Has the Gozanti Cruiser replaced the Decimator?

By SlaveofChrist, in X-Wing

Hello my fellow X-wing Miniatures Fans! Hope things are going well for everyone :D.

So I have recently decided to embark into the new land of Epic/Huge ships to add to my current collection and boy am I excited to fly these new MONSTERS!!! lol :P

I got my new Rebel Transport two days ago and I am still waiting for the remaining 3 epic ships to arrive next week, but I've been playing on Fab's Squadron Generator with some new builds to get familiar with the new ships and I noticed something very interesting that I would like to get the communities opinion on.

I noticed that both of the Decimator's and Gozanti Cruiser's cost are exactly the same at 40 points . I find this very interesting as while, yes granted, they are totally different ships in completely different ship class's (large vs. huge ships) there are some very interesting similarities.

  • They both have turret attacks at 3 dice (granted the Gozanti does have to spend one energy to do so).
  • They both have agility values at zero
  • Both of their combined hull & shields are almost the same (16 vs. 14)
  • Both have the target lock ability
  • Both can carry at least two crew members (and therefore Emperor Palpatine)
  • Both can only do one attack per round

I realise that some of you may be scratching your head at this (or wondering if I've been sniffing too much airplane glue ) I present a reasonable "why?" to make this comparison.

Assuming you are playing Epic mode, and you are trying to maximize your points (i.e. "best bang for your buck") you look at some of your ships and see that you have two bruisers to choose from (not including the MONOLITH Raider ) and you see that the basic cost for the Decimator and the Gozanti Cruiser are essentially the same. Here are some of the advantages of the Gozanti over the Decimator that may seem appealing to you:

  • You can regenerate shields!!! (yippee! Now the Imperials are no longer in the dark ;))
  • You can even repair hull damage, including critical hits!!! (double yippee!!!)
  • Darth Vader can (potentially) be used every single round adding one critical hit to your attack while healing the damage from his effect
  • You could have one "evade token" (reinforce action) for every single attack (vs. one, Ysanne Isard)
  • You can carry and protect up to 4 TIE ships
  • You can smash & destroy other large and small ships through ramming (and scream "Banzai!!!" while doing it)

Forgive my zealousness, and silliness, but I thought it was a pretty cool idea to use the Gozanti Cruiser instead of the Decimator for the same basic cost while being able to regenerate shields, hull points and use Vader every turn!!!

Thoughts???

(P.S. - Has anyone considered buying two Gozanti Cruiser's to field instead of one Gozanti and one Raider by chance? I'm debating buying a 2nd one...thanks and God bless :)!)

Decimator was never popular in epic to begin with so...yes.

Doesnt the Gozanti have to buy a turret weapon, so increases the cost? Albeit usually you are buying gear or upgrades anyway on both, so I'm not saying this makes it worse than the Decimator

A good point.

Strictly speaking, yes you are correct. It is 40 points on a Decimator, to 45 points for a Gozanti Cruiser to both have a turret attack at 3 dice, and it also takes 1 point of energy to fire the weapon (which could be denied by multiple ion strikes). And not to mention, the comparison was to the "lowest" level Pilot - Patrol Leader. There are indeed advantages to the Decimator over the Gozanti Cruiser (moving first, smaller ship, more maneuverable, elite abilities, one extra crew, lots of extra modifications, etc...). There could even be an argument in favour of fielding both ships (a good argument, in my opinion).

I just thought in relation to 300points, for a very small point variance, the Gozanti might be a better choice for the same cost vs. much better field options and much better resilience in light of being able to recover shields and hull points. Hope that helps, Cheers and God bless ^_^.

I have to agree with Hobo on this.
If you are playing Epic the Decimator is a huge waste of points. The Gozer is both economical and efficient especially when working in pairs. Two with either the dual turrets or one of them with Ordnance Tubes will obliterate any small base ships especially if you catch them between both Gozers.
The Decimator, on the other hand, has very limited customization by comparison. Which is likely to be more trouble than it's worth.
Honsetly, If I could use my Gozer in standard I would.

How long does an Epic game take to play generally?

The main advantage of the Decimator is in speed and agility. It can make hard turns and carry an Engine Upgrade, while the Gozanti turns like a whale.

Boy, do I agree with you on this one!!! :D

Depends. Usually 70 minute rounds.

How long does an Epic game take to play generally?

Depends on the players familiarity with their ships. Most players play more regular than epic and so spend a bit longer on things. I played a massive 600 point game a few months ago that took part of the afternoon and most of the evening. A regular 300 Epic game could probably be done comfortably in 3 hours. Maybe less.

For us 2-3 hours

That maybe counting the set up and clean up

Decimator is terrible in epic. I have only ever used it for the visual of having huge, large and small ships out there together.

Huge ship turbolasers go well against zero agility. Large groups of small ships do the same. I don't think I have ever recovered the points invested in it.

Considering that the Gozanti cant be in regional/national/worlds tournaments I would say, no.
