X-Wing catalog # SWX20?

By darkdooku, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Looking at the released X-Wing expansions I can't seem to find what SWX20 was. Can anybody help me fill in the gap here?

That was the Starfield Tile Map Kit ... I don't believe it ever saw the light of day, but looked pretty cool. 1' square cardboard space tiles, nine 12 to a pack.

Thank you! That would explain why I can't find it on the FFG official sites.

Yeah... I'm not sure what problem they found with them in playtesting but to totally scrap a design and move to the playmats must have seen something serious.

I bet the fact that they could be easily bumped and spread apart probably is what doomed them. Also the transportation of these panels would be tricky. A mat rolls up nice and narrowly.

Maybe... I've used similar with Golem Arcana and the tiles are similar sized and I would assume made similarly. It wasn't a problem moving between them or separation, though you ended up moving to pre-printed grids instead of using templates on them. That might affect it, or getting good enough adhesion so the surface did not have trouble. No idea... but it would have had to be heavy duty, and yes, I do like the roll-up mats over the squares... except you get two sides on the tiles and can mix and match for a slightly different game every time you play with only a little variance in tiles.

Wow... I haven't even thought of my Golem Arcana stuff since I started playing X-Wing.

If it is 12 squares to a playsurface then you have a grid, and good players will be able to measure movement better on a grid. Also, cardboard tends to bend with moisture so there's that. They slide apart on a bump.

Mats were a much better design overall so its easy to see why the tiles became obsolete.

The tile size is something to note, hadn't thought about that in terms of making maneuver distance judgements easier.
