Tried some in Proxy in a few games today. They do bring some nice new options and some unexpected hardship.
Flotillas - Which faction won wave 3?
I was on the recieving end of Bomber command center with only 4 squadrons of fighters defending my Imperial Fleet during game 1. I couldn't compete with 6 flights of B-wings and 2 X-wings getting re-rolls on their attacks. Pretty much meant at least 2 damage every time they rolled. This was used on a custom Quasar Fire-Class Escort Carrier with Expanded Comms.
I myself was using Repair Crews on 2 Gozanti like ships. The ships carrying them were custom Imperial Light Cruisers. Although a more capital combat oriented then the Gozanti, it still gave a feel for the ability. 2 of these flotillas stayed close to my Victory-II with Dominator, Wulf and a Tractor Beam. As he took damage he repaired his shields with engineering commands to keep the Dominator dominating, and the two Light Cruiser flotillas helped by peeling off two damage cards a turn. Essentially I was playing the Rebel game of mitigating much of the damage I was taking. Combined with Motti as my Commander, it was a hard slog for the Rebels in game 2.
So in the end although customs ships were involved we got to see a small part of what Wave III offers the game today. Exciting stuff.
Let's compare apples to oranges and see what's best!
Though...I feel for squadron play Tarkin giving you +3 and Boosted Comms is fantastic because Boosted Comms suits floatilas.
Edited by Trizzo2As Snipafist said, it is still going to be a very real choice between Yavaris and Medium Transport with EHB. Yes the Transport is far cheaper, but Yavaris double tapping with 3 B-wings in a single activation is just bazonkers. And choice is great. The game wouldn't be any fun if there were no interesting choices to make in list building.
I say even with Yavaris you still want to try and squeeze a bomber command in.

Holy ****! I gotta try that now
What are you guys on about? Its not a choice between yavaris and flotillas, its between assault frigates and flotillas....
Gr75 - 34pts
Adar Tallon
Boosted Comms
Bright Hope
Gr75 - 38pts
Toryn Farr
Expanded Hanger
Bomber command
Nebulon escort - 65pts
Vet Cap
Yavaris
Total - 137pts for 7 activations not including tokens and ALL the shenanighans, as well as a secure admiral ship in bright hope.
With 133pts in squadrons and a 30 pt admiral, this leaves 100pts for pure ship killing. Carrier list with actual punch.
i think the new commanders will give just as much to this game as the ships will.
General Cracken is a Montifferrat on steroids. Every attack on every ship going faster than speed 3 is obstructed. CR90s, MC30s, GR75s and Nebs, will get huge advantage of this, and AKMKIIs could also benefir (i usually fly mine at spd 2 tho)
General Tagge is no slouch himself which gives defense tokens back on the 3rd and 5th turns. This could return a brace token when you need it most on the last few turns of keeping your ship alive. also could give evades back to a needa enabled ship which could make trc's more potent in the 3rd and 5th rounds when you can burn them without worrying about losing it for good.

The big opportunity cost for me is Flight Controllers.
To be precise, I'm not exactly sure it's a choice BETWEEN GR75s and Yavaris, but there comes a point at which you simply have too many squadron activations and too little actual firepower. Current Rebel squadron lists are running mixed role carrier/warships which allow them to do a bit of both. It's going to be tough and probably counter-productive to include both Yavaris and Independence (or insert other specialized carrier title) as well as a bunch of GR75s, so at one point or another I suspect Rebels are going to need to decide which elite carrier is going to be the star of their fleet and support that ship with the salt-of-the-earth little GR75s for pushing everything else around. Given most Rebel squad builds I see nowadays are trying to get the most mileage out of aces and Scurggs/B-Wings due to the current tech that allows Rebels to break individually powerful squadrons (Adar Tallon, Yavaris, Rieekan), we could see a Rebel squadron sub-archetype that just goes for generic spamming with Bomber Command Center, but I guess we'll see. Suffice it to say, it seems like sticking to the wave two archetype completely won't likely be of great benefit to the GR75, but that's not a vote against it by any means.
In messing around with list building, I think the Rebel flotillas are like a one or two include, max, at least from what I can tell. I think 3 of them will be too many points for ships that can't roll attack dice except vs squadrons.
But man, that one or two include has some shenanigans!
Some great new options for both fleets.
Assault Gozantis + Vader means no one will ever pick your Opening Salvo objective, and they should be pretty good for firelanes too.
Rebel transports can carry better squadron support upgrades and push a lot more squadrons with better responsiveness for less points than Nebulons or even assault frigates I think.

