Loss of local support

By Arowmund, in Star Wars: Armada

Well, it's official. Yesterday I was saddened to hear that the last two shops local to me will no longer be carrying Armada or Imperial Assault products. They simply do not move, so the decision was made to ax them.

I can't say I'm surprised, as the closest shop that hosted either for gaming is a 2 hour drive away (one way) and they have also announced the end of support for both titles.

I'm not saying this is any kind of doom or sign of the times to come, just sighing and sharing my frustration.

In my country (Croatia) the stores carry and organize X-Wing tournaments, but are very very shy about Armada. In fact, the stores only sell the core set which is crazy. There's no reason to buy just the core set if you wish to play this.

There's little chance of there ever being a tournament scene here so all I have are casual games with friends with me supplying both fleets

I talked to an Italian player and he said that their situation is rather bleak, as well, with only a few cities hosting tournaments on a regular basis.

Croatia lacks a distributor which explains that one

Italy however, https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/more/fantasy-flight-games-professional/#Italyhas a distributor in http://www.giochiuniti.it/ who as far as I can tell seem to be organising regionals.

One of our local stores gets ~15 X-wing players for their weekly gathering. Im lucky if I can find someone to play Armada with, and our major Armada tourneys often get <6 players. Im seriously considering leaving Armada for XWing, just because of the player base. :(

Its a little bit the same up here in North East England. There are two shops within a 40 min drive of my home, who stock Armada and host tourneys. My first tourney saw 8 players (this was probably a year ago) the last tourney i went to had 4, the one before that 5.... there's just not enough players on the scene it seems which is a big shame. It just appears to be dying a slow death :(

Our regional down in Sheffield next weekend has sold out so that's great news, I'm very much looking forward to that.

The situation in italy is rather bleak.. in the whole of Turin (not a small city) it was just the two of us..

In my province they only play magic: the gathering and some warhammer fans have survived, but not much else.

You can't compare it to X-Wing since they are different models really. X-Wing is geared to those cheap players you want to playamy games fast. Armada on the other hand costs more in the startup which limits the player count.

I am just hoping FFG has realized his and is working on a faction core set. Even if it is just the basic core set split in 2.

Those are not bad turnouts for a new game like Armada.

I'm not comparing it at all to Xwing. I've never played Xwing nor really intend to. Armada is the first table top game i've taken up playing in nearly 15 years.

My comparison is with the number at local tourneys when I first started playing. Its declined with EVERY tourney I've attended. We have a guy turn up first timer at tourney gets hammered (like every first timer generally) next thing you see his stuff up for sale on FB. Its got to the point in my area where its the same 4 guys at the tourneys. :(

You've got tournaments? I have to drive 1-2 hours for them. Although I do have a store that sells it. We just can't get people in the store to play.

I'm hoping the local scene doesn't dry up for X Wing as well. That'd be unfortunate as well. We have had diminishing crowds the last few events as well. Maybe the timing with store championships has had people going for other events than the typical local ones.

Hmm, the game does very well in Quebec City, the store also organizes tournaments on a pretty regular basis, I just can't get there myself due to my work schedule. They're doing a great job convincing people to buy the game and an entire wall section is dedicated to Armada and X-Wing (both have the same store space)

Looks like I will see you there. :)

And yes same with stuff near me, was a lot of people, now lucky to get 4 at a Spring/Summer etc kit tournament.

And me, and Ceejlekabeejle...

So what you guys bringing? Dont worry about me, just trying to save face with Nebs.

i'm not at all surprised about Armada's lack of play. While the game is very good. 2 hr game play is very hard for a lot of people (myself included). It's much easier to sit down for 30-60 minutes to get a game in

as for imperial assault, is there anyone actually playing the games? it took a while but our area finally built up a small group of regular players (about 8 of us so far) and that basically took one guy the effort to start organized play in our area and a few of us jumped on board. With steady play we hope to continue to grow, but there definitely isn't any losses happening yet

Slovenia has http://www.crnaluknja.si if thats any help.

