HELP Can you increase the dice amount on an upgrade cards

By Barry Harker, in X-Wing Rules Questions

For some reason.

My freind now thinks he can roll extra dice.

For instance......

Twin laser turret with Kavel.

"when attacking a ship outside your firing ark, 1 additional dice roll"

He argues that he can roll extra attack dice on a secondary weapon with kavils ability

Twin turret laser is 3 dice

He says he can roll 4 dice

I thought the amount of dice roll for red dice can not be changed.

It states 3 in red......

I thought that was it.

No more no less.

Help settle an argument please

Thank-you all.

Barry.

If you couldn't change the number of red dice, what would be the point in Kavil's ability?

Basically your friend is right - follow the instructions on Kavil's pilot card

Yes he can, as long as you are outside of his firing arc. If you are inside his arc though he must revert to using 3, even if he is using the TLT.

So yes if you are behind him when he uses his TLT he will be able to shoot with 4 dice, twice. He can only get a maximum of 2 damage though, (1 per shot as per the rules described on TLT).

There is no rule stating that the amount of red dice cant be changed by the effects of another card.. basically any card could possibly have an ability that breaks any rule in the game, but only for that 1 card that allows it.

Another example of this is Zeta Leader who has the ability "When attacking you may take a stress to roll 1 additional attack dice".

Thanks guys.

I like the fact you can do this.

As I will use it myself.

Just never thought you could change the secondry weapon dice rolls.

Like the range bonus.

I was wrong.

Thank you.

From the rules reference page 2 - emphasis mine:

GOLDEN RULES

If a rule in this guide contradicts the Learn to Play booklet, the rule in this guide takes priority.

Card abilities can override the rules listed in this guide.

Mission rules can override both card abilities and rules from this guide. If a card ability or mission effect uses the word “cannot,” that effect is absolute and cannot be overridden by other effects.

Like the range bonus.

Once again, Card abilities take the priority.. take a look at Talonbane Cobra's ability - "You may double the effect of your range bonuses" .. in other words gets an additional 2 attack dice at range 1 and an additional 2 evade dice at range 3 instead of the usual 1.

Any rule can be broken by the cards.

Thanks guys.

You don't get range bonuses for secondaries, but it says nothing about any other bonuses, which apply as written on their various cards.

Why do I never see anyone fly this ship? 5 Dice at range one with the possibility of more with certain upgrades sounds like fun...

Talonbane? Too squishy. He dies extremely easily, not least because of the aforementioned secondary weapons not giving range bonuses thing - he's just as squishy as any other 2-agi ship to torps, cannons, and turrets. Which is very.

The only thing secondary weapons don't care about regarding dice is range modifications. No extra defense for R3 and no extra attack for R1. Beyond that they are just like any other attack.
