HEROES OF THE RESISTANCE!

By PhantomFO, in X-Wing

Ships don't define a faction, but rather what the ships do. Many touted the G1A to be a "Scum B-wing", but it's so much more than that, despite it's on-paper stats and dial. Heck, even the Scum Z95 plays in a vastly different manner to the Rebel version, merely through the inclusion of an illicit slot. The pilots, too, have defined and refined the Scum faction, and given it a character through the abuse of dirty tricks and ruthless combos. If ever there was a testament to that, it's the Hwk; a ship that people are pushing through the voting process for the System Open finals as a handicap for Rebel players, but which is widely regarded as a strong support ship for Scum, all due to it's pilots.

Ships are just things. It's the pilots that define them, and they in turn, the faction.

Except none of the scum ships have ever really "shone". The scyk was garbage from the first preview. The Starviper less garbage, more overpriced and woefully unupgradeable.

Scum aren't unique in that respect. When was the last time you faced a generic E-wing? or a Rebel Hwk? The Punisher was lauded as the bomber that should have been, but almost immediately fell by the wayside, and hasn't been seen since (save for the odd casual game with a Deathrain or Redline).

The Scyk by itself was overpriced with it's title, and the Starviper overpriced in general. Fair to say, a Scum aces pack is probably already finished for these guys, and is probably next in line.

So, Gencon early release? May have to pay a buddy to pick me up one.

Love it. Was disappointed since I saw the film that all the named X-Wing pilots weren't in the game yet due to 'spoilers'. Now we get them! Nien in an X-Wing!

Poe makes sense. If you watch the scene where Finn yells "That's one hell of a pilot!" again, he kills TEN TIEs and a bunch of ground stormtroopers in about 15 seconds of screen time. That deserves PS9. Love the title too, makes whoever takes it a real squadron leader. Can remove his own red lock, or help out someone else.

Also I love this because I never got a second Falcon, and I knew this would come in some form so never repainted a T-70 to be black.

And we get more Integrated Astro cards, and loads of new upgrades. And a new Astromech! Love it!

And this seems to be the perfect "what do I buy next?" for people who joined the hobby recently and just got the TFA set and some ships. Nice jumping on point, like the Most Wanted set for Scum.

This right here. Thats exactly what this is. Its designed both to give FFG a chance to do TFA stuff justice now that they don't have to worry about spoilers and to act as a stepping stone expansion to new players who just got in to the game with the TFA hype.

I'm good with this set, as long as Rebel Veterans is still out there! I'll probably pick one of these up. I'm glad I never tried a Poe repaint!

I know Brah! I just gor another TFA Core this week since there was a nice sale on them and such at Amazon. The reason was to finish my main force of TIE Fo-Fo's and to do my own POE Repaint... yipes!

 :D :P

On the bright side Joe, more ships =better!

As much as I've been down on the inclusion of the Falcon model, the cards do look great. I'm especially curious about Snap Shot.

It's also about to become my X-wing career dream goal to not win a World's, National's, or even a regional, but simply to have Greg Grunberg sign my Snap Wexley card.

It always amazes me that 10 minutes of screen time flying equals ace, especially when they have 0 background in flying. One for the fan boys maybe. The first thing I thought when I saw this release is, what will be the first order equivalent? I think the upgrade cards will be interesting, I don't think the new Falcons will bring something new, but I think having more selection in T70's is a good thing. I wonder if people will try and make Rey fat and try to bring back the old days of Falcon love. An interesting release, but something to put on your Christmas list. It's gonna be a while until we see it.

First thought when seeing this.. may the 4th.. is star wars aprils fools?

Whole new Falcon for making the dish square.. lame, but i guess a lot of people did ask for it for some reason.

A black/orange t-70, everyone who cared painted it already.

T-70/Poe, off course they needed a buff they weren't good enough compared to t-65, and poe never got used?

Rey never flew a starship before and off course she is right away more skilled then Maarek Stele.

Named t-70 pilots, should have been in core set but better late than never i guess..

I did want Rey pilot and Finn crew but overall this pack seems very lame to me.

Luke never flew a starship before and he took down the Death Star

Anakin was 8, never flew a starship before and accidentally blew up everything.

Rey is a mechanic, who has been scavenging in starships her entire life having to know exactly how they work and YES had never flown a starship before.