True for about 4 months and then they will be flash in the pan sort of stuff only used in causal games, scenarios, and higher point games. These things won't find a way into competitive play for more than a few months. I could be wrong, but the most we will see is one as a rammer to hold a ship in place for a double tap like a temporary tractor beam sacrificing 20 some points for a larger victim. It will be game and wiz kid stuff and everyone will lap it up until the fad is over and they are tired of the silliness of ISD being checked by a flotilla. If you tempor your excitement over these tiny little SKU, you'll won't be as dissappointed when they quickly out live their usefulness. You'll all have to use them because you'll be preordained 3-4 per side since there isn't anything else to buy. Lap it up.
Didn't you quit?
I think it will create more bomber builds for the rebels. Might see a resurgence in tactics utilizing squadrons more often. And you know what? If they are quasi fire ships, then that's ok too. Not like there isn't a precedent for that in history.
Nope, just quite buying anything new. I still play with the old stuff until it gets boring. Likely a year from now. Most people in my area have moved onto other things which is true of the majority of regions I've polled. But hey, I let you be the first to know lady.
In terms of escort carrier use, rebs get more out of a squadron point than imps, IMO. But, the imps get more value out of a cheap activation than rebs do.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This so much. I'm way more comfortable with Vader now as I can go second and have more red dice, compare to say Raiders as second. I have x2 Assaults in a current build. What I like is these can push the fighter screen around leaving the ISD to be more effective in its own right.

This so much. This is why VSDS are still a valid choice. An ISD bomber list could conceivably drop a VSD because they carry FC and want activations but VSD bomber lists remain the best Flight Controllers platform. Adding that extra dice to IG, Vader, Swarm ships is strong.

Was going to say, I'd be interested in your sources here. The majority of the people that I have spoken to in my local meta are excited about these. Some were sceptical initially, but now feel that they have brought some interesting new options for their fleets. They're not going to be expensive, so will allow people like myself to focus on collecting ships from waves one and two, and, even if the flotillas themselves end up not being used too much (which I think is unlikely, but we can agree to disagree), the upgrades each pack is bringing are still substantial for existing ships. Frankly, I'm pleased with the relief for my wallet, and I know many people who feel the same.
Seriously mate, if you're that convinced this game is a sinking ship, why not leave the rest of us to go down with it? If this forum is anything to go by (let alone regionals and store championships, which in my area at least are going from strength to strength), there'll be many of us left having fun long after you've gone.

Slicer Tools man. They're about to be the ultimate fire ship tool. They give you the horrible choice between wasting your fire on a 26 point nuisance or allowing them to badly mangle your carefully constructed command stack. I can't wait for these things to hit the table. FFG has retroactively made the Battle of Endor ten times more awesome by giving GR-75s an actual purpose for being in that battle.

You all having difficulty squeezing in a fleet at 400 points. There just is no place for this things long term. They will be one offs and FF will sell tons of them because there is nothing else to buy for year(s). Your opinion would be valid if you had waited until the latest articles before forming and articulating your statements. As it's stands, you gave us your hilariously immature reaction well before we knew anything about what these ships would do to the competitive balance of the game. Now you're just trolling and your opinion is worthless.

And Quantum Storm, just for that extra push when you need it.
Of course, when it is done.

No, I instantly realize the stuff stunk. The reaction was spot on. You fan boys are use to goose stepping you don't understand the forest for the trees. Seriously, flottilas for a year to year and a half. Sorry you can't see the obvious. Sorry you're and Sanpfist etc. are so far behind the curve your judgement is clouded.
