So this 'whole new model' business....wot?

By xanderf, in X-Wing

Of course! The Compressor! LOL! ;) :P

I really don't see how there could be a whole new sculpt.... It's the same ship except for the dish!

I hope that this is not FFG's first step into the blatant money grab game! :(

Unfortunately, we're closer to their third step

I take issue with "re-releasing" a model that everyone has already (The Falcon) and saying that it is different.

But it is different, just because it's hard to notice doesn't change anything. But even if it wasn't, what they're doing is no different than the other aces packs.

as opposed to forcing everyone into having two falcons.

Please explain how anyone is being forced into doing anything? They're releasing a product you can either buy or not buy. Did they force people into buying two or more IG88's or into buying a VT-49?

From what I can tell, Imperial Veterans will be the third time they have released ships that have already been released, but with just a different paint scheme and new cards. If you want to be picky (and it seems like many seriously want to be), they have released X-wing and TIE expansions, which are the EXACT same model AND paint scheme as those already released in the core set but with new card. Both of these instances represent much more glaring examples of the thing that has some bent out of shape here.

I think the real issue is that people wanted (or expected) a different expansion than what was announced and this claim of "money grab" (which is ridiculous) is some sort of a message board tantrum.

Having this company occasionally release things that the majority of the fan base didn't expect isn't a bad thing.

The Falcon probably isn't gonna look a whole lot different... It's still the same ship.

By new model I'm thinking it might look a bit sharper with this minor differences that have been pointed out.

I'm really excited to grab this releases. I'd love a second Falcon. i might even convert my older one.

and this claim of "money grab" (which is ridiculous) is some sort of a message board tantrum.

It is. It's not like people haven't requested exactly what we're getting in that expansion, both a black and orange T-70, and this one is actually a different model. And a new YT-1300 with Rey as a pilot.

Anyone who didn't expect this to happen either just got here last week or is hopelessly naive. The YT-1300 is still one of the best selling models for FFG so making one from the new movie is just good business.

What I find amazing is that anyone could consider selling an optional and luxury product a cash grab...

Weren't you all coming up with Rey Pilot cards a few months ago?

Will FFG stay true to the movie props this time around though?

Is that... the Tumbler?

Realize that the item on the page is just a rendering. I do see some wear and tear in the paint scheme near the rear of the ship, plus the new radar dish. I would imagine they will simply just change much of the pain scheme for it to be worn down as the **** thing has been sitting under a tarp on Jakku for god knows how long.

Are they going to throw in the tarp?

That would be entertaining. Small plastic piece that you place over it when you aren't playing.

Upgrade: Tarp

Discard this card to deploy obstacle (Tarp)

When ship overlaps tarp, pilot becomes blinded and can not perform actions or attacks this round.

or into buying a VT-49?

**** I still don't have a decimator and I play Imperials like the dickens. Literally no expansions are must buys.

I have the Deci, but never bothered to get the 2400. this statement is true.

IT'S A TARP!!!!

It's not a money grab, that's ridiculous. Who in their right mind would not buy this expansion once, and only once?

Whereas if they made a Starwing Assault gunboat, I would be on the line for about 8 of them.

Don't get me wrong, I'd rather they release Rebel Veterans with a T-65 fix in it. But likely that's being held up to be released closer to Rogue One, so I'm not too worried.

And cash grab? Really? How is this any different to any other Aces pack (I.E Repaints with new cards and pilots)?

In regards to the comments about this being a money-grab by FFG, I just don't see it. Who is actually going to buy this pack specifically because it is a new model of a YT-1300? I think that crowd is very small. Most people will buy this game to play it, not just to collect new pieces. We all know that when it comes to game play, expansions sell because of the cards and interactions they produce, not just because of the models or paint jobs.

With that in mind? How is it any more of a cash grab than the other aces packs? See, they spent money and time to develop whatever changes are on that Falcon, but they didn't transmit that cost to us at all. A $40 expansion for one large ship and one small ship is just we'd expect it to cost. They could've said, "Hey look! It's a new model, and since we're not using the same sculpt, we're going to charge you $60 for this expansion." If that were the case, I'd agree it's a cash-grab. As it stands, I think it's great that they made whatever changes they did and rather than get in a tizzy right now, I'm gonna just sit back and wait for more information on the product and maybe even some reviews after it's released. Only then will we have the knowledge to say whether it was worth doing a new sculpt or not.

Yeah, there's plenty more cash grabs out there. At least this one doesn't come with a unique small based ship no available in any other expansions (Attack 'shuttle').

I think the thing that really bugs people on this one is that...most of us really DO NOT WANT another Falcon/YT-1300 model. When Rebel Aces or Imperial Aces or Imperial Veterans came out, that actually WAS the second ship (of a needed 3 or 4) for a lot of people. Some of us crazy-level collectors might even have had 3 TIE Defenders, and now we'll have 5...but 5 TIE Defenders on the table (in Epic) doesn't look weird or unthematic at all...it looks EPIC.

While the Falcon is a customized YT-1300, and having two copies of the Falcon model on the table from different points in its lifespan just looks...weird.

Above all, what I think it calls back to is the frustration many have that FFG didn't just release more cards for the existing Falcon model (a la the 'Most Wanted' pack), or indeed, do this expansion entirely as a cardboard and cards back, only. Which, yeah, they've said they have no intention of doing - but it leaves people in the irritated position of seeing cards they want, maybe even pilots, in a pack with models they don't want or need more of.

it seems several people don't understand why a lot of us are unhappy, here I try to explain the economic reason:

lets say an x-wing, or a-wing, costs $3 to FFG, and the cards (between designing shared between all sales and manufacturing) another $3, and they sell it for $9 to the distributor. profit $3

lets say a falcon costs $6 and the cards $6, and they sell it for $18 to the distributor. profit $6

ok so, assuming most x-wing players will buy 1 Heroes of the Resistance expansion, FFG will make the following profit for each option:

A. 2 small ships (x-wing and a-wing): total profit $6

B. a falcon and an x-wing: total profit $9

Now look at it from the point of view of the players. a lot of new builds come up all the time fielding several small ships. Many people might try fielding that additional x-wing or a-wing they got, but how many players want a 2nd falcon? it's so expensive you can only field 1 properly upgraded, while you can field multiple small ships.

and cost to the player:

at retail, 2 small ships are $30, but now you're forced to buy that 2nd falcon, and so it's $40.

This is such a shameless cash grab. I long for the days when X-Wing was just an independent passion project by FFG, to be played for love of the game in garages and basements rather than posh tournaments. But no, they had to go corporate with this whole thing, like a bunch of sell-outs.

At least I still have Attack Wing.

most of us really DO NOT WANT another Falcon/YT-1300 model.

I don't think you can really speak for what most of us want.

but how many players want a 2nd falcon? it's so expensive you can only field 1 properly upgraded

There was this thing called the summer of double falcons that proves you're wrong. Then there were all the double pancake lists of a YT 1300 and 2400.

So yes you can in fact field a second YT-1300, in fact if the new generic doesn't suffer from the same problem the ORS does, we may finally have a decent low price YT-1300.
