Christmas Present

By Snak, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hello, I'm going to buy a board game to offer my brothers but I don't really know which one to choose. I already have a list, but I would appreciate some opinions. And reasons to choose that game. My list is:

1. Arkham Horror
2. Battlestar Galactica
3. War of the Ring
4. Twilight Imperium
5. Talisman
6. Warcraft (not WoW)
7. Cosmic Encounter
8. Descent

Hope you guys can help me with your opinions.

Of the first two, BSG is a little simpler but harder for new players because there is so much deception that the new player needs to be taught a whole lot before he can play well.

Arkham has more moving parts, but a newbie can jump right in because there is no hidden info.

BSG is fun if you group likes bluffing, and a somewhat stressful hidden-traitor interaction.

Arkham is all team-based, the enemy is the cards.

I'm sure all the games you listed are "good" games in their own right but it's really hard to recommend the "best" game unless you provide some background about your brother. How old is he? Is he a gaming novice or is he an experienced hobby gamer? Is he interested in Sci-fi, Fantasy or historical gaming? Is he more likely to play solo, two-player or multiplayer? Is he looking for a competitive or cooperative game? Does he prefer card games, board games or miniatures-based games?

I suspect if you provide answers to the questions above, you will get more feedback from forum users. Of course, you should remember that this is the "Arkham Horror" forum so there may be some favoritism in their recommendations...

yea best game really depends on your preferences, i play a.h and tannhauser, which isnt on your list but a great game, bsg is a very good game but you do need at least 3 players for that, i would go with a. h first, you get a lot of game for your money and its a great game at that

Guys are right : you should bother more about your brothers than the games. When you got their tastes clear, you ll get the right game too. You know them. You know how you and your brothers behave together, so what would be the best game for you all, eh. But man, you're a nice guy, I wish I was not the oldest brother, so mine could buy a boardgame to me, as when I was a teenager, ten years ago.

Anyway, I got all of these games but two, and whatever you buy will be good. It's ffg dope, man ! :D

True that! I think I'll go for AH, tbh (it's at 46€ in a local store, with Christmas discount). I think I'll love the game and the athmosphere can be pretty cool between us 3. Maybe I can get my parents to play too. Won't be easy though, because of the rules being in English, but I'll try. Cosmic Encounter will be my next aquisition, I think.

for what its worth...

As much as i love to recommend Arkham to people, there is a LOT of text involved in the rules AND the play. I'd recommend Cosmic Encounter if your group doesn't have strong skills in English.

As much as I love Arkham Horror, it is not a "gateway game" so I would be a little hesitant about buying it as a family game. Echoing an earlier poster, I'd probably go with Cosmic Encounter for that purpose. It has a lot of depth but is more accessible to infrequent/novice gamers. Nevertheless, if your family is up to the challenge of Cthulhu, more power to you!

I think they'll be up to it. Won't hurt trying =)

And it will be fun for some gaming nights with my neighbours
