Now that we have the most complete, complex and visually stunning Talisman edition in history that has now had a speed bump added when using all expansions successfully at once....is this the end of the road? What's next?
If you own the Cataclysm, this is the first real decision we have had to make when playing Talisman in regards to which main board you use. Sure, you can homebrew the idea of bringing the Cataclysm board in on various triggers, but overall I think with the amount of moving stuff around and clearing the board, really it is not worth it. The cataclysm, to me, seems to be an effort to better streamline the game with all the other expansions because the old board was lacking some punch when compared to this board. (Our group has opted to mostly stick to the Cataclysm board).
Of all the board games When Talisman 4th Edition Revised is set up in its entirety, it is absolutely amazing if you have a table big enough for this epic monstrosity. With good shuffling and adventurous players, no two games are alike. Some of the games are downright bloody and mean whereas others are similar to a stroll through Candyland; it all depends on the approach each player has and the cards they draw. Since the randomness is so abundant at this point in Talisman it definitely has some tactic on where to go and how to go about your approach but does not overwhelm the game where new players will not have a great time.
Aside from the obvious POD expansion to connect the Woodlands and Highlands that Jon New is keeping from us , what is on YOUR wish list for Talisman?
Here is my wishlist which I will keep to 5:
- Updated FAQ Talisman rules, on their own, are simplistic and do not require a lot of knowledge. But once you have multiple or all expansions together the rules become convoluted and a LOT of contradictions and minor problems arise. When these little quibs pop up multiple turns in a row, the games bog down and newer players become disinterested. Every group has that one guy that is going to argue those little loop-holes and conundrums that IS Talisman. My advice to everyone, let them have their way immediately after you have explained it and they still disagree to keep the game going. The entire group will thank you and new players will never know an iota of difference. The other option is to flip a coin(roll a d6) as the deciding factor. I have found the "rules lawyer" in this effect though will gripe the entire rest of the night if they lost the roll and ruin the game for everyone. So, save the discussion for after the game to resolve it for future games. For this reason I think this would be the most beneficial thing for the community. "Official FAQ's" tend to shut rules lawyers mouths..... Side note: I have even thought that a Rules update thread that was "stickied" in the forums could be the way to go since we debate and usually come to a mutual agreement in most threads. There are some however where we could list multiple options and let your group decide..... Who wants to start this beast of a thread with links to the threads debating the common issues? The idea would be to have one person keep editing the first post in the Topic as the discussion mutates into something no one would read through. Each time it is opened the topics and questions would all be right there to view. If it moves too far down the list someone could "bump" it to the top...
- Miskatonic type expansion to add cards, revise cards that do not work with current expansions (adding "trinket" to some cards, etc.), updating certain broken combos and adding a few "new" features. They could update some of the characters that are really weak compared to new ones. Also, they could give official version of the Alternate Endings on their page. This could be a GREAT expansion!
- Timescape. Yeah, I want it. I have the homebrew version but I want this in the worst way. Chainsaws, lasguns and power armour. All you haters can bugger off.
- Missing Characters. I just think it would be great to have official versions even if we had to make them ourselves from the download section at FFG because Miniatures are easy enough to Proxy.
- Smaller Talisman boards in a Special edition copy ensconcing all of the expansions to date. This would streamline all the rules and make the boards small enough to fit on most tables and make the entire thing all nice and tidy to transport. Most-likely this would be well outside of my affordability but I can dream....
So what is on your wishlist? It seems more than likely FFG does not dictate their business based on a few fanboy recommendations but sometimes whispers come into fruition if there are enough of them.......
