My cloaking device is much better than yours...

By IG88E, in X-Wing

No, just the opposite. Although I extremely love this illicit upgrade, it's more a cloaka device. My cloaking device explodes far more often then statistics should allow. Is it constructed by glitterstimmed Jawas?

Where do you have a cloaking device? For what, and when do you activate it (first round?) ?

If you fly yourself into a spot of trouble, cloaking to help you scooby doo out of there is probably the best use for it.

Given the power of ACDless cloak, it shouldn't have the draw back at all (or should be 1 point)

It's gone on palob to help get him into annoying positions where focusing him isn't the best idea despite how tempting a target he is

Still a very disappointing bit of bad design

It's good. The more failures you ratchet up, the more good rolls the dice's memory will store. One day, you. Will. Be. On. Fire.

So scum cloak = Pepsi or doctor pepper?

Look at it from this point of view. MOST illicit upgrades are single use items.

Hotshot Blaster - one use.

Inertial Dampners - one use.

Glitterstim - one use.

Dead Man's Switch - definitely one use (unless you're Tel Trevura).

Feedback Array would be the exception that proves the rule, and even that is very limited in it's application (unless you're feeling particularly suicidal and/or Tel Trevura).

So, consider the Illicit Cloaking Device to be a one-use item to help you through the initial joust, get you into a good position (or the hell out of dodge), and you're less likely to be disappointed with it.

Get more than one use out of it, and it's a bonus.

An overcosted bonus

An overcosted bonus

In your (fickle) opinion.

I'd prefer to take it over Hot Shot Blaster and Dead Man's Switch however, which both have the same cost.

Probably over Glitterstim as well.

There are some ships, namely the HWKs and Guri, that benefit enough from that one guaranteed jump into range that the 2 points are justified. On other ships it mostly is garbage, but thats fine. Its a highly specific upgrade that is great in certain spots and rewards you for recognizing them.

I could teach you, but I'd have to charge.

Cloaking is awesome on talonbane. You don't need to activate it first round, just the round before you engage (even if you miscalculate this you should be at range 3 getting 6+ dice) then use it to ahoot into range 1. If it doesn't break, great, but if

It does its doe its job anyway

I agree that cloaking device is underrated (even when as reliable as some contraceptives). Especially in Ordnance and TLT meta to overcome enemy range 2-3.

When you pair it with Stygmium P. Accelerator you habe the cost of an extra shield

My TIE phantom has been engineered in the maw with maximum precision, so it never explodes.... :P

I've really enjoyed using it on Talonbane & Guri. With Guri, it helped me sneak in behind the Ghost and into it's blind spot (the Phantom had undocked).

HSB is actually more expensive at 3 pts instead of 2.

IMO, it is over-drawbacked. It is both Limited and has a chance to fail, along with its 2 point price tag. If it was limited OR could explode, 2 pts I would be fine with. Most of the time I would still want glitter or ID, but it would be more competitive. Instead it is both Limited AND can explode for 2 pts, so it basically only goes on ships I have no intention of attack with anyway. I could just suck (very likely), but every time my Cloaking Device gets used, my ship (usually Guri) still gets blown up by a couple shots.

Its very niche, only being worth while on certain pilots, and even then it has solid competition. Although I would understand how FFG would be wary of it being overpowered.

That said, using it sparingly is the best way to go about it.

Being a unique upgrade you generally would want it on a unique pilot, but not always the case (R3-A2 for example). These pilots cloak appears to work great on.

  • Guri the free focus works great with autothrusters if up against turrets if you find them out of your arc.
  • Palob The only ship which taking SPA for the modification is not a bad idea. It only works as a panic button (a bit expensive) but it works great if you find someone inside range 1. 4 agility with evade and any green toekn you steel is tough to get past.
  • Talonbane Cobra Kamakazi raids with this one. Equip EU and you can cover some extreme distances with this to close in and get those procket like attacks. It is a little tricky to survive but if you can get another use out of it you can use it as an escape after the 1st attack run, but you will want EU for when it goes out.

My cloaking device can walk right through the door, with a feeling so pure, it's got you screaming back for more!

Any other SOAD fans immediatly have the same reaction as me?

I like the Device on Guri, only put it up when you get close, ie close to range 3. I like to use it yo make her go 7 forward, ie 2 from device, 4 from 4 straight and the 2 ship bases you have from doing 2 straight maneuvers. You can be in someones backline very quick, go after a Palp Shuttle etc. Given her normal build, thats 5 Green dice, a sensor jammer and Autothrusters. If it lasts more than a turn then awesome, but as everyone has said, illicits are generally jury rigged bits of kit that arent too stable.

Decloak 2 forward and then do a 5 speed K-turn is one of the best maneuvers in a Klingon (AKA Kihrax).

i have udes it twice..... once it held for the whole game second game it blew up first round. It added that unknown random factor and was a bit of fun

No real input here, but the last tournament my brother and I went to, the only game his CD DIDN'T explode first turn was when he didn't use it for an entire match.

He's also the kind of guy that rolls hits anytime he comes into contact with an obstacle, so I'm assuming it's more of a personal issue.

It was pretty funny when I called it at the beginning of the night, and even better when the busted thing still helped him win an early game due to perfect early positioning for Talonbane.

I run the cloaking device on guri in one of my lists. It's only there for rounds when I think she's in danger of taking a lot of attacks and want the extra defense. If it helps me for that one round then explodes, doesn't bother me if it kept her alive. I think I've also used it once or twice when I was in a bad position and wanted to be able to reposition before moving the next round (where again, even if it explodes I still get to decloak).

In place of Autothrusters? I think I'd prefer a non-action bonus when you're at range 3 or out of arc (which she can be, in a furball or vs. turrets).

Cloaking is illicit not modification
