What if X-Wing had only 3 new ships per year?

By Crabbok, in X-Wing

Scum needs a fair few releases to catch themselves up on the variety. Hence I was probably the only one disappointed with the Rebel's getting an announcement of a update pack before Scum. XD

To the OP: what Armada releases do you feasibly see coming up?

I think they dropped the ball with Armada's scale as the ships are too large for ships larger than an ISD. Also the starfighter variety in the universe is much greater than Frigate+ ships.

One thought:With every new release this game becomes less of a miniatures game, and more of a card game.

This exactly!!! And I like miniatures, not cards!!

You aren't alone!!!

I think your mad. Who has dosh to throw around on that many models. Each model costs twice the average hourly wage in my country.

So if people are having to buy too much to stay current .. then they will just quit and go on to the next best affordable option.

Sure you get the big show off who buy everything possible but most punters only need a few.

It's a shame you cant buy the cards separately.

Oh and lets not forget how freight from the US cost twice as much as the models... I mean really .. whats with the corrupt freight markets in the US. Especially when you can freight from China or even the UK for less than half of that?

The question should be "Why do they not ship directly to NZ from China and skip US?"

For me, it would be perfect if we had one Wave per year, with 3 ships per Wave, and then one set of repaints per year as well, such as Imperial Veterans or Heroes of the Resistance etc. It's a manageable amount and stops the game looking too daunting for new players.

Look at the wall of products for Star Trek Attack Wing... as a new player to that, the sheer number of ships would put me off massively.

How do you guys feel? If you only got one wave per year for X-Wing, and lets say, for the sake of argument, it was a smaller-than-normal wave.... (Say, 1 Rebel, 1 Imperial, and 1 Scum). Would you be ok with that if it meant they could catch other games up?

I think I would actually cry .

(However, perhaps given that I attend "X-wing Miniatures Anonymous" this might be a good thing...)

I'm alarmed to see people saying x-wing is about "the cult of the new". This is completely untrue. Take for example, Tie Interceptor, Tie Phantom, Vader. All old, all really, really good.

Well, for me, the release schedule is more than I can every play with. I'm spending this weekend getting all my sealed (as in never even got around to opening them) X-Wing, Armada, and Imperial Entanglements minis set up for Ebay. I'll also figure out how to sell off my opened / mint ships/cards, etc.

I love the game (its Star Wars, how could you not?), simply not enough time to play, and I won't open something new unless I'm playing regularly as I have a history of buying games despite my lack of time/available players. And now, with my son heading off to the University of Oklahoma, the vast majority of my gaming is coming to a close.

X-Wing is awesome, but I can't keep up (playing), and owning it alone isn't worth it. No bitter farewell, just time to face reality, and I'll still come see by to see how the game is going.

Anyone looking for anything specific, I bought at pre asmodee prices, and will sell at pre asmodee prices.

OT content:

T-65, TIE Fighter, Advanced, Y-wing, A-Wing, Interceptor, Falcon, Slave One, B-wing, Bomber, Space Cow---that's he first three waves minus the HWK.

Then we had both Aces sets. And the Rebel Huge sets.

The next 5 waves we got a few more 'canon' releases, the Outrider, Hounds Tooth, Gozanti, TAP, Ghost and Attack 'shuttle' and two more 'aces' as well as Most wanted and he Y again. I believe the Defender and Z-95 are canon now too. Thanks to TCW and Rebels as well as Special Edition and the Prequels we got all these as official SW ships in the Disney canon. HWKs are canon too!

Then there's the other thangs. E-wing, TIE Phantom, Scyk, Starviper, the other Bounty Hunter ships, K-fighter, K-wing, Punisher, Decimater (may be canon too). Raider, a totally new ship made by FFG!!!!

And the TFA releases, also including one of those new aces sets. New movies!!! More ships! Sorta.

I don't know how many of the releases outside the first 3 waves were 'necessary' to have a 'good' game, but this game has continued to sell like crazy despite all this 'other stuff'. 8 waves, averaging 4 expansions each, about 20-25 bucks average, 60-100 bucks per wave to get one of everything. 4 huge ships, usually as much as a whole wave! 4 aces. 2 core sets.

So, what does it all mean? It means I've given them a ton of money for a great game!!!!

Even tho there's an occasional release of an obscure ship that will totally warp the meta (TLTs from an ugly k-wing, triple toilets) I still just keep plugging, buying only one of each release. So far it's given me enough variety and upgrades to make tons of lists, just not the unoriginal spam or swarm lists. Might eventually get enough TIEs for the traditional Swarm, but that's because it's special and the first Meta. I'm still here, and I like it. I guess the release schedule has been...ok, not too slow, not to fast, and I REALLY want Imp Vets!!!!

and someday....GUNBOAT! You know it will happen.

FFG should just keep going, they have done a great job making me buy stuff I never thought I would, like those ugly scum ships.

Z-95 is defo canon, courtesy of The Clone Wars.

But when did the TIE Defender become canon?

Most people would crucify FFG for that slow of a release pace.

Moreover FFG likely can not afford to have the SW licence and not utilize it. X-wing is their best selling line. It is because X-wing sells so well that Armada exists as it does. If X-wing switched to releasing 3 ships a year FFGs revenue, and ability to continue forward with SW products, would likely be severely comprised.

Honestly, I'm not sure why you think the Armada crowd is happy with the release pace. The delay between the Core, Wave 1, and Wave 2 were quite problematic, and the announcement that Wave 3 only contain 2 "ships" was not particularly well received.

I imagine that FFG's license cost them a flat fee plus a percentage of the sale of each miniature, rule book, &c.

If FFG cannot keep up with what LFL and Disney want to be making from the license, they may lose it to somebody like GW or Topps or the license may go back to WOTC.

It is in FFG's best interest - and if you don't want to see the Star Wars license in the hands of GW, et al., yours, too - that they do what makes them the most sustainable profit.

Fewer waves / expansion could also mean more play testing time which I think would be a good thing

I'm seriously considering Getting out of this game because of time and money

While it is cheaper than other games, when I look at how much I've spent, makes me consider using that money towards something more productive

Really!!? What could possibly be more productive than owning cool plastic spaceships? :P

But seriously why get out of well built game than can be played in a short amount of time and is easy to teach to new players.

X-wing makes a great warm up game if you play board games
