Will Resistance or First Order subfactions ever matter?

Ewww no, I certainly hope not. Kills list build diversity significantly.

I posted a week or so ago about subfaction specific crew or upgrades. Gives them a little more control over design space when they can design something for 2-3 ships in a faction instead of every ship in every faction. It'll be interesting to see if crew Rey is Resistance Only or such.

  • It doesn't really need to have a reason other than fluff, especially since they're mostly just modified versions of existing ships at the moment (and even share some pilots). It might get another reason in the future, but probably not soon.
  • They're resisting the spread of evil in the galaxy, specifically the First Order in this case. There's probably a better way to put it. They're not parallel to the Rebellion in a political, in-universe sense, but they fill the same role in a narrative sense.
  • The First Order does play things a lot differently than the Empire. Again, it's a narrative thing. The Resistance is where our heroes belong, and they fight an underdog war against the dark side (even if it's only because people aren't taking the threat seriously this time). The First Order are the villains, using the dark side, and a great threat to peace and happiness in the galaxy (the Empire may have had order, but order isn't necessarily a good thing).
  • This one seems a little weird to me. You could theoretically divide Scum and Villainy into subfactions like neutral smugglers, malicious pirates, or even something specific like Black Sun, but all of those things are already covered by Scum and Villainy. Maybe they'll split it more logically if they have a more iconic place in the movies to split it.

You've got your factions mixed up again. The Rebels are the bad guys. They are terrorists. The Reaistance is just a legitimized terrorist government and the First Order is just a political Party within the Empire that controlled a strong military after the terrorists assassinated the Emperor. I know there's a lot of propaganda out there but don't fall for it. Especially those old war movies they did like 30 years ago. Rebel scum and thier propaganda...

This is my favourite ever post!!! Finally somebody with common sense that sees the Rebellion as the scum and usurpers they really are!!! Viva La Empire :-)

No.

I don't think they will. For the longevity of the game you actually need to keep all the factions playable. Just releasing new ships and new abilities for those ships will severely limit the older models. Its better to have titles or ship specific upgrades to add new spice to order/resistance ships.

I think that it could matter later on, and be worked as a great idea if done well. Say, as squadron cards; upgrade cards that you pay for and applies to your entire squadron, provided that squadron meets certain restrictions.

Imagine a card like:

"TIE FIGHTER FANBOIS

Cost: 5

Imperial Only

All TIE Fighters in your squadron may take actions even if they overlap an obstacle or ship."

That would let swarms do crazy bumpercars all day with each other and with other ships and not worry about it - even barrel rolling backwards after colliding in order to get shots at what they collided with!

I'm not suggesting that EXACT card is a good idea, or even properly costed, but squadron-wide abilities that are limited by faction or ship type which you can purchase via points would be an interesting design space that I'm surprised they haven't explored yet.

Probably, even if it's only within the context of missions.

Or just start rolling out characters and ships that give bonuses only to one subfaction.
