Another day, another $50 X-wing package

By Boris_the_Dwarf, in X-Wing

Wait.... So.... You're complaining you have to pay for 2 ships in an expansion... which costs the same as buying 2 ships of these sizes in two separate expansions.... Because it costs more than one single ship expansion....

Seems like a sound argument.

Cmon guys, don't hate on your veterans box that much! It's not like FFG is becoming the new PP or GW of tabletop game pricing!

It'll be coming out in - what, five months?

So, all that means is you need to save $10 from your paper round / pocket money per month until then and you'll be able to afford it when it hits the shelves!

It doesn't take a financial advisor to work this kind of thing out, you know.

I concur. I can remember a day in the late '90s when I was playing Magic: The Gathering, Decipher's Star Wars CCG and ICE's Lord of the Rings CCG all at the same time. Between the three, there was a new $150 set every month!. Talk about a cash outlay. Being down to one Wave and 1-2 small expansions PER YEAR seems down right slow and cheap.

When ICE went bankrupt and Decipher lost the SW license, I gave up M:TG and swore off all collectible games. I made it 14 years until this **** game came along :P

As people have said, a pack like HotR is not a problem and makes total sense.

Now of course complaining about how normal X-wing ships/cards are packed with EPIC ships is something valid to complain about. It could be argued that X-wing epic is in some ways a separate game from normal X-wing. I would prefer a syck fix coming with a chess set over being packed with a scum epic ship.

I know this doesn't help tournament players, but I do all my squad builds with online builders, so this never affects me at all. OTOH (see above), I am an OCD collector and still buy at least one of everything.

a few $10-15 expansion packs was all it took to keep up. .

To me this is where you're going wrong. You don't have to "keep up." If you're not interested in the new Falcon and Poe, then don't buy it. It's really quite simple.

Sure, the Meta changes as with each major release and if you're trying to be really competitive you'll have to adapt. But if you're just playing Star Wars, you don't need to buy everything. Just buy what you like, or think is a reasonable amount. I like to play in tournaments, but I've skipped most of the EU stuff because I have no connection to or interest in it.

I've done well enough without the Falcon, YT-2400, Decimator, YV-666, Khiraxz, K-Wing, T-70 pack, HWK-290, Aggressor, and Ghost.

Greetings

If I don't like the look of a ship or don't have a use for it, I don't buy it. So, for example, I am not getting the Hounds Tooth, IG-2000 because I personally am not wild about the look of the ships. I succumbed to the Firespray because Slave-1 is in the films.

As I have said elsewhere I may get HotR or put it on my Xmas list - and I expect a lot of people interested X-Wing and in Ep VII will buy it.

Regards

Edward

but I'm sure there are many who didn't even read this far before hitting the reply button with their rage/hate

Nice try. You don't have any valid argument to support your statement, so you discredit every opposing response in advance.

At this point, Armada - which is already a great game - is looking more and more appealing to me. If I am going to put out $30-50 for a single ship pack, it's going to be for a Star Wars game that is not dice-dependent and that has actual strategy in its design.

Yeah, X-Wing really does depend entirely on luck. That's why you never see the same players placing high at tournaments. Or World Championships.

Luckily, Armada completely lacks dice, so it's much better.

Oh wait....

In all seriousness, I've got nothing against either game or the rest of your rant. I get where you're coming from. It's getting expensive to keep up; but that's going to happen with any game (even Armada, assuming it keeps growing). I like X-Wing, so I'll keep playing. But to each his own.

Having had more than my share of arguments with Boris, he isn't a troll. I know the point of where he is coming from. From some of the few posts he has made, it sounds like his group doesn't spend very much on X-wing.

And there is nothing wrong with preferring Armada over X-wing. Different games appeal to different people.

Bring on Kylo's shuttle and special forces tie pack.

Curse FFG making you buy their stuff...... oh wait.

Wow another thread complains about an optional expansion!

Don't want it dont buy it!

Simples.

X-Wing getting to hard to keep up with? You don't have to purchase everyship; FFG is not responsible for your OCD.

I don't agree with OP about the prices, but the ships could have been sold separately. A single Black Squadron T-70 that came with another IA would have been a pleasant pickup.

And those interested in the new YT-1300 pilots/crew would have that option as well.

Packaging them together is kinda sneaky... I haven't flown my YT-1300 once yet; and while that's certainly going to change with the new pilots and crew, I doubt I'm ever going to fly two.

I feel like I'm buying another Gozanti Cruiser/ Rebel Transport here.

As a mostly Imperial player, I still end up having to buy other faction expansions because of the exclusive upgrades.

Conner Nets, Experimental Interface, Engine Upgrade, Lone Wolf, Autothrusters, Draw Their Fire, Flechette Cannon, Mangler Cannon, Adaptability, Wingman, Accuracy Corrector...

Hey, I'm not complaining. I'm resigned to the strong possibility I'll have to pick up this expansion for whatever Imperial-compatible upgrades it includes.

Maybe I am complaining, whatever.

Yeah this is a rant. Get ready to post your hate.

When this game came out, one of the best selling points was that it was relatively cheap to get into. A $25-30 core set and 2-3 $10-15 expansion packs and you were good to go. Even when new waves came out - Falcon aside - a few $10-15 expansion packs was all it took to keep up. Most people I knew who played between 2012 and 2015 didn't spend more than $100-150 over the course of those 2 years.

But those days appear to be over, and the Heroes of the Resistance pack is just the latest piece of evidence. Rather than give us a new $15 Poe Dameron with a new pilot ability, we get a rushed thrown together gimmick added to a reinvented Millenium Falcon - no doubt to drive up the price of the packaging by having that second ship in there, even though it didn't really cost much more to modify the paint scheme on the T-70.

My complaint is aimed at FFG and posted publicly but I'm sure there are many who didn't even read this far before hitting the reply button with their rage/hate because how dare anyone be disappointed with the expensive direction Asmodee and FFG is taking their once cheap space combat game.

Do NOT pay full MSRP that's idiotic.

Buy online save 25%.

True, but they do take full advantage of it.

They'd be idiots not to. They are a business at the end of the day.

Someone forgot the fuss about the tfa core and needing the new damage deck didn't they, if we hadn't kicked off that would of been a mandatory purchase.

Sorry, I should have added a smiley face to indicate that my comment was meant in jest.

Stupid observation but is this the answer to imp vets?

Honestly I wait a few weeks to get new the new ships. Amazon usually discounts them by five or ten dollars or something like that. I love all the ships that but I like the new T70s and tie/fos a little less then say an interceptor or an e-wing. I usually buy every pack anyways just because the ships look so cool even though I wont be flying them anytime soon. When it comes down to it if someone just wants the upgrade cards they can go to a trading website and do just that without spending the forty five dollars for the whole pack, or maybe they just want the ships because they look cool some thing but at that point it would be more advantage to get the pack and sell off the unwanted items. I see what your saying and yes it is partly them wanting to get some more cash but it also does bring in the younger new players because that is the ship they saw in the movies and it is fun a fun game to play with people until they meet a try hard competitive list like fat han or something like that lol.

Also, HotR is cheaper than buying a T-70 and a Falcon, so color me confused as to the pricing complaint.