However all of these people have one thing in common: The Force. It is canon that one of the features of the Force is quick-reflexes and better-than-expected pilot ability. Her pilot skill matches Luke Skywalker who was also a force-driven pilot whose only REAL spacebound action was The Battle of Yavin. So it actually feels 100% acceptable for Rey to be PS8.

SO PWT stands for primary weapon turret? But the front arc is the primary arc?

How is that not confusing?

no PWT is primary weapon turret

it's primary weapon turret as opposed to secondary weapon turret, ie that one entire upgrade slot + what the Outrider will turn your YT-2400 into

your primary weapon can be fired out of arc; pretty simple

No Pancake!

It's roundish as opposed to squarish (toast), i.e. that entire first meal of the day...all good breakfasts + bacon.

You could fire bacon out of arc; pretty silly though.

Just saw a tournament that had Zuckuss (G1A) and Bossk (YV666) in the finals. A fairly decent sized tournament.

Also, Palob has a tendency to show up in top lists. Once you get over the Scyk, Khiraxz, and StarViper, Scum is a very solid faction.

And the idea that, except for the most recent one, you have to ignore every uniquely scum small base ship doesnt strike you as a problem? Seriously?

Ignore three ships from the faction in favour of stronger ones? That's madness. Definitely not something you'd see happen with Rebels (Hwk, T65, generic E's) or Imperials (Bombers, Punishers, Advanced). Nooo, definitely not.

Guess Im crazy for thinking scum only ships should define the scum faction. And that small base ships should be a strong part of that.

and no, not sweet for us scum players who already have crap all to call our own

Imperial player with no unique upgrade types at all invites you to call the waaambulance.

FWIW, I always wondered why the Systems Upgrade slot wasnt unique to Imperials.

Outside of 3 ships (K fighter, Scyk, and to some extent Starviper), Scum is fine. They are better off than rebels in the opinion of many at the moment. And in case you were wondering, each faction has about 3 ships that aren't great at the moment.

Rebels- X-wing, B-wing, HWKs

Imperial- Firespray, Tie Bomber, Tie Punisher, Tie Defender

"Better off than Rebels"? Keeping in mind that Im excluding the Jumpmaster (or at least the contracted scout) as a lopsided mess (lolpun), seriously? Poe (even before this buff), stressbot, Corran and the like? clearly Im playing a different game I guess.

Ok, no Jumpmasters.

Bossk is popping up in some great lists, as well as the Trando Slaver loaded with some of the new, nasty scum crew. Zuckuss is proving to be a force. IGs are still as relevant as ever. Zs are Zs, and still great filler. Scum Firesprays aren't top level, but Boba, Kath and Emon are still terrifying when flown correctly. The same can be said for Guri and Xizor, and even Talonbane in some cases. TLT Ys are a bit behind now, but can still do work in the right hands. Poe and Corran are nearly unplayable in some metas thanks to the power of Alpha strike and the existence of Wampa in top tier lists, so I think we may be playing in very different metas considering those were the examples you chose to prove your point. Yes, they are still fantastic, but they are not in a good spot right now compared to where they were. Scum has so many crazy new tools from the Jumpmaster and Misthunter expansion that even if you don't go for the Uboats, you have a plethora of viable options.

I guess I'm just confused what you are upset about. Scum will get their update to the Scyk. No one here is saying the Syck is fine or the K fighter and Star Viper generics are fine. This was just more pressing. The window for The Force Awakens to be the most relevant Star Wars merchandise is quickly closing, so, as a company that, you know, wants to make a thing called money, they had to get this out. In fact, I think this might be a little behind. They should have probably swapped this and Imperial Vets if we are looking at this from a business aspect, but that might have drove these forums to madness from the reception this has received, so maybe I'm wrong. God forbid they release something aimed towards pulling in new players to the game and not towards fixing the ships we all chose to blindly purchase instead of waiting a few months to see if it was worth buying.

So Smuggled computer allows Rebels to have a Scum Illicit Upgrade!!! Sweet!!!!!

Smuggling compartments.

and no, not sweet for us scum players who already have crap all to call our own

least i have my mostly crappy selection of salvaged astromechs :-/

True, but its a modification, so it does have some limiting.

Alright dude, get off your high horse and learn to fly just a little. Scum small ships are nowhere near as bad as you are painting them out to be.

Time to toot my own horn just a bit:

I ended up getting second at a SC using a Starviper, Kihraxz, and HWK. The only list that beat me all day was the exact same one that won our local regionals flown by the same regional winner.

