Could Squadron type army book be a fix for over costed early ships?

By Archangelspiv, in X-Wing

Hey Everyone,

With all the nerf this, fix that talk it got me thinking what could be a paintbrush approach to fixing the costing of some ships, ie Firespray etc. I am a long time Warhammer player and nearly as long time GW hater, so don't see me trying to go down that path, but I was thinking could FFG do away with the points on the old ships and release a small book, ie the rules size book, with all the ships with a new thought out squad cost for each ship.

I love the Firespray, but almost 40 points is a whole lot to pay, then you have to mod it. For 33 points I can get a scout that in all seriousness could kill Boba points for points, and the scout costs less.

Please feel free to tear this idea apart. Wookie I cannot wait for your nope answer and leave it at that without adding anything else ;)

Cheers guys

Have a good one!

one issue is the cards - which are a requirement for tournament play, how do you get them? if they differ to what is in the book, what trumps what (book beats cards.. now every one needs to get the book so they know whats been changed or cards beat book - so whats the point in the book)

Second is number of ships & split packs people have so getting the number of cards right is at best a nightmare of logistics.

So for your idea to work they only have to change both their buisnesss model & their tournament rules.......

Or maybe neither has to change if the book was released with some cards for all the changed ships. Though at that point they should just release box of cards, not a book....which is quite doable, I beleive Privateer Press does that - a deck of cards for each faction.

FFG is onto a hot seller here. Theyre happy to keep making fixes and expansions because players will buy them. a single rulebook while elegant solution to fixes doesnt make as much $.

Ok boxes.....now are we talking about just for what they are changing or every thing? (WM/H it was a 100% change and you have 1 card per model /unit)for everything we are talking about 4 cards min per ship & 2 upgrades cards per the same ship... so how do you split it?

ship cards & upgrad cards? Or factions (Imp, rebs & scum)

(note I actually think they should release boxes of new cards if /when they do a new version - but I know it will be a logistical nightmare and possibly end up with a change of format for the cards or being mail order as individual ship boxes ie you say you want 4 x-wing packets 6 TIE/Lns etc and upgrade cards not requiring a card per ship that takes it but one per item in your list (kinda like a rules reference))

I'd suggest the following: Each faction gets a box with the ships and all the upgrades that are unique to that faction. And then all the other upgrades in another pack, or pack of upgrades of each type.

My suggestion is that FFG sell foil packets with three random cards in them like the card came companies do. That way they can increase their card sales too as well as models. It replaces one absurdity with another. But hey .. what customer now days actually gets what they want. Maybey Battlefront are the only company who strive for happy customers ?

I think you misunderstand my intention Slasher. They keep selling expansions as they do now etc, but to get the older ships in line they could have a book that would alter the costs as they appear on the cards. It would only supercede squad points, nothing else, you get the cards etc the same old way but would or could be a way that they bring some of the older ships back into play.

but even then 'just' changing the points cost of the ships - why stop there do it on the upgrade cards as well

for casual play then a page in the errata pdf will work... but for Tournament play, you /your opponenet can count the points on the card to check lists are leagal, points remaining etc etc. So the moment you change one thing on a card you have to change the whole card... which is my point HOW do you change it? OR do you change tournament rules to say your list must be created using one of X online builders?

As a GW veteran I vote no on army books.

As someone who's never touched a GW army book, also no.
