Part two of my Ship Spotlight Series: The VSD

As I continue my look at ships and how they fit into Armada in the current wave 2 world, I decided to go chronologically. The Victory Star Destroyer was initially the beast of the core set, and the bane of many Rebels who hadn't yet learned how to out maneuver the monster. In Wave 2, the ship has largely been left by the way side for it's big brother the Imperial Star Destroyer. But is it still viable? Is there still room in your fleet for the aging capital ship?

How do you make and attach smoke/fire to your ships like that? I want to know! :)

It's okay, everything's fine!

Fixed it :P

I actually light the ships on fire when they're destroyed. Yes, it increases the cost, but I love the smell of burning plastic in the morning!

It's just cotton dyed colors :)

As a heavy user of the VSD, Steve pretty much summed up the VSD in a nutshell. Slow, but solid...and a great fleet carrier.

Honestly, the Gonzo carrier has already put several nails into the coffin that is the VSD. for roughly a fourth of the points I could replace a VSD with a ship with a much smaller profile. I think the VSD is slowly being pushed out with each passing wave, I hope that isn't the case.

Odd though the VSD is used as a carrier, when in reality the Venator was the carrier and the VSD was the warship...

Nice. might try it out too.How do you attach them to the ship being damaged?

You ever play historical miniatures? flip a turret and put some dyed cotton down.

Dale- I also fear the Gozanti will seal the fate of the VSD. But time will tell. It's made a big come back since wave 2 first dropped, so maybe a new niche will be found.

As for the smoke, it's cotton so you just sort of plop it on there and hook it on the ship a bit :)

The more I play around on warlords, the more I see the Victory as a dying breed. It's too slow, it lacks defensive upgrades, and the Gonzo can do it's job (carrier) better. Tarkin bumps their squadron count to three a pop, and with boosted comms and bomber command you've basically made the VSD worthless.

VSD 2's could make a come back...maaaaaaaaaybe due to their longer range....but I seriously doubt it.

Haha I see. Thanks! Now there is some use for the vsd antennae :D

Saddly, Corrupter is the only thing that keeps the VSD on my list building radar at all, now that the Gozanti has been revealed. Even that is diminished by wave 3.

I'm holding out for a title card that gives VSDs a comeback shot. Like what X-Wing did with the TIE/x1 upgrade card. I think an upgrade allowing the Victory to take Support Team upgrades would instantly bring it back into the game. In addition to being a cost-effective carrier platform, it could be upgraded with Engine Techs to be what it was meant to be: a mid-weight battleship.

In my fleet games the VSD is a great complement. I have 3 ISD and 2x 3x VSD squadrons, plus a VSD communication Ship with VSD escort(carrier)and 1 x Lancer frigate. My picket squadron is my 4 x GSD. The ISD are the line vessels, with the 2 VSD squadrons as support. And to keep ships from departing early I have an Interdictor squadron with 1 x Interdictor heavy cruiser, 1 x Vindicator heavy cruiser escort, 3 x Nebulon B's. My fleet may be a little slow but in several games have worked very nicely. Tie in my squadrons and I usually pound the rebels unless my ISD are outmaneuvered then my fleet speed can be a problem. I don't have the 360+ dollars to add 6 more ISD to my fleet...........so I call it a fleet headquarters logistics shortage :)

pasewi, or give it something akin to that new TIE Bomber upgrade. Some sort of refit that uses the Ordnance slot but increases its maneuverability.

They'll HAVE to save the VSD. It's in the core set. How much would it suck as an Imperial player to be forced into buying a ship that no one uses?

Eventually, Motti won't be good enough to justify buying the VSD expansion, unless they salvage the ship. For now, they're a cheap-ish heavy carrier, but their days are numbered without a buff.

Oh man, see X-Wing game with X-Wings. X-Wings are amongst the most underutilized ship in that game and it came with the coreset.

I wondered the same thing with my playgroup, until one of my friends pointed out that you pay a good price for a 8 hull ship with an offensive team slot and a turbolaser. So in the very least, you could give it 10 hull in a motti fleet and split fire with three reds out of a gunnery team. That's already better than a Nebulon-B, and on even terms with an Assault Frigate but with more hull.

I've been running a couple of them without upgrades in a motti mass fleet. I find them useful as end-road blockers. Presuming you have the deployment freedom to do so, you can plonk them down in some place you don't want the enemy to go and advance at speed 1 (if you want to maintain distance) or speed 2 (if you want to creep up into black range).

For list compositions like this, chances are, good lists force an enemy to choose between facing two VSD-Is at the end of a route, or something else coming at them from the opposite flank, which could be anything from a tricked out Demolisher with Raider friends, or a rampaging ISD, or something.

I don't think the VSD can be the "star" of the show anymore thanks to the appearance of the ISD. But as far as secondary ships go, I don't think the VSD is a slouch. It still has more raw hull than the Assault Frigate and deals more damage when it comes into meaningful range.

I was also writing off the VSD for a while but I'm starting to give it some second thoughts.
