisitor, which is very dangerous with Jax in the mix. Either way, I'll get to try this tomorrow morning and see how it goes. :)

I realize Echo's a tricky one to break out for a tourney, but it's a smaller one and I've already got some of the spring kit prizes. I can't think of a better time to get used to flying that particular phantom than with five matches in a row. :)

I just started flying Echo and she is becoming my favorite ship in the game. Opponents have absolutely no idea where you are gonna end up. I fly her with IA as well and it is a life saver, cause if Echo cant get a shot off on her intended target then she is a sitting duck. IA lets you see if a shot is indeed possible, if not then dont decloak and token up. She is also a legit blocker with her IA. Been having lot of fun with her. Record is 3-1 with her so far. Lost to a Z ordnance swarm. Echo was still alive though, and Z's were out of missiles. Fully believe she could have solo'd the remaining (as my plan was to sacrifice my other ships so Z's were out of ordance and Echo can pick them off), but game went to time before that happened, lol. My fault as I was taking WAY too long thinking about her moves. She makes my brain hurt sometimes.

Good luck with your list. Update post with your results :D

I signed up to the Reddit RXT S2 tournament with the OP's Echo in my list just so I have to figure out how she works. From my test flights, it's very different!

If you can free up 18 to 20 points it might be worth sticking a Scanner Shuttle in there when Imp Vets comes out (TIE shuttle with either two intel agents or an intel Agent and something else like Tactician or Fleet Officer). That frees Echo's crew slot up for something that'll keep her alive. Kallus or Recon Specialist are usually good calls.