Unfortunately it doesn't. They don't carry much in terms of armada either, and their store is in the capital city of 400 thousand. Then again, my capital has about a million and no players.

The guys from Trieste told me they have to go to Modena, as I mentioned earlier which is 350 km or a 3 hour drive. That's way way too distant for sustainability of the game.

I live on the central coast of California. It's hard to get an Armada game going; all of the times I've played so far have been intro games for other people.

I can't say I'm surprised though; this area seems to only like the "popular" games, like Warhammer 40k, Malifaux, Warmachine, and X-Wing. The other games like Infinity, Firestorm, Dropzone/Dropfleet, Star Fleet Battles/Federation Commander, and this game seem to have solid communities in the neighboring areas (Monterey, Santa Barbara, the Central Valley).

Fortunately you can still get Armada stuff online. Get with your local players and make sure you make it to game days at these stores. As long as you use a quality game mat, Armada sells itself. Make sure the store manager hears you tell people they have to buy it online because no one there carries it.

that would be a ballsy move considering the store is giving you space to play

you'd be better off telling them to ask the store to put in a special order. The store is not going to say no to a sale. and if more people consistently keep asking about the product they may consider bringing in minimal product back to the shelves again

Reading you guys kind of depresses me though. I came to Armada after the Golem Arcana fiasco. If this game doesn't last more than 5 years, I swear I'll be crying in a corner.

I am really sorry to hear about the troubles in other areas. I can thankfully say that here, locally, we have a solid 10 players that are rabid for playing some Armada. If your area lacks in some, I think demoing games is the best way to get people into it. I was put off by the initial buy-in, but after actually playing the game I bought in that evening.

I've demo'd the game at the local gaming club several times guys want to try it but the buy in puts them off. Yet there happy to pay less for xwing core then MORE for all the ships ??????

I've even said to people use my models if you want to play I have at least two of everything for the game. Yet still can't get people to do that lol.

I think I'll put a gun to their heads next to get peeps to play lol

only 2 out of 8 states/territories in OZ get good numbers (more then 10) at a tournament sadly the state I live in is not one of them. the best turn out at a SC was 8, regionals had 11. 2 players came from one of the states with higher number of players. 1 I dragged, another came along hoping to win dice by default (he did). that's 7 "locals" who really wanted to be there

Im trying to build more players in my local area but its not easy. I think the problem's are

  1. Price. But when you compare it to X Wing yes the core is cheaper but you have to spend a lot more money on expansions to be able to play the game competitively. like the Tie Advanced.
  2. The time it takes to play a game. for me this is no problem
  3. Lack of META. yes some list types are popular but unlike X wing you cant gust pick up a "fat Han" list and do well. This game has less ships but more diversity and a lot more long term tactical planning and I think this scares people away from the game
  4. Tournament scoring and structure. As our skills improve and players increases a lot of games among the skilled players are going to be close and when one of those skilled players gets paired up against a baby seal in the first round they will get a huge advantage against the other skilled players. this happened at our regionals 11 players with 3 skilled players and getting paired up against 3 of the weaker players round 1 giving them 10 10 9. the other 3 skilled players had byes and were wondering why did we use them. No Idea of how this can be fixed tho

these are the problems I see from a competitive player point of view. I know a lot of Armada product sells every store I go to they tell me sales in armada are not a problem. just for reasons un know people don't play the game in tournaments or in store

I live in a town with 40,000 people - we have a small Armada community - four regular players, maybe a half dozen occasional players.

Our problem is the the local game store often decides to run an Armada day and gives very little notice - less than 24 hours on occasion.

Our gaming group has other priorities (work, families, church, etc) - we can't just drop everything to go play games. We need regular events with plenty of notice.

Like one of the other posters above, I played one demo game and was hooked - placed an order right away.

things like this send me bat s*** crazy it says to me that the store does not want to support the game and only put on events because they realize they have free day and need to put something on

That's just total disorganisation on the part of the store and would send me bat **** crazy also. I'd be very inclined to be having a word with the store and tell them to get their admin out of their arses and organise things properly.

Thats no good to man nor beast having a tourney setup with 24hrs notice.
