Those plastic dials, how are they?

By Koing907, in X-Wing

The dial on my VCX-100 is very loose. Pretty dissapointed. Before I try some artsy-craftsy attempt to "fix" it, how are the plastic dials?

Do the hold the manuver dial securely?

How easy is it to switch dials if I want to use a few plastic ones for my whole collection, and swap out the dials for whatever ships I'm using?

I am interested to red the replies.

There really aren't many/any reviews on them.

Oh man, the dial upgrades? WAYYYY better than I would've thought. I picked some up last week on a whim and I can't be happier with them.

They're sturdy, they're easy to spin, and incredibly easy to read. I'd handled the Armada dials before and those are great too, so it isn't a surprise that a) they'd come to X-Wing, and 2) they'd still be fantastic.

It's weird. I was completely indifferent to them at their announcement but now I can't see myself going to a tourney without them. They just feel so much better than the plain cardboard. The only downside is that if you only buy a pack of three, you're going to swap dials into and out of them a fair bit during SC season.

I have them and they actually just copies of the command dials used in Armada. They are great for many reasons. They aren't as loose as some of the regular cardboard dials, they are obviously more durable, they eliminate confusion over which dials belongs to which ship and they can be customized to match a ships paint job or just a color so that you can ID them as yours. Only two minor complaints: the cost seems a little high (1-2 packs per faction unless you're swarm player) and disassembling all the old ones and swapping them out with lists is a minor hassle.

All in all I would highly recommend at least 1 dial upgrade kit for each faction you play. Personally I plan on 2 for each.

I like them. Being able to see the whole dial at once is great for planning out and thinking ahead of the current turn. Taking the plastic dials apart is not too bad. It is a small t-shaped peg which should allow for quite a few changes before it starts to wear.

Taking the cardboard dials apart is the most annoying part of the whole experience.

My VCX dial is really loose as well. Almost got me in trouble as when I flipped my dial over is spins a little putting it halfway between moves. I just ordered a few sets of dial upgrades, so I am anxious to try them out. Being able to see the entire dial before setting your move should help speed things along as well.

1. if the dial is too lose it's a problem in tournaments, you can ask for a replacement from FFG.

2. the plastic dials are awesome. I bought several. if you get a plastic dial too loose also you can ask for a replacement.

I was skeptical, but bought a set for the same reason--loose VCX dial. I ended up really liking them, though: it's easy to swap out, it holds the dial very securely, and it's actually a lot more useful than I thought to be able to see the whole dial at once when you're choosing a maneuver.

Yep. I will give the plastics a spin. *har har*

I spent a few hours reorganizing my collection. Dial storage was becoming a real pain and I had bought 1 pack of the dial upgrades already.

I liked them so much that I spent a few hours reorganizing my collection and taking apart all of my dials so that I only have to carry the dial bottoms with me.

I have 7 packs of these things now.

They're great because you can see all of a ship's maneuvers at once. Even if you've memorized a dial sometimes a particular maneuver doesn't come to mind. They also don't spin accidentally.

They are lovely. I've had no issues with mine and own 6 scum ones. Worth the buy if you like the idea of them.

I have some and have used them with new ships but haven't taken any old dials apart - is there a simple way to take them apart without damaging them?

When pulling a dial apart, you want to try to pull the male rivet out of the female rivet. The male rivet is only held in place by the female rivet, whereas the female rivet is held in place by the cardboard dials and the male rivet.

What I did was pinched it underneath my fingernails and pulled. For ones that were stuck I would pru it apart enough to wedge a butter knife in there so I could just pop them off.

Staple remover seems almost purpose built for this.

Oh and it is good to read that the plastic dials are good I was on the fence about getting some, but one of my T-70 dials and one of my Awing dials are getting a bit loose so I think I need to get some.

...well bugger. I'd mentally written these off despite kind of liking the idea of them. Now I want some.

Thanks, you expensive sods.

One could use these dials for any faction really couldn't they?

If I put TIE-FO dials in a Rebel dial holder it wouldn't matter one bit would it really?

Anyways I think I'm going to get a Rebels set.

Yea I've seen several people do this now and it makes me jealous. Being able to stack dials... I can only dream... (until they release more).

Yeah, but you can put in your own numbers. My friend has done that.

I don't think the rebel dials come with the little ship ID tokens that you put in the back, for Imperials though.

Right. You can get around this by only using very new ships that come with their own ID tokens.

I was skeptical about these dials. It's good to see they are adding value to a lot of peoples gaming. My LFGS can't keep them in stock. It makes me wonder if the colored bases are going to be as popular. FFG has a way of making good things even though I don't initially understand how much I need them. But, I guess that happens with the expansions as well as the accessories, as evident from the mixed reception of the Heroes of the Rebellion expansion.

If you do tournaments then buy them. Help to look at the field of movement better! Other then that save your money.

Was that a 'Mean Girls' movie reference/joke? Werent the girls in it called the Plastics?

I haven't seen Mean Girls, so if it is, it's unintentional. :)