Scum small ships can absolutely be competitive, and they are nowhere near as bad as some ships were like pre-fix Advanced. In fact someone joked when I was setting up at the final table that now the Starviper fix wasn't coming because I'd done well with it.

In the mean time, I recommend that people actually try flying those ships that people on the internet say aren't very good. You might be surprised. I've even had decent success with mindlink Scyks.

Edit:

As to the box itself, that Black One title has me very excited. PtL BB-8 PS9 Poe is going to be a fantastic ship with it. Vessery and Omega Leader have got like six months tops.

Well, my poe repaint just got turned into a "Red ace" project.

I love the new Falcon (I still love the old one though), But now I feel like I can field it without feeling dirty. Maybe even run Chewie (If Rey is at 45, does that mean chewie's around 41, 42? Also new Generic!!!) for old times sake. Actually scratch that. New Falcon is going to be in my main list for awhile. Also Rey, Finn as crew/pilot. woot!

For the T-70, I like they included the new pilots from TFA, but at the same time, I feel like the Poe reprint was a waste. (I blame disney more than FFG, but at the same time, I feel FFG should have left Poe/BB-8 out of the TFA core set for this, and capped it off with a PS 8 "Blue Leader" or something like that). Black-one title is cool, as well as two copies of IA. I can't wait for the other card spoilages as this approaches!

I like poe, and I like him at PS 9, I just feel like it was a waste. also the point cost at 33 means i'm virtually never going to run him (I'd rather run his PS 8 version with VI or Adaptability).

Overall, a nice surprise from FFG. I can't wait!

Stop making an argument for pancakes and bacon, **** you! I'm no longer sure whether my sudden craving is to run Dash/Miranda, or buttermilk pecan pancakes and crispy bacon. It's 4am here. I can't do either right now!

You just had to bring Donut holes into the mix!

Luckily here in Oregon we put Bacon on our doughnuts... Bacon Maple Bars from VooDoo... Mmm...

Rey's ability is odd. Not sure if i like that over the usual Han ability.

Rey's is highly situational since it forces a turreted ship to want it's front arc. The tradeoff for not being "as" offensively awesome is it works on green die, but the falcon has crap green die anyway and is more than likely going to be tailed not hit head-on.

All for -1ps and -1pt. Yeah, not a fan of her. I think something involving the Force would be better, such as a free Evade token if someone attacks her from outside her arc.

The other half an I have threatened, on more than one occasion, to elope to Portland, gain 10lbs, and fly home again without telling anyone what happened.

If you like beer/liquor or ice cream make it 15lbs and a long weekend.

Many, many people on this forum need to recognize that they are not the only audience for this game. You may not even be the most important.

FFG has a massive hit on their hands and need to produce content. That content is going to attract more and more new players. This must happen or the game will die.

You folks with 5 T-70s and 2 Falcons can either buy this or not. FFG is banking on more sales by attracting a larger audience than disgruntled former Warhammer players.

Me? I'm super happy that I did not cave and by another T70 blister. Now I'll have four and four IA to go with them.

Extra Falcon? Maybe try to put lights in it...

I'm a craft beer nerd, and she likes anything with rum in it. We both have a penchant for donuts and ice cream, and we're both alumni of the roller derby world (she plays, I used to coach). Portland is kind of our perfect spot...

Thats basically why i refuse to buy ton of ships. So many people are willing to shell out the bucks for 3-5 expansions (even the bigger ones) just to get 1 ship with the "perfect" deck of cards attached. Theres a guy at my FLGS that has 6 A-Wings, 3 Falcons, 2 Ghosts, and a plethora of Scum ships he bought purely for the cards. The dude carries around a carrying case that rivals my 40k Tau box (which is about 4.5ft tall and holds 6000pts of models btw) and is packed with ships.

The only repeats i have in Xwing is TIE Fighters/TIEfos, TIE Intercepts (Axes box and 1 normal), and soon to be bomber/defender again because of a different box. I would love to get repeats of some others but i know better, FFG is bound to release more packs and i was **** right - i was about to buy a 2nd bomber, then the Vets showed up.

This game may be a lot better at the high-level tournament play than 40k is, but that doesnt mean its intended to be played that way. Fun > Ultimate Curbstomp list, and fun doesnt require a gakton of expansions of the same ship.
