Palp Aces or BroBots

By RoyalPayne, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Been practicing with a couple builds lately for regionals and doing very well with them, just trying to decide which build I want to use

Palp Aces

Omicron Pilot (22)

Palpatine (8)

Title (3)

Omega Leader (21)

Juke (2)

Comms Relay (3)

Stealth Device (3)

Col. Vessery (35)

VI (1)

Tractor Beam (1)

TIE/D Title (0) (When it is released)

Ion Engine Mk II (1)

BroBots (usual meta)

B and C (36)

Mindlink (1)

FCS (2)

HLC (7)

Glitterstim (2)

AutoThrusters (2)

Title

100 points total

Input Please.

Obviously Number 2 hence Defender titles are not released and therefore not allowed for regionals

The regionals will be after release

So as of now just proxying

First of all, I apologise for the length of this post. You should see my uni work :blink:

I play both Brobots and Palp Aces so I feel well placed to offer advice. I have a multiple suggestions you may or may not have considered, please feel free to disregard my advice if you have considered and decided against any of my suggestions. I haven't flown the TIE Defender with the new titles yet so take any suggestions surrounding Colonel Vessery in particular with a pinch of salt. In case you're interested, my lists are below;

Palp Aces

Darth Vader + Veteran Instincts + TIE/x1 + Advanced Targeting Computer + Engine Upgrade (35)

Carnor Jax + Push The Limit + Royal Guard TIE + Autothrusters + Targeting Computer (33)

Captain Yorr + Emperor Palpatine (32)

100 total

Brobots

IG88-B + Push The Limit + Advanced Sensors + "Mangler" Cannon + IG-2000 + Autothrusters (48)

IG88-C + Predator + Advanced Sensors + Heavy Laser Cannon + IG-2000 + Autothrusters (51)

99 total

If you decide to fly Brobots, I have found that asymmetrical Brobots are more effective but require a lot of practice to master. This build is what suits me personally. IG88-B gets stuck in while IG88-C provides fire support from range. IG88-B with this build is effective at any range and has options to spare, being able to plan 2-3 turns ahead and alter the plan on the fly is key to getting the best out of it. IG88-C offers long range fire support and built-in defensive action economy to get the best out of IG88-B. IG88-C has more chance of lasting until the end game and is arguably the better end game ship of the two. You have clearly flown both lists before so what I'm about to say is something you probably already know, but I feel obliged to point out that opponents flying multiple aces will be extremely difficult to beat, your best strategy for taking an ace down is to block with one ship and kill with the other. If you take either suggestion I make about your Palp Aces list in the next paragraph, it should have less issue against enemy aces.

Despite having no experience with the TIE Defender, I can see what you are trying to achieve with the Palp Aces list you presented. Lambda and Omega Leader target lock an enemy, allowing Colonel Vessery to perform shenanigans with Tractor Beam and hit hard with an endless supply of his own target locks. Lambda also has Emperor Palpatine for dice manipulation and Omega Leader provides soft control against opponents with a lot of dice manipulation of their own. The thing about Omega Leader is, he has no way of stopping enemies dodging his firing arc and only has two red dice, the aces that get hit hardest by his pilot ability have the manoeuvrability to avoid him and even if he does catch them in arc, two hits without any crits isn't enough to kill any ship in a single round of fire. My solution would be to field a PS8+ pilot with Veteran Instincts to beat the aces at their own game, my suggestions for that role would be one of the following;

Darth Vader + Veteran Instincts + TIE/x1 + Advanced Targeting Computer + Engine Upgrade (35)

The Inquisitor + Veteran Instincts + TIE/v1 + Autothrusters (29)

Carnor Jax + Veteran Instincts + Autothrusters (29)

The Inquisitor and Carnor Jax both fit without dropping points elsewhere in the list. The Inquisitor provides target locks for Colonel Vessery while Carnor Jax provides a similar soft control element to Omega Leader, with the Lambda title the ability to target lock shouldn't be necessary. Darth Vader costs a lot more, requiring you to drop the Lambda title and Twin Ion Engine Mk.II and swap Veteran Instincts for Adaptability, but he is by far the best at the role and Advanced Targering Computer synergises perfectly with Colonel Vessery.

Are you set on flying the TIE Defender? If not, may I offer a 4 ship Palp Aces list for your consideration? This list is considered by many to be among the best incarnations of Palp Aces. It is certainly unique and very interesting. The list is;

The Inquisitor + Push The Limit + TIE/v1 + Autothrusters (31) OR Carnor Jax + Push The Limit + Autothrusters (31)

"Omega Leader" + Juke + Comm Relay (26)

"Wampa" (14)

Omicron Group Pilot + Emperor Palpatine (29)

100 total

This list presents the opponent with a very serious dilemma; do they take out the aces and let Wampa score free damage through shields or do they take out Wampa and let the aces have free reign, all the while with Palpatine manipulating the dice. A very annoying and effective list ;)

Apologies again for the length. I hope I have been helpful.
